First off, his heart is in the right place.
Second, he does not need to lose his job. Youre just being a grouch, plain and simple.
Third, if he bugs you, just yell at him. Scold him. Whatever, just say something, but dont ruin a guy's career because for being helpful albeit ignorant at the same time.
"I enjoy smoking, and while you obviously do not, I expect you to not give me crap for doing so"
"SHUT THE HELL UP YOU STUPID HIPPIE!"
"Whatever, man, I like to smoke"
Best response, however, is to simply walk away. Maybe if the manager is there tell him you dont appreciate being told to not smoke, and that his manager problably would be pissed about losing 25+ dollars a week in tobacco sales.
But firing him = overreaction lol
To be honest, it seems like you are at fault here. Yes, if he is annoying you he should stop, but how will he know that he is annoying you when you refuse to tell him?
You aren't giving this guy a chance to fix his problem. Just ask him politely to stop with the remarks and if he still continues, then take it to the manager. This guy could just be trying to be friendly or joke with you in his own way. There is no reason to get him in trouble based on your assumption. For all you know, simply asking him to stop could end this whole situation. The way you are acting is very telling, it is very obvious that you are angry and the fact that you want to jump to such drastic measures as wanting to get the guy fired shows that you are responding irrationally.
You keep going on and on about your rights as a customer, but the problem is your assumption that he knows he is doing wrong. Sorry, buddy, as I said it's you who is in the wrong. Approaching the guy directly is your best bet, since you have no idea if the manager will even say anything to the guy...which will just cause the problem to continue.

youre exactly right, yet I cant help but feel Geezer is the kind of person that would circumvent the issue, find a solution that takes more time, is unfairly cruel to the offending party, and is not necessary...simply to avoid direct conflict.
Like my neighbor in the dorms. He was a hardcore conservative and christian and, as a result, did not approve of me and my roommate drinking. So instead of saying "Dude, please dont drink in the dorms", to which I would have complied, he went to the RA, filed a complaint, and a couple days later I got in trouble and almost kicked out (I had to talk a lot and do some stuff around the dorm).
Cant stand people like that.
Perhaps his father died of a smoking related disease and he is trying to pass on a message about smoking in his own socially inept manner?kruesader
And he took up a job at the gas station to cut smoking off at it source. Do you really want this hero to be fired?
question is, why don't you tell him not to worry about what you do?
i think getting him fired is a little harsh
I've had people say stuff to me too. It's not like it says its bad for me on the damn package. **** do they want my business or not? Cause Im sure whoever owns the place wants my money.
Tell the guy off. If he does it again, say something to the manager. It's harassment. If he keeps giving you crap about what you choose to do with your life then quit going there.
don't bother with people like him, he is just trying to look out for you
but if you really do want him fired, the manager seems close enough with you that you can just tell him straight up he's saying stupid things to you and could be saying it to other customers too
You have nothing better to do with your time than to scheme and concoct ways to get a convenience store clerk fired?? There are other convenience stores. A polite yet assertive letter to management is sufficient. I have ample opportunity to chastise and berate managers in order to get employees who 'did me wrong' terminated. But it doesn't make me a better person and is, more or less, a form of bullying. So anyway, there's this one convenience store that I go to a lot, because it's open 24 hours and I pass it on my way back home from work. But there's this new guy who works there who's a total ass. I go in there to buy cigarettes and he's like "you should stop smoking so much, you'll get cancer."
Yeah, whatever. As if I take any of my advice from a damn gas station cashier.
Anyway, yesterday I went there and bought a pack of cigarettes and he said "Good boy! Down to one pack a day!" And that's when I decided that he needs to lose his job.
So...I'm probably going to complain to management. Can't do that yet though, since I don't know his name and he doesn't wear a nametag. I went there tonight with the intention of asking him what his name was, but he wasn't working tonight. Anyway, I plan on doing that. The only problem is that gas station cashiers only get fired out of extreme incompetence. The last manager who worked there used to always give me free stuff, used to brag to me about the girls he had sex with in the restroom during business hours, and he once told me about how he brought in his X-Box, unhooked the security equipment from the TV so that he could play Halo in the back room while customers were waiting around lined up at the cash register with no one to serve them. And he WAS the manager, and he was there for at least a good 9 months.
So that's a problem. I could complain, but I guarantee that that won't be enough to get this guy fired, if the movie Clerks is even slightly realistic. So how CAN I get him fired (without doing anything illegal)? Because damnit, he DOES need to lose his job.
MrGeezer
You're right Mr.Geezer, this guy deserves to be fired, lose his house, and slowly to starve to death on the side of the road!!!TSNAKE617
Sorry, but I don't believe in free handouts. He's not entitled to a job, and it's really none of my concern as a customer what happns to him after he loses his job. He's not my friend, he's a dude working at a gas station.
So to solve this conundrum we have to find the root of the problem. Yes, it's your smoking. If you hadn't smoked to begin with, you wouldn't have this problem. In other words the only reasonable solution is to quit!
Captain Sithious saving yet another lost forum member!

