Ha ha, did you hear about the old guy running for president who doesn't use a computer? That's the joke in a mean-spirited ad from the Obama campaign. There's only one problem:

McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes.

http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/obama_makes_fun_of_disabled_people/

Isn't it funny how a five minute Google search from the web-savvy Obama campaign would have saved them from this embarrassing error?

As embarressing and wrong as the ad was. It isn't intentionally making fun of disabled people. If that's true about Mccain, it was purely an error, not some spiteful hurtful attack, so don't make it sound like such.

There is a difference from being physically impaired from using a computer, and mentally not knowing how to use one. That Senator McCain is not currently knowledgeable about basic mainstream technologies like computers and email is a relevant point towards his qualifications for the office of which he is seeking. It's like someone not being aware of the significance of the Industrial Revolution twenty years after it happened. Edit: Pointing out this lack of knowledge is also very different from making fun of a physical impairment.

That video looks unpolished. That being said, the video is wrong in the first place to even attack McCain for being too old, although I can see how the Obama campaign wouldn't have known that McCain's war injuries was what kept him from being able to operate a computer.

Wow! What a completely irrelevant post, thanks Squal! Hey, call me next time you have a debate about topics ranging from energy and the economy, to the war in Iraq and the Iranian Nuclear program. I'm sure you won't ever use a vocal filler to gather your thoughts and make a thought out logical point.

Lol, surprising though that the spin on that comment is working on people... of course, it's only really working on those who are already voting McCain, so maybe not so much.

*sigh* No, we are not. Putting Lipstick on a Pig is a commonly used phrase. McCain himself has used it at least three different times in the past, once in reference to one of Hillary Clinton's policy proposals. I doubt McCain was intending to call Hillary Clinton a pig. The lipstick on a pig manufactured scandal is one of the most depressing in a very depressing election season.

Well, here's the part were you embarress yourself.

Actually watch the video bud, he talks at length about how Mccain's and Bush's policies are so similar and yet Mccain calls it change. He then calls this "putting lipstick on a pig." But yea, your right, when I talk about Mccains policies and compare them to Bush's, I usually insult his VP pick for no reason in the middle of the comment as well. Funny how easy it is to take things out of context, just like your original post.

Whether he was referring to McCain or not then, the point right now is that in the context of what he was saying, the lipstick/pig statement wasn't referring to Palin.

They mentioned McCain's disabilities? That's not right. I don't support Republicans, but I think it's unfair for the ad to say McCain's unfit for the job because he's crippled. That crosses the line.

The ad doesn't say that. Here is the ad in question. It says that he isn't up to date with new technology, not that he's unfit to be president because he has a physical impairment.

Actually watch the clip before you comment and make a fool of yourself. They don't mention his disabilities, just that he has mentioned himself in the past that he doesn't know how to use a computer....not that he physically can't.

Here, K_smoove, if I claim I have a clip of dinosaurs eating Jesus while UFO's fire on NYC, would you watch it before you say something like,

"O man, those dinosaurs, thought the asteroids killed them off! They ate jesus, how sacreligious!"

Yea, I thought so.

No. As far as I can tell, the Obama campaign weren't aware that his disabilities played any factor of allowing McCain to use a computer.

Why do people bring this up? What does someone's hobbies and their personal religious beliefs affect how they are going to be in political office? She's even said that she isn't sure how life came to be about.

Not only that, but Palin wouldn't be the first creationist in office.

Again, assumptions. "Lipstick on a pig" is a common phrase and Obama has used the "lipstick on a pig" line multiple times in the past and McCain himself has used it a few times before too.

The "old fish" is probably a common phrase to in some parts and if anything, him saying "it's still gonna stink after eight years" meant he would be refering to the Bush admin. and their policies rather then McCain.

Do people not say idioms anymore or what?

It is a pundett gaffee to prove a point. I find it hard to place my faith in a leader who can't accept proven scientific phenomenon and clings to some false sense of security based on wrong beliefs. This isn't a matter of whether or not she can believe in god, its a matter of whether or not she is objective enough to listen to reason, pay attention to the facts, and act in a dignified manner becoming of a president. If she can't accept something as established as the earth being 4.6 billion years old then she doesn't have a place in the white hosue.

Speaking just for myself here Genetic_Code, but to the extent that a person's religious beliefs would form the basis of their judgment on the issues that I care about I find them relevant, and no more than that. For example, the fact that Sarah Palin was asked about this seems to be completely fair game. An organization that believes that terrorism against Jews is god's punishment for Jews not recognizing Christ as the savior of mankind holds fundraisers in Palin's church. Do you think that might have some impact on perceptions in the Middle East or her policy beliefs? I don't know or not, but I'd sure like to know and consider it fair game to ask. Just like Obama was asked if he shared some of Reverend Wright's more controversial statements.

Actually, you make a good point. I think of religion as too much of a blanket to be used to not consider the facts and the same could be said about her war monger beliefs which she pointed out in the Gibson interview is derived from God. But one thing I liked about what she said in the interview is how she didn't want God to be on the U.S.'s side, but for the U.S. to be on God's side.

