Sony Won't Allow In-Development Ark: Survival Evolved on PS4, Dev Says

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible."

Sony will not allow an in-development version of dinosaur survival game Ark: Survival Evolved on PlayStation 4, according to developer Studio Wildcard. In a forum post today, the developer said fans who want to play as soon as possible should reach out to Sony.

"As for the PS4 Release of Ark: Survival Evolved, it is currently up to Sony," Studio Wildcard explained. "We've been informed that we can't release the game on this platform until it has been finished.

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible, as we already have an awesome PS4 version of the game running internally. If you would like to see it sooner, please let Sony know, as it's unfortunately not our decision."

Survival Evolved is available on PC through Steam Early Access and on Xbox One through Game Preview. The PS4 does not have a program along the lines of Early Access, which may explain why Sony reportedly won't allow the in-progress version of Survival Evolved on the PS4.

GameSpot has reached out to Sony in an attempt to get its side of the story.

In other news about Survival Evolved, Studio Wildcard recently announced that it was removing the free-to-play Survival of the Fittest version on PC. As for PS4 and Xbox One versions, these are on hold indefinitely.

Survival Evolved launched in June 2015 for PC and came to Xbox One later. Despite not even being finished yet, the game has sold 5.5 million copies across both platforms.

I though we didn't want "unfinished buggy games" to be released. I no longer get this.

@Warlord_Irochi: We don't want anymore unfinished buggy games released under the guise of finished products. This dev is open about it and Sony should allow their consumers to decide whether they want to support an indie dev, not Sony.

@aretilda: I agree with not letting this unfinished, forever in development games on PS Store. But you are totally right, what about 7 days to die :/ That game is not finished even if they say it is. Hitman is a little bit diferent because it is meant to be an episodic game.

With this logic, shouldn't episodic games such as TellTale or the most recent Hitman not be allowed?

@nebulaone: no, they're episodic. You don't ask for your money back because a TV show has 9 episodes left...

I'd rather just wait for the game to be finished. That's the reason I haven't touched it despite wanting to play it a lot the notion of buying an unfinished product doesn't sit well with me. I don't know why they don't just finish the damn game, but maybe they lack funding or are bad devs.

And people bitch and moan about Microsoft being hard to deal with because of their Indy program. Meanwhile they have EA Access which Sony refuses to allow and they had an in-development version of Ark which I bought for my kid and he plays every day for hours. But it's Sony so it okily dokily.

@bdrtfm Actually Microsoft has been great about indies. Just as many if not more are popping up on XBox One. They actually listened to what people wanted. Phil Spencer turned that system way around.:

@bdrtfm: I think you too commonly play the Xbox Vs PlayStation card. When it wasn't called for.

The reason this was rejected is because it didn't reach the standards needed to be approved. I think that's more than fair considering every other game goes through the same process.

For this game to be rejected means it's worse off than launch Assassins Creed Unity, or PS3 Skyrim.

It's also worth pointing out the PS4 version they provided probably isn't working as well as the versions on other platforms.

But no "Boo Sony" T_T

@RSM-HQ: How do you know the PS4 version they provided is probably not working as well as the other versions? That's pure speculation. I could just as easily say they are doing this so as not to have two survival type sims like Ark and No Man's Sky out at the same time. That's about as factual as what you are assuming. And as far as me playing the Xbox vs. PlayStation card goes, that's probably because it's a well known fact that MS gets trashed for every little thing they do while Sony gets a free pass for pretty much everything. It starts to get old after awhile. I mean MS was getting attacked for the Xbox Ones power consumption for God's sake. It's pretty much accepted that MS can do no right and Sony can do no wrong. Xbox One backwards compatibility vs. Sony re-releasing PS2 games for way too high a price and streaming games for a fee is a great example. If it were reversed, people would be incensed. But it's Sony so people applaud the "features" while calling Xbox Ones b/c useless.

@bdrtfm: Xbox's faux BC is useless. You can't just stick any old game into it. It has to be supported and you have to be online, so it's not true BC.

And comparing EvilA Access to indie development is ridiculous. A shitty major corporation that specializes in ruining games wants extra money and Sony said no. Blocking EA's revenue is always a win and you know it.

@Barighm: You can stick any old (Xbox360) game that's on BC listing . Also you only need to be online just to get the BC download. After that you can disconnect and play completely offline.

@Barighm: See what I mean?

Sony - pay for PS2 games you already own and pay to stream PS games you already own. Yeah f'in A, bring it on!!!!! EA sucks and I don't want their shit service on my PlayStation and I approve of Sony making the choice for me. Thanks so much!!!

Microsoft - pop in a game disc you already own and download it and play it for free. F that, it's not "TRUE" backwards compatibility cuz I can't play the entire catalogue out of the gate. Nobody wants that useless crap. Keep that EA access crap on Xbox too cuz it sucks. Every game EA ever made sucks but only when you play it through EA access. Playing the disc on PS4 is cool though.

Hilarious.

@monkeypukefight: My kid is almost 18. Ever try telling a kid that age how to spend their free time? He has a summer job and goes to school full time. That's a lot more than some kids do. What he does in his spare time is up to him.

@bdrtfm: hmm, agree with you on the ''teens being asshats most of the time''. but, as my old man taught me, there's nothing a good asskicking doesn't solve. btw, i also agree that what a kid does in his spare time is up to said kid... to a certain degree.

ps. i apologise for my crude initial comment. i have no bussines telling you how to raise your kid. i swore off commenting on gaspot articles years ago, it never leads to anything good.

@Twobros: Console version of 7 days is technically not in-development. Telltale marketed it and sold it as a complete game. Telltale is under no obligation to release any future updates TFP releases on the early access pc version.

Patiently waiting for optimization updates. The game looks like utter shit on the Xbox One and PC frame rates are atrocious even on high end hardware.

Other than that, the game is fun and in my mind the best survival sim since Day Z debuted.

Title makes it sound like the game won't be released on PS4, but it's just Sony saying the game needs to be complete before it's released. I'm okay with that.

@jedicommand7: Not really, the title says: "Sony won't allow in-development..." meaning: It won't allow a game that's not complete...but once it is complete...it will consider it.

@ProtossRushX: You are an idiot if you believe that. It was never free, it had a free 1 hour TRIAL that after that if you wanted to continue you had to pay for the game - $35 in early access/game preview. And the price will likely go up when it is released as complete - most early access games do and it is one of the perks of being an early supporter.

@ProtossRushX: It has always been $30, there have been free-to-play weekends, and most recently: a 50% off sale where you got it for $14.99. There has been the survival of the fittest game that's been free-to-play...

@jerjef: I have an idea just take the in development tag of it like all these other game companies do, why Sony want to act like these moves are for the good of the player? Put the game out there and people will buy it or they won't like making it available his harming your platform in anyway,

@jerjef: Capcom is AAA developer who has been making games since the NES days sony can trust them. Plus sony help fund that game with cash. Sony has no relationship with the Survival ARK dev they never do business with them before and didn't help fund that that's why they are so shaky on this product.

@ProtossRushX: So the fact that they released the game in development on Steam and Xbox One without any issues or attempts to rip people off is not enough to stop Sony from worrying they can't be trusted? Quit making excuses for their BS. If this was Microsoft saying no, people would be showing up at Redmond with assault rifles. The product is a huge success on 2 platforms. What's to be shaky about?
