In Dutch, we distinguish between 'joods' (jewish - relating to the culture and religion), and Joods (Jewish - relating to the ethnicity). The term ethnicity is still dubious here, though, as apparently you only need to have a Jewish mother to be considered ethnically Jewish. This is why, technically, you can have both white and black people that are ethnically Jewish. So even though it is definitely also an ethnic term, it isn't quite on the same level as terms such as 'Caucasian' and 'Arab'.

DraugenCP

It is through the mother according to Orthodox and other more conservative branches of Jews. Other Jews it is through either parent. It is not as cut and dry since we do not agree on everything.

And Arabs are considered Caucasian.

emphasis on the "we do not agree on anything". there is an old saying , 2 Jews , 5 opinions.

Why even call it a Jewish state though? Why not call it a hebrew state, since that's the ethnic part of the Jewish world. If a Chinese man converts to Judaism, should he have quick access to moving to Israel? I dont think so, that dpesnt make much sense. I dont understand why the term "jew" is even used with regards to Israel, it should be the term Hebrew imo. The Hebrew people, culture, etc.

It'll also help alleviate confusion when talk about what a jewish person is.

BossPerson

Hebrew is the ethnic group and language of the Jewish people. However the term Jew is used interchangaebly and IMO it fits better. A Chinese man who converts to Judaism is now a member of the tribe, he is seen as a fellow descendent of Abraham and Issac, he would be Jewish just as much as one who was born Jewish.

The Chinese man will never be Hebrew in his ethnicity, but the can become Hebrew in his culture. This is why Jew fits better.

"A Chinese man who converts to Judaism is now a member of the tribe, he is seen as a fellow descendent of Abraham and Issac, he would be Jewish just as much as one who was born Jewish" Well that's just plain dumb. Don't most israelis say that Israel is a Jewish state in the sense of ethnicity? Not in the sense of religion. By your scenario of the chinese man, Israel is a state about religion far more than ethnicity.

Jews are a non-exclusive ethnicity. Ethnicity=/=race.

I am not Canadian, but from my perspective Harper looks like he is doing a good job. You can't be neutral all the time, the people who choose to sit on the middle of the fence all the time will get impaled by it sooner or later.

Iran is not a good ally, Canada should have had the balls to sever all ties with them earlier. You guys need a better military, it is a joke to say the least. Diplomacy only get's you so far. Not that I'm dissing Canada, there are several aspects of it I like, I like the Canadian health care for example.

But your policy of "let's be neutral and friends with everyone" will not get anyone very far. But this is GS where the hardcore left loonies congregate like moths to a flame, so they are against anything that isn't 100% politically correct and think that backward dictator ran countries like Iran should be allowed to own nukes and be welcomed by the civilised western world.

religion and ethnicity were always tied here though, and it was applied to other people too. thats why for the longest time, Jews refered to Muslims as Ishmaelites, even if they were Turkish or Berber , simply because Islam was seen as the religion of the Arabs, ie, the Ishmaelites. though I think Persians were not usually included because of the extensive history the Jews had with Persians , which pre-dates Islam or their relations with Arabs.

Race does not really exist, it is a misused term. Scientifically all humans are of one race. In general sense race is a broad term and ethnicity is more narrow.

According to wikipedia Jews are an ethno religious group. Meaning both are intertwined (I know wikipedia has issues)

Jews - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to the dictionary (and there are different dictionaries) they all say the same thing generally, just slight variations.

Here is the online definition: A member of the people and cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who trace their origins through the ancient Hebrew people of Israel to Abraham

Both religion and ethnicity. Here is the princeton definition: A person belonging to the worldwide group claiming descent from Jacob (or converted to it) and connected by cultural or religious ties

wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
Here is the Merriam Webster dictionary definition:1
a: a member of the tribe of Judah b:israelite2: a member of a nation existing in Palestine from the sixth century b.c. to the first century a.d.3: a person belonging to a continuation through descent or conversion of the ancient Jewish people 4: one whose religion is Judaism
It is both once again. There is also Jewish DNA and diseases that only Jews are more prone to. This is similar to other ethnic groups, ethnic groups share similar DNA Haplogroups and diseases and traits.

Family Tree DNA - Discover Your Jewish Ancestry

Jewish Genetic Diseases

It is both. I suppose it would be more accurate to use the term Hebrew for ethnicity and Jew for religion, much like how Arab is ethnicity and Islam is religion. But Jew is used interchangabely so it works.

You cant invite people into your ethnicity. Again, if Israel considered itself a Hebrew state, we'd all have a simpler time defining the situation.

Yes you can. Anyway it isn't just about religion. If a Jew convert from Judaism by Judaism he is still considered a Jew. But he is not longer eligible for Israeli citizenship.

you could think of it more like a tribe. the easiest way to be part of a tribe is to be born into it, but you could also marry into it (ie convert)

...wait, Jews (Hebrews) who are atheist or convert to another religion are not eligible for citizenship in Israel?

They can be atheist of course or have any belief really. But if they formally convert to another religion they are not.

Im not quite sure he is right on that one, given the fact that some of the people who emigrated from the USSR were Christians and were still granted citizenships.

[QUOTE="Darkman2007"][QUOTE="Rockman999"]I don't get why it is so important for us(non Zionist jews) to "protect" Isreal. What have they done for us and what will we gain from helping them?ShadowMoses900

no one asked for your help , just don't come running to the Jewish state if the non Jews in your particular country decide to kill you. and no , I do not care how liberal the place where you live is, 100 years ago , Germany was one of the most liberal and tolerant places for Jews, so you can never predict the future.

I hear there is a lot of anti-semitism in many European countries still. There are growing number of attacks on Jewish people, and these are very liberal countries.

What in the world would Zionists do without anti-Semitism?

Anti-semitism has been "on the rise" only because the bar for anti-Semitic behaviour has been lowered to the point where ANY CRITICISM of Israel is now automatically considered "anti-Semitic".

California passes resolution defining criticism of Israel as anti-Semitism

[QUOTE="DraugenCP"]

ShadowMoses900

It is through the mother according to Orthodox and other more conservative branches of Jews. Other Jews it is through either parent. It is not as cut and dry since we do not agree on everything.

And Arabs are considered Caucasian.

Depends on which definition you employ. Racial, ethnic and national terminology is extremely ambiguous and imprecise. I could distinguish further between Germanic and Semitic peoples, but even those terminologies would be dubious, seeing as Germans, Slavs and Celts have intermingled in Europe to the point where in some countries it is impossible to speak of a clear ethnic root. Germany is a great example of this.

I'm not Orthodox I'm half Jewish, but for the most part it is because they eat very rich, full flavored foods. Like the Persians. They can stink almost just like that too.

This is turning into kind of a weird discussion, but I do know that a lot of older generation muslim immigrants from Turkey and Morocco here do not use deodorant and tend to eat foods that contain a lot of garlic or other ingredients that generate strong odour. Combine these two elements and the result is not nice for your nose.

Trust me, go to Beverly Hills which is CRAWLING with Persians and if you talk to some you'll get that same weird smell. I've had many a Jewish dinners and I know the smell comes from the food. But yeah, this is a weird convo lol.
