Got the game, will probably install it later today because not doing it makes navigating everything way too slow. Man, it's been forever since I played a non-arcadey racer, I'm already dreading the license tests.

they arent mendatory, and since the driving physics have been massively improved, the game is actually pretty fun.
did the ten B-license tests today, didnt have to repeat a single one. Getting gold might be a bit tougher, but it's not that tough.
That's a relief to hear. I had quite a few moments in GT3 that left me raging a lot. I'm going to try and take it a little slower this time.
Oh yeah, that new Kevin Butler GT5 commercial was hilarious.
Yeah I was the same, I have got the B, and A licenses at National level and International C licenses with maybe two or three that I had to repeat once or twice. Its nowhere near as demanding as GT3 thankfully but it still has some wierd thing for me where I hate the license tests but on this I seem compelled to do them :? That said I am enjoying this game so far.[QUOTE="S0lidSnake"]
you start off with 20K credits and you will be forced to buy a Used car. however, after the first set of races, you should have enough to buy a cheap premium car. i havent bought another used car since my first, especially since you get a free Gift car if you get Gold in all races of an event.
One thing I would recommend is doing the Special Events. Most of them are easy (nascar ones are a bit tough, but a lot of fun) and if you get gold, you get the cash for the Silver and Bronze prizes as well as the one for Gold. So you can end up getting upto 50K just by doing a couple of raelly short races/challenges. you also get a crapload of XP which helps you level up a lot faster and unlocks even more challenges and cars in the premium shops.
Dont bother with the licenses if you just wanna level up, because you dont get any cash and hardly any XP.
DJ_Lae
That sounds like a good idea. Are the special events similar to the ones in GT4? I think they had some overtake ones, some drafting ones, and then some really annoying 'bonus' overtaking missions like the Mercedes Nurburgring one where you had to wait 3 or 4 minutes after restarting before you were even allowed to move.
I think the rally stages in GT4 were also good for a whack of change, and they were easy to win as you could ride the walls with the ass end of your car without penalty (I hope they fixed that).
It's weird, I'm not usually excited about a game but I can't wait to play this one. And I'm tempted to leave work early as my package will probably arrive while I'm not home (boo).
You can buy a premium civic if you don't want to start with a standard, I think at some point you will end up using one though. Definitely lower your expectations though if you are a huge fan of Forza, they don't really do the same things. You can buy a premium civic if you don't want to start with a standard, I think at some point you will end up using one though. yup, everyone should go in this game with the lowest of expectations. because this is not the perfect racer we all wanted it to be. I mean i just played an all Ferrari race and won by slamming into a pack of cars on a sharp turn and getting away just like in past GT games. No damage really is disappointing.
There'll be a patch for the game this Saturday to tweak some settings in online.
"We received a lot of demands for having more regulations placed on the online play. We're going to perform an update on the 27th that will include things like max power restrictions and weight restrictions," Yamauchi said.
"It's like a living creature, dynamically growing as we speak."
According to Yamauchi, the update will "refine the usability of the game to make it a better experience.

There are rumors of an update on December 1st.
It says the patch will unlock (optional) damage for arcade/lower levels, rather than only be available for level 20 and up.
Furthermore, there will be a (small) performance upgrade. They expect more updates before ChristmasSome German Site
They'll be adding leaderboards soon, and the first DLC will add more special events to the game.

Ya damage is unlocked at higher levels, ^ hopefully that patch lets us unlock it right away.Man GS forums suck ass!
Anyway, rag where can i get some decent 60s and 70s cars? i looked in the used car section but didnt see anything other than 90s cars.
Also, how comes i cant upgrade any of my cars? What kinda cars do they have to be?
For American cars, Chevy has some good ones. There is a 70's Corvette for 50,000 and a 68 Camaro SS for 62,000. I haven't found a good Japanese car from the 60's or 70's, but there might be one in the dealerships, I didn't look in the Toyota dealer yet.Man GS forums suck ass!

