This thread is something of a work in progress, but I thought I'd get started on it now since the release is getting really close. The big news for today is that, while there were nasty rumors of a delay, it turned out to only be for Russia. Gamestop is doing a weekly feature on the game called Turismo Tuesdays. They released two videos today:

Gran Turismo 5 Course Maker Demo, Gameplay Video

GT5 Video: McLaren F1 Gets Dirty at Laguna Seca, Toscana

I'm looking forward to seeing what else they release. That stealth McLaren looks really cool:

All I can say is that I really hope it was worth the wait... because I'll be getting a PS3 in the near future, and unless GT5 completely destroys FM3 in all aspects, I won't see the need to get it (considering I am getting kind of bored with FM3).

I have several "hopes:"

  1. "Full" damage on premium cars involves both cosmetic and performance degradation, like FM.
  2. The simulation of the clutch is allowed with the gamepad and isn't just an "on/off" button.
  3. Down the line, I hope the "standard" models all get interior views, because I can't play FM2 now that I have FM3 and all its interior views.
  4. All cars are unlocked from the beginning (like FM3) and only require greater amounts of credits to buy (playing 24hr of Nurburgring to get the F1 car in GT4 was stupid), but not exorbitant amounts of credits (like the 250 GTO in FM3, 20 million... -_-).
  5. The performance degradation (if it exists) will also effect standard cars, and will allow for mixed races between P and S cars.
  6. The career mode has a more focused approach to getting players to play, unlike the past four iterations of GT games.
  7. WRC involves more than just "circular" tracks, and actual stages from real WRC courses (like Quebec).
  8. Paint can be applied after purchase, and there is some sort of semblance of a livery editor.
  9. Body upgrades (like those in GT2, but more complex) can be applied to change the look of the car, giving greater customization options.
  10. The track editor (or "maker" as Kaz calls it) goes beyond simple bending of road, and allows for crazy concoctions (like very steep hills and corners).
  11. The races themselves involve more than just driving for first place (i.e. completing an objective that isn't about the best time, such as driving in between certain speeds, or not going on a certain part of the track)

If at least a handful of those hopes are met, then I will consider buying the game... because FM3 is becoming a little dated for me, and I need a new fix when it comes to racing... and the ability to do more than just drive cars around a track and change their paint jobs (the track editor has me most intrigued, I've been hoping for one in a GT/FM game forever).

I also hope that Sony (or at least someone) comes out with a really good and affordable racing wheel, complete with paddles, auto- and manual-shifter and clutch pedal that is ideal for the game.

--

EDIT: Watching some of those videos has me wondering if they actually went out and recorded new engine sounds... because they sound exactly like those in GT3/4. :|

@ Foxhound- I don't know about everything, but I do know that the damage is more than cosmetic with the premium cars, and that the rally racing features point to point races. As for the engine sounds, I know they have been showing a lot of oddball builds of the game, but it sounds like they've improved the sounds in the final version. Here is a list of new info that came out of TGS:

  • Laguna Seca has been completely rebuilt and will return for GT5.Trial Mountain has also been confirmed.
  • "Gran Turismo Anywhere" will allow you to manage B-Spec races, right from your computer. You'll be able to hold B-Spec races with your friends from anywhere in what are called "Remote Races".
  • GT5 will feature a series of special events such as the Karting Experience, the AMG driving school, The Stig Challenge, Jeff Gordon NASCAR School, Sebastien Loeb Rally Challenge, and Gran Turismo Rally.
  • Point-to-point rally stages will be automatically and randomly generated – you'll have to depend on your co-driver to give you the best instructions about the road ahead.
  • Rally mode can be played either on or offline.
  • Weather changes include temperature differences, air pressure changes, and humidity, affecting the surface conditions of the track dynamically.
  • Weather conditions are randomized. Forecasts for your race will be available but may not be entirely accurate, just like the real world.
  • Polyphony Digital has helped Red Bull Racing's Adrian Newey design the X1 Concept – an "ultimate" racing car, free of any technical regulations.
  • Polyphony Digital has worked to improve engine sounds.
  • Yamauchi admits that, in certain situations – such as standing race starts in the rain with 15 other cars on the screen kicking up spray in front of you – the game may not be able to hold 60FPS. Otherwise, it will strive to hold 60FPS as often as possible.
  • The Volkswagen Kubelwagen, which has a drive system like the first beetle, and the amphibious Volkswagen Schwimmwagen will be in the game.
  • Many things didn't make the cut in Gran Turismo 5, and work onGran Turismo 6 has already begun.

