[QUOTE="battlefront23" Still, it's an act of violence (if only very minor :P) or an act of immaturity. I think Obama will be just fine after that comment.

Yeah but a President show off his bad*** reflexes is vastly better than a respected policymaker being a baby.

[QUOTE="its_me_"]

There were people like you, on the other side, saying the exact same thing during Bush's presidency. And yet, most of the people on these forums thought he didn't deserve respect. There is now opposition who believes Obama does not deserve any respect. It's called opposition, and it's the foundation of a republic like ours, so deal with it. A lie is a lie. It doesn't matter who tells it, and it doesn't matter who points it out. Need I remind you, we pay Obama's salary. The president works for me. He works for you. He works for the American people, period. We do not work for him. I don't necessarily think Obama is a liar, but if I do think he is twisting the truth, I will not show deference by giving him a pass. Republicans all around the country have been targeted during speeches in the same way, by Democrats. I have no sympathy for your argument, and I'm not even a Republican.

its_me_

I didn't think that blatant displays of disrespect towards Bush were warranted, either. I consistently refuse to use epithets like "Killary", "Shrub", "N0bama", and "McSame" because I maintain that no matter how much I might disagree with someone, they are still a human being, not just a collection of political positions to oppose. That others have done similar actions does not make it right to do the same now.

I didn't justify or condone what that South Carolina senator did. I pointed out a rampant hypocritical tendency that Obama supporters often display.

The only problem with your theory is that I, unlike most Obama supporters, believe everyone should exercise the right to opinion, even if it's against my own. That means if someone wants to display a "Nobama" sticker, they damn well should. The problem I have with this situation is the people of South Carolina elected what they thought was a responsible leader, and he demotes to a shouting match on the floor of the Senate during a nationally televised event. Is it right to criticize? Absolutely. Do you need a little respect when doing it? Absolutely.

At least you acknowledge that you think this behavior is appropriate.

You do realize the United States is a Democratic Republic yes? Do me a favor and call the President and make it like you are his boss and tell him what to do. Let me know how that works for you.

actually if you take the time to read the rest of the thread I said this instance is innappropriate...and yes it's a republic..but if you think that means we aren't the boss you have no idea what a republic is supposed to be....

Was Bush able to solely plunge the US into war? No. Was his administration responsible for it's preparation, push through congress, and execution? Yes.

Bush was captain of the ship. All failures fall on him. Funny how that works.

Congressmen should be professional and courteous.

Also, the shoe throwing is a piss poor comparison. The shoe was thrown by an Iraqi citizen iirc. Second, Bush was speaking in a foreign land.

Obama, on the other hand, was speaking in front of his peers in his own damn country.

Absolutely dispicable and rude behavior. I cannot even begin to explain how innapropiate shouting the word "liar" to the President of the United States during a joint speech to Congress is. He's already released an "apology" statement. This is getting out of hand. When are people, espcially those we elect to represent our states, going to start showing respect to the President?

Clip (Towards the end)

It was Joe Wilson from South Carolina by the way.

Funny. Bush starts a war with no conscience to blow up brown people. No one ever had the audacity to stand up during a joint speech and yell "Liar!" or "Murderer!" That would be disrespectful.

Obama wants to overhaul healthcare to help millions of people in this country and yet you have a Republican fool who disrespects the President like a child.

A-MAZING!

A. Bush did not coerce Congress into declaring war. Congress, including almost every Democrat, did that voluntarily.

B. What evidence do you have that Bush is a racist? His Secretary of State was Black. His Attorney General was Hispanic. He campaigned for minority representatives, Democratic and Republican, all over Texas when he was governor.

C. You're making the assumption that Bush necessarily wanted to cause harm, and Obama necessarily wants to help people. You have no facts or specifics about the bill, at all.

I don't think it's because he's black at all. I think it's because his name is Barack Hussein Obama, his step-father was a muslim, and he lived in Indonesia. Xenophobia towards Muslims/middle easterners is a real problem in the US, due to 9/11 and terrorism. Religious fanaticism and terrorism are scary things, but they're vague. Instead of differentiating between who actually is our enemy, and who isn't, it's easier for the (ignorant) Americans to just characterize all Muslims as terrorists, and all middle easterner as Muslims. I don't think I'll ever forget the look on a Muslim guy I know's face when his friend of years and years went on a tirade about how "America was at war with Muslims" and that "Obama is a Muslim and therefore shouldn't be president".

I doubt we can get anything as good from the Obama "Liar!" footage. But in a seriousness, it was unprofessional for the congressman to yell something like that out, just like it was unprofessional for that reporter to throw his shoes at Bush.

I thought it was a pretty raccous speech overall considering almost everyone in attendance was a politician. Even with Bush I remember silence and a refusal to applaud, but I've never before seen an address to congress with such jeering. I also thought it was pretty funny how just about every Republican gave a standing ovation to malpractice reform but didn't do so for even the issues which were thought to be bi-partisan and not championed by any specific party. And then there was the dunce who gave the Republican reply. Obama comes out in support of ideas like malpractice reform and interstate insurance markets and the first words out of this guy's mouth are, "The President said he doesn't support malpractice reform and interstate insurance markets." Way to show that you're paying attention to this whole debate.

