Wii outselling PS3 in Japan 5-to-1

The latest figures from the Land of the Rising Sun show Nintendo steaming ahead of Sony in console units shifted.

April's figures showed the Wii was outselling the PlayStation 3 4-to-1 in Japan, and last month the gap widened even further, with the cheaper Nintendo console now 5-to-1 ahead, reports Bloomberg.

Bloomberg, quoting figures from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain Inc, revealed that 251,794 Wiis had been sold in Japan in May, five times as many units as the PS3. Microsoft's Xbox 360 lagged even further behind, with 11,082 units changing hands last month. Exact figures were not given for PS3 sales, but they are likely to be in the region of 50,000.

The story was much the same in the battle of the handhelds, with the Nintendo DS having sold 620,670 to the PlayStation Portable's 123,673 during May.

I worked for gamestop, I had the unfortunate duty of having to play the PS3. Several times. For about 2 hours a shot. Played argueably the 2 best games on the system at this time, Resistance and Motorstorm. You have no counter to what I say Hovan, except to try and shortchange my arguement with your ignorance.

Jestarius : I think you know you lost this argument, so trying to come back with a reponse like the one below is beyond pathetic...kinda like you're little Wii. I'm pretty sure you haven't even tried a PS3. and I'm not talking about playing a demo at your local store for 5 minutes. Please, sit this one out.

hovan, 1080p is a slight upgrade, as 1080i was already in last generations consoles (see: xbox). Upgradeable internal hard drive was in the PS2. PS2 had 2 usb ports, you got 2 more, I hope you feel taken care of. Playstation store is a knee jerk reaction to live, done badly. The machine is quiet, as long as you don't get unlucky with one that starts sounding like a vacuum (known 3 people to have that). Upconverting DVD player....as long as you got the recent update, you couldn't exactly say that a few months ago. 7 gamepads at once, for those people that like odd numbers, vs 8 at once for the previous generation. Installing linux is effectively a waste of time to anybody wanting to just play games. PS home, also known as the reactionary amalgamation of Miis and Live. Sorry, In my assessment of the PS3 being a PS2 with upgrades, I left out that they added other company's ideas as well. Sorry I forgot the mimicry part.

hovan316 Jestarius: how about, take The PS2, boost the hardware (CPU, RAM, Graphics card), add an internal upgradable Hard Drive (60G), a Blu-ray player, HDMI port, True HD surround (7.1), Media card reader, a nice OS, 4 USB ports (keyboard and mouse and USB keys suppported), Bluetooth device capabilty (headset, mouse, keyboard), Playstation store, Free online, quiet machine, slick piano finish, 1080p capable graphics, upconverting DVD player, upconverting PS and PS2 game capability, backward compatibility with PS and PS2 games, Bluetooth gamepad (30 hours with one charge), 7 gamepads at once, Internet browser, firmware updates via internet, connection to your PC to share music, photos and videos, chat with friends with any bluetooth headset, linux can be installed as an OS, WiFi, and a sick library of games to hit the market really soon, plus PS HOME and YOU GET THE PS3 my dear friend! So please, you're WAY out of your league with your little Wii ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It's funny. hovan316 The funny thing is 1 year from now, Wii's will be collecting dust...and you Wii owners will be asking yourselves - "Well, why can't I get THAT game on my console?" And the answer to that question will be - "Well my son, our console isn't powerfull enough for that game and we can't use those controls for that game!" It's sad, that the price point is the major selling factor for 2 gamecubes taped togheter with new controls which get boring and tiring after a while. And you guys all know it !!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's already happening. Casuals could car less about hardcore games---the rest of us already have a 360. All nintendo has to do is keep the same type games coming out. There is nothing wrong with their line up.

