Why is it that Apple dislikes competition so much? Â
Â
If you really offered a great product, competition should be encouraged, as it only makes you stronger.Â

Or, you could be the only company people can buy from. :P
Competition is only ever good for the consumer. For a corporation, it's all that standing between them and total market domination.

In some places and in some ways, monopoly is supposed to be illegal, but it really isn't enforced.. Â

The part where Apple has the intellectual property right granted by an agency of the European Union and they are protecting that IP? Yea, I think we would all do the same. Yea, I'm glad Samsung doesn't practice these evil ways. lolDon't even care about Samsung, it was about using an Android tablet. You can find dirt on just about any company.
In truth though, the whole concept of a tablet is pretty impractical. I don't see any situation where I would not have access to a laptop but I would to a tablet. Â
You should probably quit video gaming. If you think the concept of owning a very portable computer is impractical, you would probably also agree that sitting around on your rump sinking time into a hobby that doesn't result in anything tangible or helpful is also pretty pointless. A very portable and limited computer. I don't use a device because of how it looks or what it is, I use it because of what it can accomplish. I didn't buy a slick gaming laptop when I wanted something for gaming, I built a monstrous tower, because it can accomplish a lot more, for less money.
My cellphone even, can make calls and send texts, it isn't a smartphone, if in the future I work at a place that needs it, than that would be fine.
If I need to browse the internet on a small device when I'm out, I would get a netbook. Also, I can't stand touchscreens. Â

You are free to skip my posts, I'm sorry for taking upwards of 15 seconds of your time.
I still believe android is more practical, and that was where this argument started, it was relevant to the thread.Â
I also do have an opinion on dirty business practices, and even though Samsung does it too, does not mean it is okay for Apple to do it. It's too bad Apple is flawless to most of its supporters though.Â
Any instance in which Apple isn't looked at as the overpriced, style-over-substance bad guy is an instance in which people seem to worship at the alter of the unfailing almighty Steve Jobs -- nobody here said Apple was flawless. With that in mind, why anyone would buy a non-Apple tablet is truly a mystery to me. It's probably for their own good at people in Europe and Australia will have a tough time getting their hands on the Galaxy Tab.You are free to skip my posts, I'm sorry for taking upwards of 15 seconds of your time.

Did you read the article I linked to earlier? It explains a lot, keeping in mind the fact that before the iPad, there really was no mass produced tablet computer with a dedicated mobile OS to set a standard.Apple's new way of "competing" in a nutshell.
"What? A competitor has arisen in a market we have a vested interest in? SUE THEM!!!"
Sure, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is highly similar to the iPad in terms of design (at least from a hardware standpoint) but that doesn't explain why they're now suing Motorola over the Xoom.

Unless I missed something it only explains the procedures and law surrounding the injunction, not how in the name of all that is good and holy Apple managed to get such a generic patent int the first place (or how any judge in their right mind could uphold it). From a patent point of view the iPad's design is already minimalist-verging-on-non-existent, and the actual community design patent is even less detailed -- the only thing unique or even remotely close to an inventive step is the inclusion of an Apple 30-pin connector, and the Tab 10.1 sure as hell doesn't have one of those.
Apple has slightly more of an argument with TouchWiz UX -- particularly the settings screen -- but again, we're largely dealing with a lack of inventive step: the general iOS UI is so basic and common sense that unless Samsung is stealing the actual graphics/animations (again, the settings screen) or code there just isn't much of a case.

Apparantly popularizing an existing concept gives you exclusive rights to it.110millionMore like Samsung is trying to capitalize on what Apple made popular. How man tablets did they make before the ipad? *ponders* Maybe you can move to Europe, become a citizen, get a law degree, run for European Council Regulation comity and change their trademark laws. Over there "An industrial design consists of the creation of a shape, configuration or composition of pattern or color, or combination of pattern and color in three dimensional form containing aesthetic value. An industrial design can be a two- or three-dimensional pattern used to produce a product, industrial commodity or handicraft. A design is defined as "the appearance of the whole or a part of a product resulting from the features of, in particular, the lines, contours, colors, shape, texture and/or materials of the product itself and/or its ornamentation". Come on 110, I know you have it in you, stick it to the man brother!

