[QUOTE="FalcoLX"]FFS we've been over this. For someone to attack a Sikh temple, it's obvious that they had some reason other than "to kill people". From the reports that the shooter was white, we can assume with some certainty that the shooter is also christian, just because a large majority of white people in america are christian.kingkong0124
he could have been Arab too...many Arabs can pass as whites...or maybe he's Jewish..Latino...who knows.

AFAIK Arabs and Jewish people are classified as Caucasian. Hispanic technically as well I suppose.

No. That means just because someone is white...they are not automatically Christian.

Idk about that. I know what youre trying to say but I think that line means that you;re saying that there are no white christians.

Nope. I'm saying what I said...every white person IS not Christian. Ie...some are Jewish, some Muslim, some atheist etc etc etc.

And I hate this freaking error message.:x

For those of you who don't live in Wisconsin, Milwaukee and much of the Lake Michigan shore is very diverse. Much of the rest of the state is very Germanic and Scandinavian. There are many different minorities, including Hmong, Black, Latinos etc.

A concealed carry law was approved this year. I have no idea if the gun used here was aemi-automatic or automatic.

This is all just background information. I teach in Sheboygan, so I am somehwat familiar with Milkwaukee and moreso with eastern Wisconsin.

[QUOTE="kingkong0124"][QUOTE="-Sun_Tzu-"]Kingkong what is your opinion on Wisconsin becoming Little India?-Sun_Tzu-

First of all, a Sikh Temple in a suburb of a major city does not make Wisconsin "Little India". Second of all, there is no need to try and politicize the issue. The fact is innocent people were killed and wounded, and you're trying to use it for your own personal endeavors against me.

It is looking as if this shooting was rooted in cultural differences. Considering you are OT's preeminent scholar on cultural relations I figured I might as well ask you the question.

I have never claimed to be OT's "preeminent scholar on cultural relations"...once again, stop trying to politicize the issue for your own personal gains. Innocent people died, that's all that matters right now.

Saying the shooting is rooted in cultural difference may be the truth, so I don't view that as politicizing it. Sikhs are often mistaken for Muslims, and Sikhs have had problems historically with Muslims.

It is a sad situation, but all of this is trying to understand why.

UnknownSniper65

The Young Turks are just as bad in that regard...not to long ago some one on that "show" actually suggested that the government should have law enforcement and national guard confiscate all "assault weapons"(BS term) and handguns:|

We've come a long way since Columbine, we have mass shootings every year now and they still haven't confiscated your guns. It's not going to happen.

This will be forgotten before the week is out. The killer will barely get his fifteen minutes. I can't imagine how many gun deaths it would even take for gun control to get any serious consideration. Shooting sprees are just part of the Murican experience now.

Still, though. The fact that this comes only two weeks after the Colorado shooting is starting to roll some eyes. If something like this happens again soon, I suspect someone will snap and go not after politicans, but rather after gun advocates like the NRA.

I'd imagine the number of adherents in the US is very small. So unless one has an interest in reading on religious studies or knows someone of the belief or lives near a temple...it's not so far fetched dude.

Not around here they don't......your school district is not the entire US and judging from this thread they aren't well known.[QUOTE="0Hamburgher"] You're telling me that you've NEVER seen an indian dude with a turban walking down the street? and it's above 300 million, unless I'm mistaken?

First I have heard of Sikhs. But no....I have never seen one walking down the street in the US. Perhaps cities like New York and Chicago. Immigrants tend to settle with other like immigrants. So with only 500K in the US I'd imagine most of the US hasn't seen one.

Here's a video interview from one of the people in Oak Creek who witnessed the shooting. This is probably one of the earliest videos from the scene-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRBuhXeXels

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRBuhXeXels

The witness says that 4 men carried out the shooting, and that one is down. Do not listen to the mainstream media reports that say it was a lone gunman.

This is very sad. And in any case it doesn't matter if you haven't seen one before, it takes 10 seconds to search on Google. Sure I'm a bit surprised that some of you haven't seen a Sikh before, but then again, Sikhs don't cover the entire US. My prayers go out the victims and everyone affected.

If someone isn't familiar with a religion that's getting close to 30 million followers worldwide (that's a lot for a religion) then they aren't well informed

Yes, that the general population doesn't know much about a small group is what we should be focusing on.

If someone isn't familiar with a religion that's getting close to 30 million followers worldwide (that's a lot for a religion) then they aren't well informed

A religion that .004% of the population of the entire Earth follow.

Math isn't your forte I see.

[QUOTE="SpartanMSU"]Yes, everyone should defnitely be familiar with a religion which only .001% of the population follow.

You can't be serious.

Oh please. I'm sure you haven't heard about every small group that exists worldwide.

How isn't it? Insulting my math skills doesn't change the fact that 30 million people is a lot of people. You make it sound like if they all just died, nothing would change

Actually it is. It's a small part of total population.

Sikhism isn't that small, buddy.

30 million our of 7 billion is 4 tenths of a percent, and most are in India.

500,000 out of 370000000 million is 1 tenth of a percent.

In the grand scheme of things, they are a small group. That doesn't belittle their importance, however.

And any death or deaths that were premeditated are a serious problem.

when you look at the fact that there are only 4 religions that are more widely practised, I'm sure it isn't that small

I tend to agree with you. For example, there are less than 8 million Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide. Who hasn't heard of them?