I need the profit first then I can do step 1 and 2. :P

Fair enough. I'm so glad that my 'dead' 60GB still plays PS2 games. I don't think I could justify paying the money to fix it.

Yeah the game is shaping out nicely. And if they won't delay it again, it may be the best racer in the last few years. However, I have to say that the tracks look nothing special. It's the typical GT tracks we're used to. Why does the PC version of Porsche Unleashed from 2000 have better looking tracks than GT5? I know modeling cars takes up a lot of time, but they could make the tracks more lively. The PS3 is not the poor PS2 after all.

lol what a disaster. Sony moved out Socom 4, LBP2, motorstorm 3, and perhaps Resistance 3 to market GT5 as their big release of the holiday season and now they are left with practically no exclusives this holiday season. Great job.

yeah i read that bit and immediately decided to write it of as high cIass BS.

tbh, i was kinda expecitng it since we didn't hear any announcement of it going Gold. for a game that' was supposed to come out in two weeks, it shouldve gone gold by now. cant believe more people didnt pick up on that.

I'm not really bothered by this that much. Perhaps I have been desensitized, but I'm a patient person and I'm confident the game will be worth the wait. In any case, this will give me a bit more time to work on getting all the achievements for Forza 3.

I think GT keeps getting pushed back due to feature creep (and mostly features no one cares about). Would anyone really have complained if GT5 didn't have go karts or support 3D?

I'm fairly sure I jinxed the whole thing when I made this thread. I'm kinda pissed that Jeff Rubenstein from the Playstation Blog outright lied when he said that the US version was still on track and that the delay was just for Russia.

Thanks for the response rrag. And a shame its being delayed. The least they could do is just release the game and update it down the road. Unless of course it isn't actually finished... :?

I get why people are saying this, but what I find odd is that gamers always get mad when games get released and then devs just decide to patch it later.

While it looks amazing so far it really has to be 100% perfect. We've been waiting so long for it that if it ever does get released it needs to deliver in a massive way.

MystikRex

But that's the major problem developers face. Either they make a game "perfect" and risk never releasing it (Duke Nukem Forever), or settle for something less than perfect, and then improve on it over time or for a new release. GT5 will need another 5 years of development and $100 million spent to be a "perfect" racing game for current standards, let alone standards 5 years from now. All this content they are stuffing into the game is almost too much for not only the game, but the development team itself to handle.

It is going to be the best racing game ever made.

Not the best looking one, Dirt 2 has more detail and better damage model (judging by screenshots and videos).

Im just baffled by the amount of content the series has, how do they fit it all in?

Here is the scoop on the delay. Polyphony actually didn't have anything to do with it. It is a mix of piracy concerns and manufacturing issues:

GT5 delayed because of XMB OS security breach

Like I said it is manufacturing issues. I had it confirmed today.

The problem arose when SCE mandated SDK 350 on all games releasing after after October, GT5 was about to go gold running on SDK 341, but it has been delayed by around a week so that they can update to SDK 350. This has caused a big headache for the manufacturing side, given how big this game is missing the gold date by even a week can cause a months worth of delay as slots are already taken up at this time of year for Blu-ray movies and such. So Sony had to find a 3 week slot big enough to make 7m+ copies of this and get them shipped out.

If you want to blame anyone, I would direct it at the pirates and hackers, SCE never had any real SDK restrictions before firmware 3.41 was compromised.

That makes this easier to swallow.