Funny is how Wii haters are repeating themselves on the "a few years from now the diference would be huge and the Wii would collect dust blah blah blah" Thing is Gear of Wars graphics quality, Half-Life 2 physics and F.E.A.R awesome A.I is what they mean with that. But those games are here now. They have been here for a while. Their excelence is way ahead of what the PS3, 360 have shown (obiously besides those same games lol). It will take a while to beat them in their excellences. They show what will be the so called next-gen future. Scratch that last, they show what the so called next-gen is. And they are excellent. But you know what? They are here now, yet... they havent stop the Wii.

hovan316...you have brought up one of the most inane comments ever made about the Wii, the '2 gamecube taped' comment. Looking at all the newer consoles, I'd say that the only one that isn't really just it's predecessor multiplied by some factor IS the Wii. The PS3? Lets see...take the PS2, give it more power, a bigger case, add some shininess, change the controllers to wireless...BAM PS3. It added sixaxis as an afterthought, and most games that it even works for show it. The 360? same formula, take out the sixaxis stuff, switch bigger case with bigger fans. The other two show very little or no innovation, they just upped the power of the previous iteration, effectively bolting multiple systems together to make a bigger beast. Nintendo actually changed their entire way of doing things with the Wii, adding a multitude of new features from the interface to the method of control.

for all the 'tickle me elmo' comments: tickle me elmo has one thing you can do with it. That comparison is only valid if the only game you had for Wii is Wii sports. Then you might make sense, as it would be a one-trick pony. As it's catalogue of games is larger than that, as well as the fact that it is growing, your comparison is highly inaccurate, despite it's catchy phrasing. To those that are doing the car comparison comments: You are missing one vital thing in your car comparison; quality of manufacture. How many Wiis are having hardware problems? Overheating, anything like that? Yes, the Wii uses monitarily cheaper parts, but that is because of how long the parts have been around, not because of the quality therein. Your comparison is once again invalid on that basis; you are equivocating quality to price, when that is not the issue. At our local Gamestop, I know for a fact that they have had about 20% of their PS3s sold come back with hardware error.

limitless_rage Plus, most people don't even own a HD TV. The real question should be, in two years who is selling more? When everyone has a HD TV, will they want Wii or PS3? I have a feeling most people are gonna want a HD experience with their nice new HD TV's. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 things have to happen for this to be true. 1. the PS3 has to drop the price far enough under the 360 so that the Madden and Wrastlin' gamers will be able to justifying playing said games on a cheaper system and 2. the Wii has to completely stop housing games geared at casual gamers. Don't see either of those scenarios panning out so your future may be flawed.

Well for my two cents, I would have to say that this whole thing is stupid. Of course the Wii is outselling the PS3. Not only is it a hot item (like a tickle me elmo), but they are cheap and it comes with a game (5 really). We haven't seen pack in games on a regular basis since good ol' SEGA vs NINTENDO days. Not only that but the Wii is fun to play (even though most of the games suck, it is still fun to play). Problem is most third party titles are crappy ports that arent suited for it. Therefore, if things continue this way, only Nintendo games will be good, just like on Gamecube. And we all know how that ended. Fact is, Nintendo is in the right spot at the right time .... hope they don't drop the ball. Sony on the other hand is still outselling XB360 ... have been for over a year now. PS2 rules over 360. Nobody mentions that. Just like the fact that Microsoft has dropped support for the regular Xbox. Why would you want to support a company that strait up tells you "If you don't upgrade, I don't care about you!". Plus, most people don't even own a HD TV. The real question should be, in two years who is selling more? When everyone has a HD TV, will they want Wii or PS3? I have a feeling most people are gonna want a HD experience with their nice new HD TV's.

EmperorSupreme: Maybe its cool these days in the news room to bash PS3, but it might be more sensational if they posted Wii outsells X360 25 to 1. Seriously I don't think these biased headlines do anything for their credibility. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Everybody that doesn't live under a rock knows that Xbox 360 was a complete failure in Japan and it isn't going to pick up anytime soon. The reason the headline is "Wii 5-to-1 PS3" is because Sony and Nintendo are both Japanese companies and Japanese name brands. Playstation 1 and 2 knocked the socks off of N64 and Gamecube, respectively. Once again, I repeat myself, Xbox 360's failure was already a given, considering how poorly Xbox 1 did in Japan. This story is focused on pointing out that Sony, who has been ahead in Japan for the last two generations, is getting the snot kicked out of them by Nintendo, who led in Japan for two generations before that. Xbox 360 has almost nothing to do with the story since they were always bound to come in a distant third compared to these native Japanese video game juggernauts.

