[QUOTE="Lindsosaurus"][QUOTE="nintendo-4life"] I'm talking about the people who made black people ACCEPTED by the entire community (and probably the world if there was any racism there). Black politicians gave the blacks their rights. They did not change the perception of them to the other communities. I'm talking about people like oprah, tiger woods, etc.nintendo-4life
I would venture to say that MLK helped change perceptions. MJ isn't the 1st global Black celebrity, I understand that he HELPED the process, but he didnt do it on his own and I think the bigger issue is just that his later years were filled with so much controversy and he really wasn't viewed favorably...
i'm talking about him as a whole. not his later years or his early ones (his memorial became the most watched event in history so...) MLK, as i said, gave blacks their rights. He didn't exactly change the perception of black people. Other wise his life wouldn't have ended that way. And as far as i'm concerned MJ was the first black ( hell even american) artist to become insanely popular in china and the far east as a whole. BUT, if you agree that he at the very least helped on the process. I'll take that, "helping" the process is enough for MJ to be a "black" icon.MLK absolutely did change some people's perceptions, there were plenty of White people who changed their views after watching his speeches and seeing his peaceful approach, but of course he didnt change everyone's and MJ didn't change everyone's either as racism still exists...
Because I am a White chick I don't feel as though I am one to say if he is a Black icon or not (as were my sentiments about O'Reilly in an earlier post) No one can deny the things that he did and his part in Black history so if Black people want to embrace him as a Black Icon that's fine. I think the controversy about it comes in because people are simultaneously overemphasising his impact at the expense of other's who are more deserving and disregarding the negative parts of his life, (and if you are "talking about him as a whole" you can't disregard his later years)
