[QUOTE="UltimateRAGEX"]I send my condolences to the people living in Japan. What annoys me though is that the govt of my country (Britain), wants to send Japan so many millions (or billions) in money to help them recover from the earthquake. We should think of ourselves first, before putting our country in even more debt than it already is. If something really bad like this happened to us in our country, Japan wouldn't give nowt. Guarantee it.

this isnt politics. people are suffering, and its the duty of those capable to help out. us here in the US are going to contribute a long with the rest of the UN. get over it.

This is pretty bad, and I have two friends in Japan at the moment, but according to their posts on Facebook they are ok. As for the rest of Japan, I hope they recover as soon as possible.

Why Japan?.. Why couldn't this happen to one of the crap nations nobody likes?

taterfrickintot

Personally I feel that should not happen to any nation. In all nations, the good people outnumber the bad people, trust me.....so in the end good people suffer more than the nefarious ones in these catatrophic situations.

japan is one of the largest earthquake zones in the world, only surpassed by the san andreas fault line in california.

The one that people are starting to talk about is the New Madrid Fault Zone in the middle of the US. FEMA is already gearing-up big-time for a massive quake that could split the US in 2 and put much of the south-central US under water.

wait, really ?

I'll be just as heartless and say "Better not delay my 3DS!"

Getting that out of the way, what is it with all of these major-assed earthquakes these days. It seems like the last decade or so, it's been pummel after pummel.

I don't know when you grew up, but I'm no youngin, and I certainly grew up in an era when the media not only existed, but loudly proclaimed its existence. And I don't remember earthquakes of this size happening constantly, even with that loudly trumpeting media.

check out this wiki link for the richter scale. A magnitude of 8.9 means the energy of the earthquake is more than 7 times the power of the largest thermonuclear weapon EVER tested.

NHK has been talking about this tsunami all day. Everything that was supposed to be showing is canceled. I guess this is common sense, but not even 1 minute of another headline.

The earthquakes seem to be going counter clockwise on the ring of fire. First it was New Zealand. Now it is Japan. Is California next?

I was at a party when we heard about this. Most of us were pretty drunk as well. Since the NZ earthquake has just happened as well as this one, we decided that the world was coming to an end and partied like crazy.

Earthquakes much like vulcanos are somewhat like clock-work. Go back to 1880 to early 1900 and you had a ton of them. Sooner or later they will happen and they are often creating chain-reactions.

This is a really sad thing to happen but it could also be much much worse.

Some scientists are really worried that an eathquake could trigger a supervolcano like the one in Yellowstone (which is a volcano that are starting to really worry some people without the help from other natural forces). Then civilization would be basically dead for a long long time.

And if a supervolcano would errupt right now the entire world's civilization would end. Not just North America's.

We could easily fall back hundreds of years in technology for a time.

He said "super volcano", not just a volcano. Super volcano eruptions are rather major events and affect the globe. An eruption of the super volcano under Yellowstone would affect much more than the United States -- it would be Earth-shattering.

The volacano itself may not kill people across the pond; However it isn't just a volacano. I seen people say it could kill 2/3 of the population of the US, and Canada would probably get messed up too. But with the dust could it would of put out the whole world will be in trouble and will probably enter into an ice age.

Doesn't sound good, they're now evacuating residents from the area of the other nuclear plant. They are also going to release some gas from the reactor to relieve pressure and hopefully prevent an explosion. Unfortunately, they have no power with which to carry out the vapour release. So pressure continues to build. Radiation is also leaking from the plant. I don't know what the situation is with the latest power plant though.

Wonder how big the waves in Hawaii will be, if they even get any. I remember last year or the one before there was an earthquake and Hawaii was suppose to get hit and they didn't get anything.SaintLeonidas

I'm on Maui, and we had a decent inland swell. Most of downtown Kahalui was closed this morning, but it's back open now. In Kihei (South shore), the beach roads are still closed. Haven't been down there yet though. Yea, I'm kind of glad I'm up at 4,000 ft.

Holy crap, I don't know if I should be worried or if I should tell my dad to sit down and stay calm for a bit. He's really getting worked up by the nuclear powerplants and saying we would have to move out and go somewhere quick to escape possible radiation leaks. And after seeing that the winds come from Japan directly from the North East, he seems panicked.

Also, Japan has declared an emergency regarding some nuclear plants because "Radiation rises to 1,000 times the normal level at one plant after an outage caused by Friday's quake"

Scary **** , hope it gets solved safely.