Actually there were weapons of mass destruction. There were 3 megaton nuclear bombs, and I saw them with my own eyes when I was deployed to Iraq with an ST unit in 2005. Unfortunately, only 4 and 5 megaton nuclear bombs count technically as 'weapons of mass destruction.' So, rather than reporting what I've just told you, MSNBC, NBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, and the rest of the anti-conservative news outlets reported that we found none, and then called Bush a liar. They obviously succeeded in convincing a lot of people.

I don't think I'll ever forget the look on a Muslim guy I know's face when his friend of years and years went on a tirade about how "America was at war with Muslims" and that "Obama is a Muslim and therefore shouldn't be president".

Sorry, you're wrong. The outcry against his policies has NOTHING to do with his race or his father. Maybe that was not clear for you. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS HERITAGE. If there is one thing I can not stand about America it is that everything is turned into a racial war the second someone gets the chance. Seriously, lets stop this crap.

Both Democrats and Republicans voted to go to Iraq. It wasn't an unpopular idea until we realized there were no weapons of mass destruction (and really I am sure there were democratic congressmen who were just as rude to Bush, it just wasnt televised)....Obama's healthcare plan is an extremely polarizing idea. This has nothing to do with race. You have to realize how controversial this plan really is.

Im not gonna lie to you. I have not read anything on it yet (I like to tell the truth). But I was talking about the behavior both inside and out of Congress. Comparing Obama to the AntiChrist, Parents taking their kids out of school to dodge a get back to school speech, Calling him a socialist. The list goes on....

The antichrist thing is ridiculous. The other two are perfectly legitimate. I'm not sure you grasp the concept of "liberty."

[QUOTE="mfacek"]When you're the captain of the ship, and you have navigators, naval experts, other captains, etc. all yelling "DON'T GO LEFT", and you decided to take your ship and head left, I would certainly say it's his fault. Now, is it all Bush's fault? Of course not. However, we can't just forget that his administration was responsible for the war's planning and execution, both of which were disasters.Theokhoth

Except, in our government system, if the navigators, naval experts, other captains, etc. are all yelling "DON'T GO LEFT!" the captain actually can't go left. It's not a system where the President makes everybody's decisions. It's a joint effort.

When you're the minority in government, there really is nothing you can do but watch the ignorant captain go left, and take the whole ship down with him.

They obviously succeeded in convincing a lot of people.

its_me_

To be fair, you can add fox news to that list, because that's where I heard it from. Regardless, my point still stands. It was a bipartisan decision and the controversy didn't come until after it was reported that they didn't "technically" have weapons of mass destruction.

Anyways, on a side note, thank you for your service to our country. :)

Somebody throws a shoe at Bush; GS users than make a gif of it.

Somebody yells liar to Obama; GS users get offended.

I see a pattern here.

Even if he was a Congressman, it was just a comment.

battlefront23

The person throwing the shoe was neither an American, on American soil, and certainlynot an elected government official.

I'm not sure you grasp the concept of socialism, if you think Obama's a socialist.

I know firsthand that when we first went to Iraq there was probably just as much civilian outrage against the decision then as there is against a public option now, only the Iraq protestors weren't thrust into the spotlight by news corporations like the health care ones have been. Also, there was a LOT of outrage directed towards Bush not about the decision to go to war but how to pay for it. Politicians on both sides of the aisle spoke out about the cost, but again I don't remember any of them heckling him about it during a session of congress.

As for being rude, like I said I have never before seen a President get this kind of reception from congress duringa public address. Dems may have hated Bush, but at least we were civil about it.

Controversial is a funny term. It's very subjective and right now you're basically using it to fit your own definitions of certain events. Is health care any more controversial than going to war? No, in fact I think a pretty strong argument can be made that the latter is a more radical decision.

Liberty is limited. There is no such thing as absolute liberty. Therefore I see no difference

This was a global televised event. Have you guys thought about the possible ramifications of this speech / healthcare drama (not just the liar part, but the booos and ooohs and ahhhs)? Beijing, Tokyo, and Moscow for example could start losing even more confidence in our gov and the USD if our leaders and people appear to be divided and confused with itself. This gradual build up of disbelief towards the U.S. could start having seriously negative political, economic and militaristic consequences. Btw, if I was Pudin or Medvedev I would have lol'd a little bit. It would have been like:"Oh, you silly Americans make me:lol: sometimes......" :P

Yes, Fox effed that one up as well. Although, they did allow people on to argue both sides, which the others specifically did not. And, you're welcome.

Funny, not a single journalist, UN inspector, high ranking official, etc. ever said nuclear weapons were ever found. Even members of the Bush cabinet admitted the intelligence was faulty, including Colin Powell. But yeah, must be a massive conspiracy against the right wing. Sometimes I forget how rational you right wingers are.