Nice, I do hope we get a Red Bull special event as Vettel has not been in the game so far from what I have played. Maybe add a Red Bull F1 car and have Vettel do some work on Monza or even better, a new F1 track thrown into the game such as Valencia, Spa etc. Also just a question relating to anybody who may answer, I am currently level 8 and am working on the international license sets. Will I win the cars that are correct for winning those license events (i.e. a good car for getting up the higher license tests) or does my level mean I will be restricted to the lower power cars in award for completing the license tests?I love the control/physics of GT5 (even though the highest horsepower vehicle in my garage is the humble Cappuchino) and with its ton and a half of content, I will probably play it on and off up until GT6, but its disappointing that it has fallen into the 'ship it, then patch it' pattern so many games this gen have fallen into.CarnageHearti've driven cars with HPs upto 700hp, but aside from the awful Lamborghini, everything else controlled well. I think the biggest difference in this game is that you can prevent you car from spinning out easier. The blue line helps a lot too. Probably why i beat the licenses so easily.
TBH, the game wouldnt have come out for another two years if Kaz had his way. I think it's BS that he took 6 years to make the game and still released it without matchmaking and AA and tearing issues. THat said, i am happy it's here. I skipped GT4 and the last real sim i played was GT3 almost ten years ago, so maybe thats why i am enjoying it so much.
Played a couple of hours tonight - really not feeling it yet. I was having some serious v-sync and AA issues, so I went into my settings and disabled 1080i/p (my TV supports both although it simply downconverts 1080p to 1080i) to force the game to run at 720p. I wish I could set it so that Blu-rays launch at 1080i and games use 720p. Oh well. Didn't really help the graphical issues, though. So far my impressions basically consist of the long load times, offensively jagged shadows (is my PS3 dying or are the shadows awful? the pre-race camera circle really highlights them), and long load times. I started with a Vitz as my cousins and I turned that car into somewhat of a staple in our GT3/GT4 experience and I can't in good conscience race a Civic of any kind. Decent little car, if slow, but some upgrades fixed that. I kind of wish the upgrade pages gave you a quicker indication of what they do without having to highlight every single one. They look nice, but like most of the GT menus they're form over function. Especially the main menu. Did the go-kart and nascar challenges, gave up after a couple of tries at the Top Gear one. Like with GT4, it's a weird disconnect having races where you can barrel off cars and walls and the game doesn't care, then jump to challenges where one wheel off the track will instantly disqualify you. The go-karts were kind of fun, if squirrely to handle. The early tracks aren't exactly lookers, either, and the process of doing license challenges is painful with all of the load times between each one. I only made it halfway through my b license before my daughter started getting fussy and I had to shut off my PS3, though. The handling seems improved so far, though. I turned off most of the assists - left traction control and ABS on their lowest setting above 'off' and kept automatic shifting on. I'll probably change that later, and really, a low power front wheel drive car isn't exactly something to show off a physics engine, but understeer feels very similar to Forza 3 and other than the mushy triggers it all works extremely well. I may bump ABS back up a bit, though, because the game doesn't really give you much of an indication when your brakes are locking up (Forza 2 had the same problem). When I get enough money - blew some upgrading the Vitz - I'm going to buy an old Supra and enter some of the other races. Weirdly it looks as if I could enter it in the compact car challenge, because for some bizarre reason that cup doesn't seem to have any restrictions at all. I could have sworn GT4 had a length restriction, and by all accounts that would make sense. Who knows. I'd imagine my experience will pick up as I spend more time with the game, but there isn't really anything about it that gives a good first impression (especially the intro. yuck).DJ_Lae
Yup, the game doesn't make a good first impression. It does get better IMO when you get some high power cars, and tuned cars. I think that's where the physics engine truly shines.
As for tearing, i think it only occurs in the more detailed tracks like the london track and Rome. The other more open tracks have very little tearing, but those tracks dont look so good either.
Oh and it's not just you, i noticed the lack of AA on shadows immediately. God it's terrible.
Right now my biggest complaint about the game, aside from the uneven presentation is the used car dealerships and the availability of cars. I've got a good 10 hours into this game and still haven't seen a Japanese sports car from the 60's/70's show up for purchase, yet one of the first events in the game requires you to have one. I realize that the game doesn't have to be played in order, but I kinda wanted to do it that way. I'm working on the AMG special events and loving it. Nurburgring is such a great track.rragnaar
you get gifted those cars when you complete other more advanced events in the game. A few Amateur or Professional event i've golded so far has given something useful i could use in the previous events. If not that, i just bought a Ferrari to use in the Professional events, and went back and golded all the previous Italy events in the game. I am glad i didnt waste money buying a s***ty alfa romeo or something.
But yeah, i see where you are coming from. The used car dealership should have been better implemented.
Also, i have the perfect car for the Beginner japanese challenge that i got as a gift. I tuned it so i easily beat that challenge. i have no use for it now, so if you want i can gift it to you. (i personally love that feature in this game, and i am dying to use it. :P )
BTW, I have a quick question. My rally cars have absolutely no grip whatsoever. I am good HP wise, but how can i make sure they dont slip around corners during rally races?
I just did my first rally race, so I'm not much help. They are supposed to be somewhat loose. I bought a Lancia DELTA HF as well as doing all of the weight reductions for it, and buying a good suspension. I came in first and it didn't seem too rough. It might be because I grew up on dirt roads though.:P
edit: I'd be very grateful if you wanted to gift that car to me. I'll find a way to pay you back.
I think 80s models should be the very oldest generation of model we will see in GT5, and when in 2020 augmented reality gaming hits, well for those of you who have never heard of augmented reality, track me and watch my blog for updates on where augmented reality gaming is developing.
Thanks S0lid! I sent you one of my favorite cars in return. The Nissan 370Z. It isn't anything too special in the context of the game, but it is fun to drive.rragnaar

