i really like the online setup btw. the races were lag free and very easy to set up. love the lobby system, pretty awesome. All games should have something so simple, love how the tracks load up in the background while you are still in the menu. Pretty cool stuff. It's mindboggling that a matchmaking system wasn't put into place because once you have joined a lobby, it's VERY smooth.

i think i am going to wait on Dead Nation till the Weekend. I am too into GT5 right now. But vader, the online is so fun that i would gladly come back and play with you guys any time. Just beware of rag, he bumps A LOT. We had to turn on penalties because he would keep slamming his cars into us, spinning out of control on a simple turn and whatnot.

:P

...right... I was the one bumping into people in the NASCAR race and making them spin out on the first corner... That's exactly how I remember it.:P

Just did the first rally race after trying to figure out what car I should enter under 245hp. I kept bumping into Audis with 246hp, which was kind of annoying, and then I remembered the Lancia Delta, which I promptly bought up and upgraded a tiny bit to make it more competitive. Or what I thought would be competitive, as you don't get a sense of what the rally competition actually is. I don't really like the layout of those races, but I'm glad I won because I won't have to sit through three loads just to win a race that takes about 3 minutes of driving time. They also don't do you any favours by making you wait around for 20 seconds or so at the beginning of each run, so I think I spent almost as much time loading or waiting as I did driving. Also got that Cosworth tuned Mercedes 190E in the used dealer - I had to snatch it up, even if I doubt it'll ever be competitive for any race that isn't the Sunday Cup.

Anything involving Nascar makes me rage. I don't think I'll ever make a joke about those races and turning left again; it's a lot harder than it looks. I spent the good part of an hour trying to do the intermediate challenges today. Creepy-looking Jeff Gordon's pep talks didn't help me much either. Aside from that, my car collection is growing, my driving technique is improving a little, and I'm definitely digging this game much more than my initial impressions. I also got to play a bunch of online races for the first time today and had a blast doing so, would definitely like to get some more games in.

Nice. It's a shame you had to race against S0lid, GGD's most feared car bumper. We definitely could use more ppl online, though.

I think I'll be online tonight for some racing if anyone is up for it. If everyone has enough credits, we should set a horsepower limit and bring our own cars in just for fun.

I'll try to join you guys tonight but most likely I'll be watching the Cavaliers/Heat game along with the NFL game. Oh Rag, how long was it before you found a car to use for the Japanese Classic in Beginner Series? I cannot find a car from the used store. :(

S0lid gifted one to me, which then got lost when I tried to gift it to a friend. Shortly after that, when I didn't need it, a 1979 280Z showed up in the used dealer.

Anyone know if there's a way to race on the Top Gear track without a rolling start? Arcade mode seems to force that, and I'd love to be able to do my own reasonably priced car lap (though none of the reasonably priced cars are in the game as far as I know)..

They were Datsuns in the states and Nissans in Japan, so it is listed as a Nissan in GT5. In the early 80's Datsun became Nissan in the US.

Did you try Practice Mode? That might work.

I was just basing that on the very little knowledge I know about cars. Thanks for answering that question.

I'm a pretty poor racer myself, but it's been a real fun ride so far online and off... minus some of the challenges. I angrily shake my fist at that intermediate Lotus challenge. You run over a pebble and that car spins around like its tires were dipped in grease, not to mention the slightest mistake will disqualify you... argh!

By the way, thanks for the Ferrarri, Solid. That thing's a beast, it's so powerful I can barely control it, but it's fun to use. If you guys are doing HP restriction, then that's the fastest car I have so far. Everything else is about 150hp+ with the exception of one or two cars.

lol i have no idea why you have so much trouble with the Nascar races. The challenges i understand are tough to gold, but the races we did on the Daytona track are really easy. You never have to pull off the gas, simply follow the yellow line (shortest route) steering just enough to keep your car straight. If you find yourself behind, try to get right behind the car infront of you or if it's too far ahead of you, find a partner and stay behind him, it should give you BOTH a boost. So last night when i was ahead and you and steel were neck and neck, instead of trying to take over each other, simple partner up, and you both will get a speed increase. we will try that next time if you arent completely sick of Nascar. :P

That lotus is a pos, i refuse to take that challenge or any top gear challenge. just not for me. as for getting Silver in the Nurburgring challenge, all you need to do is turn down the traction control which is set at max (10) by default. that controls your accelartion input i believe, i turned it down to five and saw an immediate increase in my time. But the car was harder to control. I balanced it by turning on the Active Steering to Mild and setting the ABS up a bit. After a few tries, i was able to set Traction control all the way down to 1. I easily beat the full track in time for a Silver. just remember that ABS, Active steering and Traction control all control your brakes and acceleration, so while they will keep you from spinning out, they definitely keep you from reaching the fastest times.

i have more fun playing the online races than i do offline. Offline is more about buying new cars, and tuning my cars than it is buying actual racing thanks to an AI that never makes mistakes. They never take any risks, whether they are ahead of you or trailing you. So basically if you are trailing, YOU have to take the risks, drive faster around corners in the hopes of ever catching them.

