I suspect in the long run, the biggest complaint anyone will have with the game is that the standard models are ugly, and from what I've seen, they are ugly. I just hit level 2, and am working on the first FF Cup, I'm really loving it. I'm using the DS3 since my wheel is kaput. It controls perfectly. Ever since Midnight Club: Los Angeles, I've been converted over to using the left stick for steering, the right for accelerating and braking, and shifting with L2 and R2. It takes a little getting used too, but it is the only way for me.

[QUOTE="Jbul"]

I just watched about 20 minutes of that Now Playing feature.

Honest thoughts: Justin Calvert is being a bit unfair. He expects his imported cars from the PSP Gran Turismo to be completely remodeled for GT5? That seems like an unrealistic expecation to me. This permeates alot of his impressions. He also mentions that he's disappointed that his imported cars don't have cockpit views. HELLO! Dude, give me a break. The game has 1000 cars, did you expect PD to remodel all of the cars from PSPS GT history including cockpits for you? .

HOWEVER,

I am definitely a little disappointed in the presentation. The tracks look bland. The models of the bystanders look terrible, like crash-test dummies. What happened to this being THE showcase for PS3 power? Wasn't this game in development for 7 years? Also, Calvert mentioned that only "premium" vehicles recieved modeled interiors. This is disappointing. I was really looking forward to using that view for alot of the game, some of the models looked stunning. And the Karts did look terrible. My god. Could this be a case of PD stressing too much over the technical aspects of these cars, and not enough on shocking the world with a beautiful racing game?

Anyway, I can tell Calvert doesn't like the game very much, but only time will tell how this game is recieved, as well as how well it plays and how much fun it is when we all unwrap it and try it for ourselves.

CarnageHeart

IGN wasn't impressed either (they state most of the cars arent' well modeled, AI is still braindead, its too hard to damage cars, some of the track modelling sucks, the track creator isn't good, etc). The fact Sony kept the game from reviewers up until the last minute coupled with the early negative reviews is really, really lowering my expectations for GT5.

It sounds like the core gameplay is good, so as a big fan of the series I am going to pick it up after work today, but viewed through the filter of other people who have played it sounds like GT5 is a big game, ambitious game hurt by the developer's inability to know when to say when. As I often say in the context of wrpgs (especially those by Obsidian), throwing in all the stuff one can up until the game ships (as opposed to polishing a smaller amount of stuff) doesn't make for a better game.

Very true. You make an excellent point about knowing "when to say when", and just polishing what's there. It looks like they were just a little too ambitious with this one, but it still looks worthwhile for hardcore gearheads. But it certainly appears this isn't the driving game that will define a generation, like many had hoped.

The game does feel a little half baked in the sense that some of the tracks aren't as detailed as others and the standard cars just don't look right. In addition to that, if you are installing the game as you play, the menus take a while to load stuff the first time around. All of that would be bothering me more than it does if the game didn't handle so well. I think it makes a very rough first impression. It is one that GT fans will suffer through, or be completely oblivious to, but it will rub reviewers and newcomers the wrong way. I was starting to feel like I'd been sold a very different game than I was promised until about five races in when I got to go through some great tracks. Special Stage Route 5 is absolutely stunning at night. The lighting effects are something else. Soon after that, I got to play London and Madrid, both of which looked way better than Autumn Ring. I can't blame Polyphony for starting on Autumn Ring though, as I think every GT has started on that course. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is how I remember it. I think history will remember this game as the bridge between GT4 and GT6. A necessary evil to transition from the PS2 era into something modern and relevant. I kinda think the game reflects Japanese game development as a whole right now. They are late to the party and a little bit behind, but I'll be damned if there isn't some exceptional racing going on underneath all the superficial flaws. My initial thoughts are that this game will have limited appeal outside of the GT and Sim Racing fan base, but maybe that is no different than any previous game in the series.