Although I still think a level of education in evolution is necessary for politics.

Edit: Pointing out this lack of knowledge is also very different from making fun of a physical impairment.nocoolnamejim

Sorry have to disagree on the importance of a President not being a computer expert. Also do we really know how much or little he knows about computers? Even if he didn't he has people that can handle this for him. Foreign policy, Economy, etc seems a little more important than being able to maintain a facebook page , agree?

I don't see how you can think that's a bad thing... At least he doesn't sound like he's reading from notecards like Palin and McCain do. Did you watch the interview with Palin by Charles Gibson? She spouted out every response perfectly like she had been rehearsing them for days. At least it seems like Obama is thinking about what he's going to say.

[QUOTE="nocoolnamejim"]There is a difference from being physically impaired from using a computer, and mentally not knowing how to use one. That Senator McCain is not currently knowledgeable about basic mainstream technologies like computers and email is a relevant point towards his qualifications for the office of which he is seeking. It's like someone not being aware of the significance of the Industrial Revolution twenty years after it happened. Edit: Pointing out this lack of knowledge is also very different from making fun of a physical impairment.Erik_Lensherr

Sorry have to disagree on the importance of a President not being a computer expert. Also do we really know how much or little he knows about computers? Even if he didn't he has people that can handle this for him. Foreign policy, Economy, etc seems a little more important than being able to maintain a facebook page , agree?

It isn't about facebook pages. It's about understanding the mentality of the age we live in. Massive technology changes impact everything from how we process information to our frames of reference. McCain has stated he is "aware of the Internet" and is "learning to get on himself" but that he still doesn't know how to use email and just has his staff print them off for him. While I agree with you in general this isn't the BIGGEST issue out there, I'd certainly like our next president to be a little more up to date with technological advances than McCain seems to be.

Perhaps because she wants it taught in schools?

SaugaGames

I insist that creationism is the greatest flaw of religion and complete bunk, yet it is not the biggest problem with public schools.

Listen to this man, he has 25k posts. When he speaks all shall stop and listen, and take what he says as absolute truth. This is the will of Vandalvideo. His will, is law.

mfacek

Quantity =/= quality

Just like Obama was asked if he shared some of Reverend Wright's more controversial statements.nocoolnamejim

Fair assertion. I don't like Obama's links to Wright and I don't like what I know so far about Jews for Jesus.

And you don't need to apologize for disagreeing with me! So long as you have a valid argument and present your reasons for disagreeing, then more power to you. Disagreement is healthy. It helps people examine multiple sides of an issue.

*crowd goes wild. Lol, sorry, he's a great speaker, but thats how he talks without a teleprompter.

Don;t be fooled by a great speaker, especially one that doesn't write his own. Tell me this isn't embarassing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR4TRrojNJQ now if this was his own don't you think he could go on ..really embarrasing.

Do you not think it slightly concerning that if a member of the administration wished to contact McCain via email, he would have to have a member of staff print that email off for him to read? He would then have to write or dictate a reply for that person to go and type out and email back.

That just doesnt sound like someone who should be at the helm of a nation. That sounds like somebody who is out of touch, who should be retiring and settling down, not advancing to one of the most important jobs in the world.

When talking from a teleprompter, no one can top him, true. But when he doen't have a teleprompter or notes, he thinks though what he's going to say, leading to the "uhs" which happens with many people (myself included). So I don't see the problem as it doesn't make him look like a calculator just punching out the answers like of you knew the questions beforehand.

General Joe:Mr. President you can call off the attack now, just give the confirmation.

General Joe: Sorry Mr. President, you were just 2 seconds too late.

Obama: Uhhhh....Sorry..uh.

Yeah, I don't really understand the "uh" thing... he's human... so he stutters when he thinks about what he's going to say. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes.

It's amazing that so few people seem to think that's why he does it... to me, that's the only explanation that makes sense. The man is very intelligent. Thoughts move faster than the spoken word, hence the "uh" while he mentally doubles back to make sure he's covered everything before moving on to the next point. I know several annoyingly smart people, and they all do it. The fact that they are way smarter than me is far more annoying than the "uhs".

We're talking about a man who called the woman running against him a pig.

mysterylobster

Who might that be? Nobody in this campaign season has done so.

Seriously, John McCain's whole tactic ever since the conventions has been to just sit there and deliberately misinterpret things Obama has said in an attempt to repeatedly play the victim card and to stall all the way until Election Day without having to actually talk about the things that matter to, well, anyone. The scary thing is that it just might work.

I can see it now.

General Joe:Mr. President you can call off the attack now, just give the confirmation.

Obama: Uhhh.....uuhh...I...will.....uh....now...uhhh...call... off..uh... the attack.. uh.

Very nice analogy... except that it makes no sense. Nice try though.

Is the general public really fickle enough to allow McCain to play the POW card this many times? Are people genuinely going to vote for this guy because he was in the military forty years ago?