I don't believe in free handouts either, but, at the same time, I don't believe in free kickdowns.[QUOTE="TSNAKE617"]You're right Mr.Geezer, this guy deserves to be fired, lose his house, and slowly to starve to death on the side of the road!!!MrGeezer

No, but he is a fellow human being. Just put yourself in his shoes, ok? He is likely working this crapjob because he has to, and like I said earlier...he is trying to help, and his heart is in the right place.
Quit feeling like you have this sense of entitlement to wrong everyone that has wronged you.
Grow some balls, and the next time he tells you to stop smoking, tell him to stfu/mind his own business/go to hell/etc
Do not be a coward, go behind his back, and get him fired.
Jesus H. Christ how old are you?
So basically, the guy tells you that smoking is bad for you and you´re gonna get him fired without even pausing to at least think that his job may be very important to him
Wow dude, just wow.
Getting him fired is going a bit overboard in my opinion, there is a big possibility that he's a slightly dumb but overall good guy.
You should just say something. Even telling him that "you don't come to the store for the small-talk" should allow him to think twice before mentioning it again the next time. It might create some friction in future "meetings" but it doesn't sound like you're interested in becoming friends with this guy anyway.
It's your decision to pick a time to quit and strangers don't have any right to voice their opinions about it, you should help him realize that, for your sake and for the sake of other customers.

Sorry, but he's in the business of selling cigarettes. It's not his job to insult customers for buying a product that he sells. If he REALLY has that much of a problem with people smoking, then he's really in the wrong business.
This whole 'gotta get him fired' is very vengeful and destructive. All you have to do is look him in the eye and say firmly 'I would appreciate it if you wouldn't comment on my purchases.' THAT'S IT. At least try that before having him fired because he bothers you.
do you currently work with people that you also want fired?
[QUOTE="flazzle"]do you currently work with people that you also want fired?
MrGeezer
Yes.
Ironically, when I made a thread asking how to get a co-worker fired simply because I just plain don't like him, I don't recall ANYONE defending the guy.
what...the hell...is wrong with you? Are you roleplaying as a self-hating old man, or are you actually like this in real life?

Well I wasn't actually going to do it (as seen by the fact that I HAVEN'T tried to get him fired). I was just asking for ideas on how I COULD get him fired.

somehow I knew that... Have you ever considered the fact you may be projecting some personal issues you are having onto the people around you?To the people who are telling Geezer to be more understanding: shut the **** up.
He was offended, and he wants the guy fired. Is that so hard to understand? He's not projecting. He's not compensating for his burnt-out lungs. He just wants that jackass fired. And do you guys know why? Because he's a ****ing human being (and apparently, you guys aren't), and it's survival of the fittest. That guy isn't fit to survive at his workplace, and that's his fault, not anybody else's.
On another note, you probably shouldn't get him fired. You might not realize it, but those indignant, self-righteous types are the best around.

Some people are evil, that's just how the world is. Although we can't label the TC as evil based on the small amount of information currently provided.