Online, last night we went into the last three turns with me in first place, steel behind me and dez in last place. steel tried to sneak behind me, we both collided and lost a bit of acceleration, dez went ahead and won the race. In single player, this would never happen since both the first and second place cars dont take any risks, so if you are in third place, YOU have to drive like a maniac because the 2nd place AI driver wont try to take the 1st spot.

i had a lot of fun playing online, especially the races with a lot of turns. it kept all the races very close and fun.

i think all the cars are resonably priced. i see tons of cars in the 30-50K range. you get that much for Getting golds in a single Special Event challenge.

That said, if you need any cars, i'd be more than happy to share them. If you click on my profile, you will see a few cars, just let me know if you need one and i will gift it you.

Also, let us know if you will be up for some online. We had three guys yesterday, i saw you playing Sly Cooper and didnt wanna bother you, but if you're up for some online, i can message you on PSN.

I need to turn some assists back on - I disabled skid control and put ABS and traction control to 0 as I raced in Forza 3 with everything off and figured I could do it here. (wanted to compare the core driving mechanics too) Unfortunately, GT's stock tires are really awful, so any car with more than 50hp spins out too easy (I'm also using a controller, and those triggers are tough to regulate). Race tires are very drivable with assists off though.

Yay! I found a car for the Japanese series which wasn't the car I wanted but after upgrading it, it worked just fine. I think I'm going to try to gold Nurburgring. I already have silvers on beginner and intermediate with an average of 2-3 seconds away from gold.

whats the difference b/w cheap and more expensive tires? i am afraid to buy the 30K tires since they are supposed to worn out really fast. I just dont know how long exactly they would last me.

Have you tried different control layouts? I've got steering on the left stick, gas and brake on the right stick, with R1 as handbrake and L2 and R2 as my shifters. It works perfectly. I think the analog stick is way better than a shoulder button when it comes to the degree of control you have. Also, I enjoy that I never have to use the facebuttons.

S0lidSnake
Grip. The starter tires are pretty awful and are horrible for accelerating hard, braking hard, or turning. By bumping up to the race tires (even the race hard ones) you get a car that controls a lot better and have the ability to brake later, turn harder, and stomp on the gas without losing control in a high powered rear-wheel drive car. Of course, some of that is mitigated with the assists (traction control particularly, I'd imagine), but the tires still help. I don't think wear would be an enormous issue unless you're doing a long endurance race, though, as the tires reset themselves with every race. And if GT4 is any indication you'll probably have to pit in one of those endurance races more often to change your tires than you will to refuel. I put race tires (mediums) on my Ferrari 512 and it made a huge difference in handling.

I have traction control at 2, abs at 1 and active steering at mild. I honestly don't know how that affects performance but thats what I had it set to when I was doing one of the license tests.

I have, and I used to drive with the right analog stick for gas/brake in GT4, but I've played so many racing games using the triggers as gas and brake since then that I can't go back. I keep braking accidentally in GT5 by trying to use the right analog stick to look around, actually. I'm using the real triggers, and they help, but if the triggers were a little more resistant (like the 360s, which I think are perfect for racing) that would be great. Maybe I can cobble together a makeshift spring or something.
Tonight was a lot of fun! That is the last time I run the lounge though. Too many decisions for my poor brain to handle.F1Lengend
I'll do it, but I want to enable all of the restrictions except traction control and ABS....What? No one wants to play? I see how it is.

I can race against the computer that way, but that is because the computer isn't actively trying to run me off the road.:P
S0lid makes a great scapegoat.
I just found out that my Skyline 2000-GT-B '67 doesn't have a 6th gear so now I can't complete the world circuit called circuit de la Sarthe 2009. I have everything upgraded but just get passed by everyone on that one long stretch of road and keep losing. :(

buy fully customizable transmission. it should let you change the max speed. my dodge charger also topped out at 100mph on the 4th gear, but buying that transmission let me go in change it.

I bought that but I can still only do 5 gears and a max of 113 mph. Lucky I just beat it by .001 seconds and I just got the trophy for it too. :P It just sounded really nasty everytime it was trying to change into 6th gear but couldn't.

You can adjust your top speed in the tuning menu. It will give you slower acceleration, but you'll eventually go faster.

I didn't know you could do that. I'll check it out.

Actually, I have no idea what you're talking about. Where can I find this?

Go to your garage, select your car, then go to the tuning menu. Once there, select your transmission. If you've got the fully customizable one, you'll be able to adjust the gearing to get a higher top speed.

It took me a bit to figure out what you mean but I didn't realize there was an icon you had to click to change the speed. This is going to help out a lot. I wish I knew about this a long time ago.

Before the rest of people come here and try to spin my wins tonight into some sort of 'car-bumping-cheater' bs, i just wanted to say, "OWNED!"

Your proper driving etiquette is in dire need of improvement ,good sir, because your car handling was largely responsible for the vast number of victories you unfairly acquired this evening.

Good races tonight. Lot's of fun playing with you guys. Let's get some more folks from around here next time. The more the merrier.

lol regarding the Nascarrace, there was nothing unfair about F1 spinning out of control for no reason on the first turn, me swerving to avoid it, barely hitting you causing you to lose control and cause that massive 4 car pile up. I saw it all in my rear view mirror and couldnt stop laughing.

rag, giving up right away and coming after me hitting mehead on was also hilarious. i never thought rag would be the one driving the other way considering he's a righteous mod and all.

I dont know why but i laughed a lot yesterday, glad we werent using mics because sometimes the crashes were too funny. how you guys manage to spin out going on a straight stretch is beyond me.