Yeah, I knew this game would score lower than everyone expected as well - given what's been trickling out about the game, it's hard to be surprised by that. I'm tempted to pick up myself a copy during my lunch break from Future Shop. I did order one online (with a crappy racing wheel as a free preorder bonus) but I could always take that copy and return it in-store when it does arrive. Then again, I already have a ton of games to play and I could probably finish one or two in the two days it would take for the shipment to arrive.

I snuck home to get the install going so that I'm all ready to go when I'm off of work. I'm really eager to hit level 4 so that I can buy the 300ZX TT that is featured in this video. That is one of my favorite cars, and it has been the first 'fast' car I've purchased in each of the GT games. I'm a bit of a Nissan fanboy.

If you are going to buy it, go to Toysrus and save 10 bucks. the game is paused but just came in to say I'm really digging it so far, it literally pops off the screen its so nice looking (imo). Licenses are hard though, I'm very rusty.

Hey guys, I been looking at some footage of Gran Turismo 5 and it looks amazing, but I have never played a a simulator and this is my second racing game this gen DiRT 2 was the first, but that doesn't count as I never played it. i wanted to know if this is a very accesible game to new comers and for a person who loves looking at car "pornography" but have very little interest in the cars themselves, is this a good buy?

Thanks guys.

there is a free GTHD demo up on PSN. you can try it yourself.

GT is not really accessible, but it's huge among casuals, so it must be somewhat accessible.

With the assists on, the game is fairly accessible. There is a driving/braking line that you can use that will show you the ideal path through a course, along with where to start breaking, and there are various traction control and anti-lock break assists that you can turn on to help you get the hang of it. When I watch videos of people who aren't great drivers, they are usually trying to accelerate down straight sections as fast as possible and then slamming on their brakes at the last minute when they get to a corner. If you pay attention to the track and give yourself time to slow down on the turns, you'll do ok. The game isn't an arcade racer by any stretch, but with the assists on, it is pretty forgiving.

My best friend was saying that his 7 year old can play it and do fairly well, but admittedly, that kid plays way too many games.:P

The opening couple of paragraphs in the Eurogamer review just convinced me to go buy the game. see you online rag!

here it is:

The moment Gran Turismo 5 clicked for me, I was tackling the tarmac rally stages in Special Events. These point-to-point time trials take place on twisting country roads crossing the rolling landscape of Tuscany.

At the intermediate level in the rallies, the game whipped away my habitual crutch, the racing line guide that traces the best line through every corner. But that wasn't the half of it, because these rally stages are never the same twice. They're procedurally generated by the Course Maker system – one of innumerable gadgets and modes that developer Polyphony Digital has crammed into this bewilderingly eclectic release.

I couldn't even restart and painstakingly learn the track, because it wouldn't be the same track. So I watched the road, listened to the pace notes and felt my Impreza countersteer out of bends and buck over bumps, taking my heart in my mouth with every blind crest.

Suddenly – after two days' play – I wasn't playing a sim racing game any more. I wasn't learning a litany of trackside cues and cornering rhythms I might as well perform with my eyes shut. I was driving with the seat of my pants on the open road, feeling a powerful car under me, mapping the next bend with my intuition.

This is an experience I'd always longed for, something I'd glimpsed parts of in Project Gotham 2's Nordschleife Nürburgring or Test Drive Unlimited's untamed roadmap – but never so vividly, and never with such profoundly realistic handling.

For me, this is the Holy Grail of driving games. And yet it's one throwaway and all-too-brief event tucked away in a corner of Kazunori Yamauchi's sprawling empire of digital motorsport. I could quite easily have played GT5 for dozens of hours and written this review without even knowing it existed.

That, in a nutshell, is everything that's extraordinary and infuriating about this vast, mad, once-in-a-lifetime game.

Eurogamer writes some of my favorite reviews by a long shot. Their review of Demon's Souls was perfect. I always feel like they are able to articulate why a game is great in a review without just barfing out a bunch of bulletpoints.

I picked up a cheap red convertible (I've always wanted a convertible) though I haven't driven it yet since I'm going through the first series of licensing tests. The graphics are unimpressive, but the driving feels great (admittedly, I've only driven a couple low end cars).

