Sony Won't Allow In-Development Ark: Survival Evolved on PS4, Dev Says

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible."

Sony will not allow an in-development version of dinosaur survival game Ark: Survival Evolved on PlayStation 4, according to developer Studio Wildcard. In a forum post today, the developer said fans who want to play as soon as possible should reach out to Sony.

"As for the PS4 Release of Ark: Survival Evolved, it is currently up to Sony," Studio Wildcard explained. "We've been informed that we can't release the game on this platform until it has been finished.

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible, as we already have an awesome PS4 version of the game running internally. If you would like to see it sooner, please let Sony know, as it's unfortunately not our decision."

Survival Evolved is available on PC through Steam Early Access and on Xbox One through Game Preview. The PS4 does not have a program along the lines of Early Access, which may explain why Sony reportedly won't allow the in-progress version of Survival Evolved on the PS4.

GameSpot has reached out to Sony in an attempt to get its side of the story.

In other news about Survival Evolved, Studio Wildcard recently announced that it was removing the free-to-play Survival of the Fittest version on PC. As for PS4 and Xbox One versions, these are on hold indefinitely.

Survival Evolved launched in June 2015 for PC and came to Xbox One later. Despite not even being finished yet, the game has sold 5.5 million copies across both platforms.

Conflicted on this. I'm not a fan of "early access" development games. But I know others who are and it should be their choice if they want to partake.

As far as Paragon, It's my understanding that this early acess is similar to when you get early acesss to NBA for pre-ordering. It's more of a headstart than having any actual impact on development.

It was given to users free as part of their PS+ membership in July and the open beta begins August 16th 2016.

Ark has been in development over a year and their projected full release was June 2016. It is now August 2016 and their store page is not updated. Maybe a little more polish and more of a concrete timeframe and Sony would have green lit the project.

@RicanV: Yea I think it should be an option no ones forces you to buy an early access game. I feel like it keeps getting pushed back because they keep adding more stuff and probably anytime they get close to release time they come up with something they want to add before official release therefore pushing back even more. I mean survival of the fittest is going back to being part of it so I expect a delay and I think they are adding a be the dinosaur mode also so expect it to be even more delayed.

How nice that Sony's reluctance to turn THEIR platform into a new Steam client, doesn't light a fire under these people to FINISH their game. I guess they just haven't had all that much time, what with trying to throw out tournaments and e-sports competitions for an UNFINISHED GAME. Good on ya Wildgame....oops. I mean WildCARD Studios.

@Khasym: Yea rush to get it on a platform when you already sold 5.5 million copies on two platforms when it is still in development. Sure they probably want ps4 users to buy it and atleast have choice to play it early but I'm guessing they already made some sort of profit so they are in no rush.

But Sony was absolutely ecstatic about having Street Fighter V exclusively on their console (discounting the PC) right?

I suppose they could just publish through Telltale games. That worked for 7 Days to Die, which is clearly still an alpha.

So with that my $30.00 was well spent!

@freeformrulz: what do you consider a high end PC? because this IS a pretty graphically intense game on top of it needing some optimization. but it runs AMAZINGLY well on epic with a 980ti. and Pretty darn good on low to mid with an oculus rift. dont be surprised your 6 year old "gaming" laptop cant play it well, i know ppl running it decently on a macbook pro, so if an overpriced calculator w/ apps runs it better then the "high end pc" you saw it on....

@freeformrulz: i believe in your personal experience, however I've got a $1000 home brew system and I run ark on almost max settings, full HD resolution, 55-65 fps. Are you running an AMD gfx solution? Cause Nvidia cards run about 100 times better because Ark is written on their graphic driver code, a issue which was brought up about a year ago in how Nvidia was corrupting the market with ethically twisted software enfranchisement practices. Not saying you're wrong, before my pc upgrade I could barely run the damn thing too. But on a high end pc the thing fly's in my opinion

@freeformrulz: wait, what's that? A game that is technically still in alpha and not fully optimizated doesn't run well? Well golly jeepers gee whiz, what a shock. That's like being surprised about the heat in southern Nevada during August. Or that lawyers lie.

@noctisumbra: Being in Alpha does not protect you from criticism. If you have a product that you expect people to pay money for, then there should be some standard being adhered to. Granted Ark's on the higher end of the totem pole so I can at least see why people vouch for it... also granted is how hilariously awful the other end of the totem pole of unfinished survival games is so I'm not really sure that I'm saying all that much by giving Ark that kind of credit.

