I just discovered something quite amazing and suprising. Not too long ago I was doing my thrift shopping and I came across a NES cartridge that was nowhere near the electronics section and if it wasn't for my son saying 'Link daddy, Link' I wouldn't have spotted it. It was a single copy of The Legend of Zelda, except that instead of being the regular gold colour, it was a bright banana yellow. I thought nothing of it at the time though I did recongnize that it was different in colour than my home copy. It was $2 dollars which is a good price anyways.
So the point is,(ROFL) I googled 'yellow zelda cartridge' and discovered that is is a type of promo copy and is quite rare. My jaw dropped to the floor and I couldn't believe my luck. The yellow NES cartridges where used by the NES testing station. Different cartridges were included as testing devices, including titles like Duck Hunt, Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda (among others). Other testing cartridges were released that would test the functionality of the Nintendo Console, like controllers, power source, etc...
The value of this cartridge varies anywhere from $175 - $600+ dollars. I am obviously pleased with this find and wanted to share it with you all for two reasons. One, that you could have the knowledge that these testing cartridges are out there and will know they have value, and secondly because I'm so stoked and just had to tell someone who would care at all!
I might do a little blurb on this NES testing system in the future if there is any interest in such a topic. Cheers.