You sure? I thought they had removed GTHD from PSN years ago - I tried nabbing it when I got my MGS4 bundled PS3 but it was already gone at that point. I think the Time Trial demo is gone now too, and I don't think GT5P has a demo of any kind either, which is a bit odd.

I'll have to check when I get home to make for sure, but I remember people saying that Sony had removed GTHD so that people who wanted to play a Gran Turismo would have to buy GT5P. I think the timing worked out that way too, with HD being nuked a few months before Prologue's release.

The Karts are a blast. Wow... they are squirrely little bastards. I love the feeling of this game. The way the tires grip is perfect. You can really feel it in the rumble when you are losing traction on a corner. Also, a good tip for starting out, you get a lot of XP and money for doing the special events.

Yes they are awesome, I just did the beginners track and flew all around that sucker, although the AI was very far behind for some reason. I bought a blockbuster game pass for one month that expires Jan 1 and I don't even want to use it, I just want to play this freaking game. Its cool how you view your friends career mode although I wish it was more in depth. Still the menus are unrivaled imo. As for the physics, they are definitely fun, I haven't driven anything too fast yet but I am still reserving judgement because I found the Time Trial demos physics to be absolutely perfect and so far this feels too forgiving. Although turning ABS from 1 to 0 makes the game even harder than TT. GT is usually really good with the assist sliders feeling very noticable with each notch you move but here it seems like it doesnt make too much of a difference until you go from 1 to off. Than its radically different, not sure why.

@ DJ only people who downloaded GTHD can redownload it, unfortunately.

@ Carnage: Man the graphics are freaking incredible, minus one track so far. Mind blown :P

A little off topic, but...

That's one thing I hated about the Game Pass. The people working at Blockbuster were wrong half the time about arrival times, and always sounded less than enthused to be helping me when I'd call to see if a game was in stock. It's not my fault you work at BB, stop being so b*****!

I'm also glad to hear most of you are enjoying the game -- it sounds like they nailed the most important part -- the gameplay.

oh you have no idea. the game controls like a dream. just played this Neodumbring (sp? lol) time trial track and the sense of speed in the cockpit view was absolutely insane. the car itself controlled like something out of motorstorm, reacting to everyone of my little adjustments. I came close to spinning out of control a couple of times, but a couple of tweaks here and there, foot off the gas and a slight push of brakes was all that was needed. It was beautiful.

i wish i was a car enthusiast because right now i have 150K credits and i dont know which car to buy. already bought my fav BMW Z4, but at 227HP it's not doing me any favors in the amateur races. the problem is that most races require different cars like in GT3 and i hate that. lol

BTW, i was suprised to see how amazing the premium cars look. especially in the menus. i came close to an orgasm, i s**** you not. the game looks pretty good overall, not as big a leap as GT3 was, but impressive nonetheless. Though i must say seeing tearing and jaggies, especially on shadows, is really surprising in a GT game. I also haven't seen any damage whatsoever.

Nascar is great fun, and go karting is just awesome. lol. That neodumbring track has to be the most thrilling track i've ever played and i have played and beaten Motorstorm Pacific Rift. It was simply car porn, i have no other way to put it.

It's called Nerburghring.:P If I was you, I'd look into getting a GT-R. They are fast and all-wheel-drive, so they handle just about anything. My favorite one isn't in the Nissan dealership, but in the Mine's dealership. The Mine's GTR-34 was a beast in GT5P. I'm saving up for it right now. It is 200,000 credits, but well worth it.

If you guys want to see photo realistic, go to the first license in A section a:shock:nd choose the third person perspective. I have never seen anything as close to real life in a game.