The reality is that most of your overall audience for your product is going to be playing the unfinished version, so you can at least have enough self-respect to deliver a product that's actually playable. DayZ for instance just started performing acceptably but most of its audience is gone and it will never ever have the audience that it used to have. Most of those people played unoptimized garbage unfortunately... and that's the legacy you leave.

I don't even understand the issue with getting the engine running tight as a priority. That's like building the top 40 floors of a 45-floor building first and then worrying about having a sturdy foundation after you've built it. It sounds really backwards to me.

@jinzo9988: early access is double edged that way. A good start increases your chances of getting funding, but a bad one dooms you. I agree on some standards should be established, possibly some legal policies too. On steam I got an early access called Star forge, made big lofty promises that it never got close to, stupidly they eventually 'released' the game essentially incomplete. They never met their goals, no where close, but it still left early access and was deemed a finished product, it just didn't have any of the features they promised. In reality we got ripped, scammed, but as it stands that's the risk of buying into early access. One could argue that getting early access is like buying a car, looking back now it's obvious Star forge wasnt going to fill out, just as it's clear Ark probably will. There are just signs and things to look for that are marks of quality. However is it really fair and acceptable to expect every gamer to have a well trained eye in the production quality of a game, to be able to identify the markers of both skill and focus a dev team needs to make something happen? I certainly don't think so and feel some black and white legal policies to guarantee at least a few things should be instated. No one should be allowed to make promises and hype over features that never come to be.

@wretch1d: Yea but I can say that exact thing about 5-10 games every year that are put on the store as finished products. Why doesn't sony make them not put those up. See this logic doesn't work and if it is put as early access you should know it isn't finish and will be buggy and not be sold to you as an actual finished product.

@magemaximus: this decision had nothing to do with being concerned with the gamers. Sony isn't your buddy, they don't worry about you unless you aren't spending with them. Most likely they didn't want a game that's in such constant flux, licensing used to be about discs, games that were multi disc had to pay a licensing fee per the disc. I'm not sure but possibly that's becoming a per gigabyte deal now. I do know that Sony and ms both charge companies to issue patches/updates, games in early access though update a lot compared to other titles and thus I'm sure early access requires a special arrangement to make the update process cost effective. Most likely is Sony wasn't willing to make a deal, they just want full price which would be ultra costly to the ark group, after a $600 ps3 it's clear Sony is willing commit to pricing structures that make their platform inaccessible to those unwilling or unable to just hurl money at them even to their own detriment.

Finally someone standing up to this "Early Access" crap! Pissed me off when Steam started doing it, it's one of the MANY reasons that I continue to boycott XBone, so, to see Sony standing against it is really refreshing.

If you want to see the game on PS4, how about we get in touch with the developer, and make sure they are actually working towards finishing the game, as MANY "Early Access" developers never do.

That makes no sense. I've been playing dungeon defenders 2 early access on the ps4. It barely resembles the game I initially bought after all of the updates it's received and they STILL aren't finished. So yeah, weird.

@moloko: You missunderstand me, i'm comparing this to the closest hardware equivalent available in the market which according to the digital foundry tests doesn't seem that much playable, judging from that and considering the PS4 isn't that much more powerful this doesn't seem like a good release at this point.

Street Fighter V doesn't have that issue and it would never be released with that issue or capcom would commit PR suicide by destroying SFV's immediate availability in tournaments.

@rapt0rx: Incorrect the problems it had and it never affected local play at least on PC and from the crossplay friends i fought against it barely affected ps4 at all.

Nevertheless Early Access has no place on consoles and this game and Ubi Soft proves it, mostly ubi soft.

Probably the first wise decision Sony made in a while althrough they allowed Lichdom which was also a terrible mess.

All sarcasm aside, it didn't stop Street Fighter 5, or Destiny, or Rock Band 4. Just 'say' it's a finished product and offer the actual full version's features later as "free updates" and no one will be all the wiser.

I'm not really a fan of playing unfinished games or Early Access. But honestly I'm seeing a delay for Ark coming soon. I don't see why a developer would complain to the public about a corporate policy for early access if your said game releases in 3 1/2 months anyway. If they where so set on getting the game out to everyone like they say why wait until a few months before release?