Well it's nice to know that it's not because of the game not being done. Talk about bad timing though since the game probably isn't going to get much of a shot for this year's big holiday shopping season.

It isn't all doom and gloom. There was a press event for the game today:

GT5's Damage, Endurance Races Discussed at Room299 Press Event

Videos from the event:

Gallardo on The Ring

SLS AMG on the Rome Circuit

+/- 1000 cars

- Damage model is visual and mechanical. So your car starts pulling left or right next to visual damage. This was also evident in the demo!

- The race experience is dynamic, ie. obstacles on the track move, day/night racing,ALLcars have lights, smoke, tire marks, rollovers, weather model. Next to this it is confirmed that track conditions will affect your car, with this I mean that humidity, air temp. and track temp will all influence your car and you will have to take that into account when you set your car up. Also in regards to the weather model you will get a weather report before every race which shows you the forecast. This forecast can be accurate or not, meaning it might rain at any point in time.

- GT5 has the following licenses to use in the game:

  1. Mercedes
  2. AMG
  3. WRC
  4. NASCAR
  5. Red Bull
  6. Top Gear

- Head Tracking works with the PS eye and is confirmed. I got the chance to see this being setup with a calibration screen and started filming, however when the Sony rep noticed he kindly asked I didnt film this. He did not know exactly how to set it up but I think if calibrated properly it will work very nice. It only work in cockpit mode.

- 100 tracks in total.

- Track Generator tracks will be saved online for others to download and share. If this was on a centralized server online or on the PS3 or both was unclear. They will also be available to race online!

- There was a photo of the GT5 menu being displayed and it showed the following choices:

  1. A- Spec
  2. B-Spec
  3. Special Events
  4. Licences
  5. Used Car lot
  6. Dealerships
  7. GT Auto
  8. Practice
  9. Tuning Shop
  10. Photo Travel
  11. Official Events
  12. Car Delivery
  13. Open Lobby

The Car Delivery option was something new for me. I have no idea what it means and I also forgot to ask.

- Special Events are as follows:

  1. Karting Experience
  2. AMG Driving School
  3. Stig Challenge
  4. NASCAR driving school
  5. Red Bull Sebastian Loeb Rally Challenge
  6. GT Rally

- GT Auto had the usual things in it. I saw nothing new besides tuning.

- For Online functionality the following is confirmed:

  1. 16 player races
  2. Spectator mode
  3. Car sharing and gifting
  4. My home lobby
  5. Track Sharing
  6. Leaderboards
  7. B-Spec Remote
  8. Social Media integration

The B-spec Remote was a nice little feature here. This B-Spec feature gives someone the ability to log in on a PC or mobile device and actually do B-Spec races online from your PC or mobile device.... Interesting how that will work exactly...

- Crosstalk feature for GT PSP is confirmed and it transfers all your GT PSP cars to the arcade mode of GT5

- GTTV will be improved over Prologue

- Manufacturers Museum will be present as well. This will be a source of information about car manufacturers in the game.

- What if?... Scenarios are also confirmed. This included the Red Bull X1 car which is playable in the game.

That concludes the things covered in the press conference. After the conference there was a small competition with everyone present. Jeroen Bleekemolen (Dutch Le Mans driver) set a time on the Rome circuit in the GT pod and we were all invited to try and beat it. Fastest time would get to ride along in the SLS AMG with Jeroen Bleekemolen. I didnt even try with my Div. 5 GT skillsbecause there were two Dutch GT Academy finalists there and some fast guys from GTHQ.nl. Djie from GTHQ.nl won and got to ride along in the car. I took this opportunity to ask some specific questions to the Sony Rep, who gave the presentation, while we waited for Djie to return.

- Damaged linked to playing level? Yes. ie. easy, medium, hard or standard and professional

GTPlanet

I knew some of this but not all. I'm really excited to play with the PS Eye headtracking. That should such a cool feature.

Sounds great, track editor is more fleshed out than I expected nice. I'm still incredibly pissed about the delay but I really want to know the new release date. HOpefully before December 4th (random day I know)