Gift cars show up in the 'car deliveries' section. You'll have to deliver it to your garage first. The one I sent you is the 370Z from 2008.This game is consuming my entire thoughts 24 hours a day except during the thanksgiving football games :P F1Lengend
i actually wake up early everyday to play it. when i am dreaming, i am dreaming of it. it's sad. i've already put in over 20 hours playing it in three days.

The cars you win are the same for everyone, I'm assuming the harder ones will be much better cars of course. So your level doesn't matter.Car trading would definitely be helpful with the way used cars are randomly handed out. Feel free to add me - DJLay on PSN. Don't know if I have to do anything else in-game, though, the initial setup was kind of confusing and I just sort of skipped through it and bought myself a car.DJ_Lae
I am done for the day, but I will add you tomorrow.
I tried to play online today but after 15 minutes of going in and out of rooms with 5,6 lap races i got fed up with it. WTF is wrong with people playing races that long? it doesnt help that the game lobby doesnt tell you if the race is still going, so you have to enter and load up the track for each room before you realize you will have to wait 4 more laps for the race to finish.

Thats a long race? Man you're hopeless. Anyway I saw an option on the game rooms that says "in race" or not. Its that green icon. Or are you talking about something else.
Edit: How did you get the old Japanese car for the beginner challenge? You won it right?