I golded all B licenses, some were pretty fun for the beginners stuff. Can't wait to see the more challenging ones its going to be insane.

i wont even touch the licenses. i hate repeating stuff because i went offtrack. I am glad we are not forced to do them anymore, AFAIR they were mendatory in GT3. (or GT1&2)

I haven't seen a premium that old. I'm looking for a Japanese car that old as well for one of the early cups in the game. I've got my eye out for either a Nissan 240Z or a 280ZX. I drive a 280ZX in real life, and it is a lot of fun. In any case, all of those cars are Nissans, including the GT-R. The ones that will be really good would be the GTR-32, GTR-33, GTR-34 and the GTR, which is the newest one.

Solid make sure you try that license I mentioned just for the photorealism!

I played some online with a friend earlier and its quite simply amazing. Unlike prologue, cars dont jump around the track (99% of the time) and you can actually make clean moves on them. Graphics don't seem downgraded either, how the hell! We better have an online meet tomorrow, I'll host since I played around with the settings and know whats up. Although I don't want to use anything above 250 hp for now. What do you wussies say? Dont worry about me kicking your asses, there is an option that gives slower players faster cars each race for an advantage.

I played this until my eyes hurt tonight. I'm loving it very much. I just beat the Intermediate Kart Races and I'm trying to find some good used cars to finish off all of the Beginner's Cup stuff. I've done some in the Amateur Cup as well. Right now, the only cars I own that I like are the 300ZX TT and the GTR-32. The rest are cars I've bought to beat various events.

I' finally level 10 and ready to do some rally challenges, i've bought rally tires but they dont go with any cars that i own. The rally cars in the dealership are too expensive even though i have almost 400K in the bank. Before buy a different car, how can i know they are compatible with dirt tires?

edit: nvm bought a civc

If you guys want to see photo realistic, go to the first license in A section a:shock:nd choose the third person perspective. I have never seen anything as close to real life in a game.

I golded all B licenses, some were pretty fun for the beginners stuff. Can't wait to see the more challenging ones its going to be insane.

My copy is supposed to arrive today. Can't wait. Although to be honest I'm going to be entering the game with lowered expectations (given everything I've read) so I'll probably be pleasantly surprised when the game isn't terrible. Still sore there's no Ford Sierra Cosworth in it, though. We get dozens of Skylines, Imprezas, and Lancers and less attention paid to cars with just as much racing pedigree (I know Polyphony is Japanese but still). I'm thinking I might go with an Alfa as my starting car if it'll let me. I'd love to go with the Sprint (the old 60s model) but I have a feeling the price on that one will be ridiculous, and I'm not sure how the starting cars are cut off. Or do you just get a whack of money and can buy anything?

you start off with 20K credits and you will be forced to buy a Used car. however, after the first set of races, you should have enough to buy a cheap premium car. i havent bought another used car since my first, especially since you get a free Gift car if you get Gold in all races of an event.

One thing I would recommend is doing the Special Events. Most of them are easy (nascar ones are a bit tough, but a lot of fun) and if you get gold, you get the cash for the Silver and Bronze prizes as well as the one for Gold. So you can end up getting upto 50K just by doing a couple of raelly short races/challenges. you also get a crapload of XP which helps you level up a lot faster and unlocks even more challenges and cars in the premium shops.

Dont bother with the licenses if you just wanna level up, because you dont get any cash and hardly any XP.

That sounds like a good idea. Are the special events similar to the ones in GT4? I think they had some overtake ones, some drafting ones, and then some really annoying 'bonus' overtaking missions like the Mercedes Nurburgring one where you had to wait 3 or 4 minutes after restarting before you were even allowed to move.

I think the rally stages in GT4 were also good for a whack of change, and they were easy to win as you could ride the walls with the ass end of your car without penalty (I hope they fixed that).

It's weird, I'm not usually excited about a game but I can't wait to play this one. And I'm tempted to leave work early as my package will probably arrive while I'm not home (boo).

i didnt play much of GT4, so the special events were new to me. Yes, the Nascar ones have drafting and overtaking challenges. there is also go karts, the neoburgring tracks, point to point rally races, and a couple other surprises. i have been playing the nueburgring tracks, and havent been forced to wait at all.