ASK YOURSELVES SONY FANBOYS...how long can Sony keep the BLOOD SOAKED TOURNIQUET on before they realize it has to be changed? Most of you SONY FANS ARE WAITING FOR A PRICE DROP OR RIDING THE FENCE. You all are contributing to Sony's woes right now because you won't buy the PS3. On the other hand the Nintendo faithful blindly follow Nintendo into new territory based on their past experiences with said company. That's why the Wii is doing so well. Their true core is bigger than Sony's. Where do you Sony fanboys' loyalties lay? Spiderman gave Sony a boost at the cost of selling out on the story. Nobody is going to see that bomb twice. HDDVD players are going for 249.99 with 5 movies. Sony had to drop the price of the stand alone BR player to 499.99 just to stay competitive. SO MUCH FOR THE TROJAN HORSE. A couple of games won't make a difference. The very name "WII IS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE WORD "FUN" amongst casual gamers. "Hardcore" gamers who are used to playing and waiting on Nintendo style games just go out and buy a 360 for their hardcore gaming fix. In rationale, they have the money to buy a PS3 but why would they knowing you could get 2 systems for the price of one and still play all the games you love sans 1 or 2 of them. If you Sony fans don't think it could get any uglier wait until the PS3 price drop. Nintendo and MS will follow suit. From then on out it will be a blood bath. AT THAT POINT THAT BLOOD SOAKED TOURNIQUET THAT SONY IS NURSING WON'T EVEN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Congrats to Nintendo for leading the sales chart in Japan (again). Seriously, is this really surprising to anybody anymore? Nintendo has finally come up with a successful way to sell a system that is fun and unique enough to make themselves look different than any other system that is currently out there. Their last few systems had been soo pathetic wannabes that actually delivered less than what the competitors were giving that it makes you wonder what they were thinking. But anyways, what is also suprising is all of the people that STILL doesn't give credit where credit is due. Everybody will say anything to justify what is happening in the real world to keep their happy little dream world alive. Here is a reality check: 1) The Xbox 360 is a system that carries a lot of games the Japanese people do not like and do not care for. Everybody has different tastes in their games and the Japanese just do not care about the Halo's, Gears of Wars, or Western RPG's. Which leads me to the second one... 2) Seems like more and more Japanese people are interested in short, quick, pick-me-up games than the traditional games. I am not talking about all Japanese people of course, but according to Mr. Miyamoto himself, not a lot of people bought the latest Zelda as he thought they would in Japan because the Japanese have different tastes now. 3) The PS3, no matter how successful the first two playstations were, is just tooo expensive for the mainstream crowd to get into. Notice I say mainstream, not the "hardcore" fans of this website. It is still a video game system, no matter what Sony says it can do as well, and according to the sales, people seem to not care about the other features....they just want something to play fun games. Which leads to the next one... 4) If the Cell is really that complicated in making games for by third-party developers, I wouldn't be surprised. But what we do know so far is that a) it is really really really expensive to develop a game for the PS3 and b) its again too expensive for the majority of gamers to be willing to pay for. This may explain why so few games are coming for the PS3 right now. Will this change in the future? May be. Will the price of the PS3 change anytime soon? Doubt it. If you guys still want to hold your delusions of grandeur for your favorite systems, go right ahead....I just don't see why you need to. It's not like you work for them, or that its your family business (props to those people who really do work for them or have a family member who does). The fanboys can really be annoying. Especially the ones who still believe the Wii is just a fad and it will die, that the games are for lil kids and that the PS3 and 360 are the elite systems. They sound like the Nintendo fanboys of the N64 days who said the Playstation is just a fad and for losers and that Nintendo will destroy them. Sure there are dangers of Nintendo failing, but they are just likely as the 360 failing or the PS3. The people that believe that the Wii games are not "mature" enough for them are not mature themselves. Games are just good games or bad games and you either like them or hate them, thats it. If you need a video game to justify how mature you are, then you must lead a pretty immature life. I'm not saying that those who claim to play mature games are immature; they said it themselves. I talked long enough.....all three systems are doing great and have great games coming already and even more later on....it all depends on what you prefer to play and how much you want to pay for it.

