Maybe you should just stop smoking? Because you CAN get cancer. The guy's just telling you that you should stop. He shouldnt be fired for telling you to be healthier.

The guy SELLS cigarettes. It's none of his business if I smoke enough, and if he can't shut the hell up and stop making patronising comments then he shouldn't work there.
This is just like if you went to a videogame store and one of the employees was contantly bothering you over your taste in games. You don't pay money to have him freaking criticize your tastes in games every time you go there. He's there to sell you the damn game. And if he can't do that without insulting his customers, then he shouldn't work there.
Well then just talk to him, but making him lose his job is way too much. If he still does it well then just talk to his manager. The guy SELLS cigarettes. It's none of his business if I smoke enough, and if he can't shut the hell up and stop making patronising products then he shouldn't work there.

[QUOTE="warbmxjohn"][QUOTE="Trelaf_TheWise"]Cause you can't win that debate. Ive never met any adult that smoked and didnt wish they never started. Name one benefit of cigs besides personally appeasing a physical addiction?Jesus Christ, you're a shining example of the people I talked about in my post. I'm sick and tired of this, I'm not even going to bother debating anything with you...
Trelaf_TheWise
THE DEBATE WAS NEVER ABOUT CIGS BEING GOOD OR BAD!! Never was, never will be, everyone knows they're bad for you. MY point is that people like you have to stop being so self righteous and stop judging people for their life choices. Read your own RIDICULOUS post again: "I respect a persons right to do what they want in THEIR lives, but don't try and pretend smoking is beneficial in any way, shape, or form"....who mentioned any of that? Try pulling your head out of there and analyse this with me: you say you respect what people are doing in THEIR lives, isn't that what the TC is doing? Minding his own business buying cigarettes? Is it too much to ask for to NOT be patronized with phrases like "GOOD BOY!!" by a store clerk when all you're doing is purchasing a product?
Meh.. I guess this proves the point to not try and joke with a smoker about their smokes, theres not much like a nicotine hissyfit. Talk about being uptight.Maybe you should just stop smoking? Because you CAN get cancer. The guys just telling you that you should stop. He shouldnt be fired for telling you to be healthier.
Uh...yeah he should, when his freaking JOB is selling cigarettes.
so really why do you need a 24 hour gas station just for cig? really... if you going to store around 11pm-3am you really should cut back...[QUOTE="DooDooPeePee"]Maybe you should just stop smoking? Well im sure when he was a little kid growing up, he didnt say "i wanna have a job selling cigarettes!" This is just where he works right now, and if he wants to tell his costumers that what hes selling CAUSES CANCER, than i think he has a right to.

Well it's kind of hard to know that you need to stop doing something if, you know, no one tells you there's a problem.
Again, I'm hoping that his boss will tell him after I file a complaint.

I don't CARE if he was planning on working at a gas station. I don't care if the waitress at Denny's was planning on selling coffee to drunk people for the rest of her life. That IS her job, and if she can't do it without insulting her customers then she DOES deserve to be fired. Sure, he has a right to say whatever he wants. But free speech doesn't apply to the workplace, and I have the right to get him fired if he continues to insult me.

See this is exactly what I mean, this thread is a total joke because of people like you. Only a smoker, ONLYYY a smoker could get this much flack for being pissed off because a jackass store clerk insulted him with patronising one-liners. ONLY a smoker because in the case of what other product would it be totally off limits to get angry at someone who referred to you as a "GOOD BOY" for buying it?
what a joke. What's the point of continuing? smoking is the worst thing you could do in here after paedophilia so how the hell do you expect to get anyone on your side

Your impression is that his intention was to insult you. That comes not from the text of what he said, but from your interpretation of what he meant by it. There was no name-calling or blatant insulting of any kind.
No offense, but I find it very strange that you come here and write paragraph after paragraph about what this guy did and yet completely refuse to spend five seconds to talk to the guy. Has the thought never crossed your mind that there are perhaps more important things in life to concern yourself with? That one single sentence from a guy at a store seems to have ruined your entire week makes it seem quite strongly that your biggest problem is not this guy trying to get you to quit smoking.

You are being petty and irrational.
That is not an insult or a patronizing statement. It is the truth, and it has been pointed out to you. You are trying to get a man to lose his job, which he needs for money, over a sentencedyou construed as offensive. Not only is that frivolous, it is immoral. It is extremely difficult to find and keep a job in this failing economy without somebody making a silly fuss over something as petty and meaningless as this.
If you do not like his comments, state so. You can even be angry about it. Tell him to **** off, that the opinion of a gas station clerk is meaningless to you, etc. But going after the man's job is an overreaction. The guy could go to school, have a family, a crappy landlord, or some other circumstance where he needs the money he earns at that job, and getting him fired can only hope to make his life miserable.
And no, I am not saying this because you're a smoker. I'm saying this because you are the one complaining when you frankly are in no position whatsoever to be calling for the guy's unemployment. The comments in here about smokers being singled out are laughable.
Finally, smoking is bad for your health, and it is in your best interest to quit.

You keep talking about "obligations". I have already addressed that point. There are no obligations in life. You can be as big a jerk as you want to as many people as you want and there will be nothing stopping you from doing that other than other people's reactions and your own conscience. The only question is what you want out of life.
Look, really? Answer honestly: on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being "suicidal" and 10 being "at complete piece with the world", how much do you enjoy life? The fact that a single comment from a guy you don't know has made you this angry is a very good indication that all is not exactly well. You seem to be acting as if you're the only person in the world who has ever received a comment that rubbed them the wrong way. That's not exactly the case; I've run into comments that rubbed me the wrong way in life many times. The difference is that I just shrugged them off and paid them little attention, because I don't stew for days on end about the meaning behind a comment from some total stranger.
I went through a training session when I started my current job, and one of the topics was human relations. They offered a very simple tip for people, which came in the form of a three-letter abbreviation: ABI - Assume Best Interpretation. Whenever something happens, there are always multiple ways to interpret it, and the one that is best for human relations is always to assume that the person means no ill will or insult of any kind. Only once you have determined for certain that that is not the case should you take any retaliatory measures.
I'm going to spell this out nicely to the TC.

Sorry, I don't think that that logic flies. If he's being offensive enough for me to have to tell him to "**** off", then HE is the one at wrong. If the comments are worth me cussing the dude out, then they're worth filing a complaint. I don't just go around randomly cussing people out, do you? If I find myself cussing out a cashier, then HE said something that he shouldn't have, and that absolutely warrants filing a complaint. It's not my job to be insulted just so that someone has a job. He works a customer service job, and all I want is to be able to shop there without some dirtbag constantly giving me an attitude. My business is helping to pay that dude's wages, and I (or ANY other customer) doesn't deserve that kind of treatment.