yup i won it after finishing the 90s japanese challenge in the Amatuer Event. i realized very early on to not waste time trying to buy up cheap cars, i simply moved on to higher level events, bought a car, pimped it out, golded all the events and had the game gift me practically everything i needed. some of the gifts are s***, but some do help you out. for instance, i just did this one race Ferrari event in Professional mode and it gifted me a 08 Ferrari, just like that. i dont even need it since ive already pimped out the ferrari i bought for other events, so if anyone wants it, i can share it.
but yeah, if a race is locked i simply move on to a different race or the Special Events. I golded all the Nascar intermediate challenges, got 100K just like that and some 10,000 EXP. Thanks to special events, i havent had to grind or repeat any races even once. even after i mistakenly spent close to 200K trying to pimp up my muscle car.
EDIT: I hate 5 lap races. they can last upto 10 minutes and can be a grind. espcially since the game has no rewind feature. right now i am stuck a few professional races with my 791hp ferrari, have spent 50K reducing the weight by 300KG but cant for the life of me learn how cut past corners.
lol GT5 is getting trolled at gaf pretty bad.
Anyway, here is the Digital Foundary article to all those baffled by the graphical issues in this game.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-gran-turismo-5-tech-analysis
It seems like the game uses 4XMSAA in 720p mode, and 2XQAA in 1080p mode. So switching to 720p would get rid of the jaggies, right? Wrong. It isn't that simple. The problem with the jaggies on shadows is because the game has day/night cycles which means they had to do realtime shadows instead of prebaked shadows. Obviously they weren't able to eliminate jaggies in time for release so we are preetty much stuck with these terrible looking shadows. that said, there is good news. If you have a 1080p tv, select Sharpen instead of Normal mode in the options and that is said to improve the image quality a bit. At least, according to gaf.
Also, 1080p is not full 1920X1080 resolution, it's 1280X1080. Still 50% more pixels than 720p but not full HD. It's upscales the image to 1080p. Another thing they mention is how tearing and framerate issues in GT5 were not present in GT4, a PS2 game. That said, there is absolutely nothing in the market that has 4XMSAA + 60 fps at 720p. Or a racer that does 1080p a 60fps with 2XQAA. All with car models more detailed than any character model or car model in any game so far, and let's not forget it does all this with 16 cars on screen. (Forza 3, its closes competiter has only 8 )
TBH, these things dont quite bother me that much because tearing is only apparent in some city tracks, and jaggies are not apparent in FPS view which is my preferred view in the game. What matters is the sense of speed this game has managed to achieve. Going 190mph+ feels like you are going 190mph+. the fact that i am able to control my car perfectly going that fast speaks volumes about this game's physics and graphics engines.
My issue is with the terrible online lobby system. i mean wtf were these guys doing since the 2+ years GT5P came out? We had games like Burnout in 2008 that had INSTANT online. Going through the lobby system in GT5 is like going back in time to the PS2 network adapter days. It's terrible.
Thanks for the help regarding the license test rewards :) So who here has tried B-Spec mode?Garfield360UK
I tried it, but I don't completely understand what I'm supposed to be doing. I just kept telling my driver to calm down because for whatever reason he kept flipping the **** over nothing and was always losing control. Every other option made the bar go red, so I just kept selecting that one option and ended up in 3rd place. I might try it again, but it doesn't seem like it's for me now.
How many of the 1000 cars are premium cars? So far everything I've won so far are standard cars, and I kind of like driving from the first person perspective with all the nice little details.

200 cars are premium, the rest are standard.
i think you have to buy most premium cars in the beginning. Some Amateur and most Professional events gift you premium cars (i was gifted a premium Ferrari), but the beginner races wont give you s***.
BTW, did you mean the cockpit view? i consider the bumper cam to be first person..... i dont know why, but yeah i suppose the first person would be cockpit view.
Okay, so I've played this game for over 35 hours now. Need to get a couple of things off my chest:
Pros:
Cons:

I am not sure if you guys can just take them from my profile or if i have to gift it to you, but feel free to ask me for any of those cars.
P.S The game actually has a message board in the community section, no need to switch to the XMB for messages anymore. success!
P.P.S Just lost the Silver on Nurburgring full track by only 1.2 seconds. FML.

I bought the one I used. It sucked, but it got the job done. I didn't realize that sharing a car meant anyone could use it. I thought you had to gift a car in order for someone to be able to use it. I know your pain on the Nurburgring stuff. It is a heartbreaker to get so close to that medal and not get it. I finally got all silvers on the intermediate one earlier today. Please Log In to post.