Apple's products are vastly superior to the competition in the tablet market anyways... as mentioned above, this is probably a good thing for all potential Euro consumers.Â

It wasn't all that common until Apple released it and made a killing on it. In fact it didn't exist at all on tablets. The other thing to keep in mind is that there is always more than meets the eye with these sorts of legal battles. It is easy to just dismiss it as Apple being a tyrant, but when you cut through the old crap cake, it is one company defending what they believe to be their own intellectual property, perfected through their own research and development (Apple's R&D budget is, substantial). It goes without saying that Apple's unbelievable success is the reason people are reacting so strongly to this news. It's like everyone admitting that Apple is so good it's unfair to everyone else, so they should cut Samsung and Motorola a break. Maybe we should put more pressure on those companies to introduce a new kind of product that changes the technological culture around us. What about that?[QUOTE="The_Game21x"]Apple's new way of "competing" in a nutshell.

To someone who isn't drinking Apple's Kool-Aid, other tablets can be just as good, if not better than the iPad. I'm not going to deny that Apple has the better hardware in many respects (but not all) and a better native app catalog but the majority of people who go for an Android tablet over the iPad will not be pining for Apple's tablet.

Get used to that. Saying anything positive about Apple will earn you the Kool-Aid tag, no matter how rational you may actually be. It's the easiest way to dismiss your opinions. If you like Apple products, you can't possibly know what you're talking about. Apple products aren't for real computer people, lol.
In the real world, the iPad is king in every way I can think of. Sure there are cheaper alternatives, but they're not nearly as good, even the expensive non-Apple tablets are not as good, and why people would buy them is truly a mystery to me. Nobody can truly match Apple's engineering and price point -- not the iPad, and not the MacBook Air.
MacBook Air seems more practical for like a linux distribution or something, where user knows you can just load the OS off the usb, unless they added a disk drive eventually. :P
I don't want to seem like more of a hater, so I won't deny that Apple's build quality is top notch, but having one idea be popular and the competition releasing similar things has been the norm for a long as competition has existed. Apple isn't the first to call them out on it, but some do ignore it because it isn't relevant to them, I know a couple of people who do find the iPad too limiting but were interested in a Galaxy Tab.Â
I will say that yestarday I was operating on about 3 hours of sleep after working about 12 hours the previous day on a graduation project, and I was working on it again while posting, so excessively stupid posting may be in part to that. Functionality wise, I would not really be using windows if linux disros had proper game support and drivers for GPUs and such. Same reason android is more attractive to me.Â

By Google's count, only 0.9% of activated in-use devices are tablets. Multiply that by the 135 million total Android "devices" that Larry Page announced last week during Google's quarterly analyst call, and you get 1.21 million tablets. Compare that to the 28.73 million iPads Apple sold through the end of June. The Android tablet experience is deficient in so many ways, it will take more than just hardware to save it. The question still begs the answer, why buy one of these instead of an iPad?why buy one of these instead of an iPad?Heil68

I guess this is what happenes when you read posts after drinking the apple kool-aid.
Apple products have always had solid hardware, but it isn't like the competition has stuff that will break when you hold it funny. This is true for PCs too, but I won't give up 95% of my games for better hardware.
He also said better NATIVE app support, the stuff that comes with it. Android is more about community made apps. The iPad is better out of the box, android tablets have the potential to be much better with a bit of time. A dedicated development community can mean the world.Â

Not really.Â
I acknowledge that there are some things that Apple's iPad legitimately does better than other tablets (battery life, stability, ease of use) and I also acknowledge that Apple's hardware is virtually second to none but that does not equal "vastly superior".
Personally, I would buy a $400 ASUS Transformer before I spent $500on the lowest end iPad. I like having removable storage (16GB Transformer + 16GB SD card = $423, give or take). I like being able to customize the UI as I see fit. I like feeling like I have control over the inner workings of my tablet. Even jailbroken, the iPad does not allow for the same deep levels of customization Android does. That's just how iOS works. Some folks may like being kept "safe and secure" by Apple's draconian App Store policies and closed ecosystem. I, for one, like being able to tinker with the OS. Quite frankly, I'll sacrifice having an assload of apps that I know I'm not going to use for a smaller number of apps that I'm not going to use. Most of the apps and games that I would be using on iOS are available natively on Honeycomb and the few that aren't will be shortly.
If you prefer Apple's products, by all means. Keep using them and keep being happy with them. I'm not here to change anyone's minds but saying the iPad is "vastly superior"is a silly blanket statement that, I'm sorry, makes you look like an Apple fanboy. Am I saying Android is better? No. I'm saying it's more than good enough for me. Even before I decided to get an Android tablet (yes I have one), I've wondered what it is about Android that Apple faithfuls tend to hate. I've asked many people who outright bash Android why it sucks (including a certain someone in this very thread) and the most I've been able to get out of any of them is little more than "Umm...because it sucks".
I still swear by my iPod Touch as the be-all end-all portable media device but I've opened my eyes (and my mind) to the fact that plenty of perfectly good alternatives exist in the tablet space as well.Â