I believe all the "next-gen" systems smell. Wii doesn't count as next-gen therefore it's cheaper and has a brand name to give it some weight. I may be stupid, but this is a no brainer! . . .

Price is irrelevant when you compare two things meant to do the same thing. It's all about peoples priorities. If I have the money to buy a Porsche then I have the money to buy a Toyota and put a nice little down payment on some property. If I have five kids it probably wouldn't be economical to buy a Porsche either. If I want to save on gas, chances are I will get a Toyota Sudan before settling on a Porsche. Further, ALL cars get compared to each other when it comes to safety, mileage, space, etc. So the "why compare the Wii to the PS3 when they are not the same price" argument is irrelevant. You Sony FANBOYS are comparing cars to videogames systems--- A TOY. The PS3 will always draw comparisons to the Wii because IT IS AN EXPENSIVE PIECE OF MULTIMEDIA HARDWARE MASQUERADING AS A TOY. Sony duped their own fans and now they are reaping their just rewards.

I think forcing Blu Ray on the consumer was a mistake. Absolutely. Both BD and HD-DVD were rushed to the market to elevate HD adoption rates, particularly in wake of dwindling DVD sales. So it's the BDA VS the HD-DVD group. Lately, both camps have been aggressively marketing the players (going as far as bundling with several movies). It's a great leap for those HDTV owners for sure, but SD set owners outnumber them by a good margin.

tranzam383 "They are not losing Exclusives to the Wii but the XBox360" actualy losing exclusives or just romored to be losing exclusives? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They have already lost exclusives; Assasin's Creed, Devil May Cry etc. There are rumours, mainly started by 360 fanboys, that the PS3 is losing MGS4 and FFXIII. At the moment this is pure fiction but as the PS3 continues to sell poorly you begin to wonder...

"Split Fatality No defence for any system here, but I want to clarify something. Are the PS3's being sold as soon as they are off the assembly line? Is it possible to get a PS3 whenever you decide to buy one?" PS3s have been far from hard to find. Working at gamestop for a bit, over this last holiday, we had one sit through the entire of black friday without being sold. On top of that, one of Sony's execs challenged people to find one in January and said he'd pay $800 for every PS3 found on a shelf...Penny Arcade took about 1hr and found 13. The PS3 has been sitting on shelves for a very long time.

"Sony are losing ground to the Wii and losing it's exclusives as well." there are to many games that simply could not be done on the Wii for this to happen. they will both co exist.

UmonDaisuke DVD players were expensive. PS2's were cheaper. Same thing now. Far from it. There were cheaper DVD players in the US in 2000, but it's the format's momentum that made the PS2 a good bargain. Keep in mind that DVD was introduced in 1996, so it was out for 4 years and the PS2 simply continued the momentum. Right now, HD isn't mainstream and BD is only a year old on the market. Launching the PS3 with BD was more or less like launching the N64 with a DVD drive in 96. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think forcing Blu Ray on the consumer was a mistake. However I understand why they did it, they wanted to increase the popularity of their format through an industry which for the past 10+ years it had dominated. The problem is, even with the option of Blu Ray most PS3 owners without a HDTV will probably stick with standard DVDs. But who knows. In the future as HD becomes more mainstream and Blu Ray becomes cheaper to produce it may be seen as a good strategy from Sony in terms of increasing the popularity of its format early on in the HD movie format war.

When the N64 was around Nintendo lost some of it's exclusives to Sony, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid. Resident Evil 4 was gonna be a Gamecube exclusive but it was also brought out to the PS2. Sony are losing ground to the Wii and losing it's exclusives as well.
