I don't know what this "spirit" is, do we have one?

I think death is the termination of all bodily functions in a living organism.

The whole "Designed by intelligence" argument is possibly the failest thing ever. Your theory goes by the idea that something complex must have been created by an intelligence. This argument fails right here to begin with, as a designer would have be designed, as they are also a complex being.

Not to mention the fact that Evolution has been proven.

HipYoungster42

God's origin is a completely different matter, in which philosophy would have to be injected into this debate. For the third time in a row, I'm not going to be intentionally injecting any form of philosophy into this argument, for philosophy is not something to be compacted into a single post.

It's called the "Theory of Evolution" for a reason. Until it can be 100% proven with no missing links, then I will acknowledge as a theory and nothing more.

EDIT: By the way, I said "orderly", not complex.

You should look up what a scientific theory is. A scientific theory has withstood traisl and errors and tests and outrcomes and basically is considered a fact. A theory does not become a law if that's what you're thinking. A law explains how things happen while a theory explains why it happens. Before it becomes a theory and has witstood rigourous testing it is called a scientific hypothesis.

So it seems Atheists want definitive proof of god before they would believe. Yet faith is to believe in what cannot be proven.

Anyway my question to atheists you believe your existence is by chance, that there is no purpose in life, that there is nothing but eternal nothingness when you die. That there is no penalty for suicide. That nothing you do in life has any meaning.

Don't understand why anyone would choose such a depressing state of existence.

kate_jones

You are ignorant, like most religious people, about Atheists such as myself. Being an Atheist encompasses the denial of any God. Nothing more. To say all Atheists believe in nothing, have no morales etc. is pure crap. You are talking about Nihilists (spelling?), who as far as I know believe in 'nothing'.

Each Atheist has there own set of morales and beliefs, as well as their own purpose or goal in life. Eg. My purpose for my life is to be successful and happy.

On track though, yes I do believe that suicide has no penalty and that death leads to eternal nothingness. It's the truth. Why would I believe in something that isn't true. THAT would be what I call a depressing state of existence. Me? I can live my life free of the shackles of religion, and make my own choices.

EDIT- Excuse my bad spelling and / or grammar, it's almost 5am here lol.

are you sure youre not agnostic, I am not shackled by religion, and it sounds like you are not shackled by atheism

I'm sure I'm not Agnostic. There is no God, and the reason I am not shackled by Atheism, is because there is no shackles.

Well it's true. Many religious people have this idea that Atheists have no beliefs of any kind.

I'm willing to bet you know only a handful of religious people in this world so it's ignorant for you to say 'most' since you do not know 'most' of them.

I know manywho do not think that way.

So, if reality is cold and filled with nothingness, I should make up a story for the origins of existence, with eternal bliss at the end? Thats what it seems youre saying. Especially with the words"choice" thrown in

Well, no. I was born a Mormon, and I became an Atheist at 17. I spent years as not only a religious person, but around other religious people. I'm basing it off my experience.

That would be unfair, because he would be punishing me for being all Too Human. The fact of the matter is that God, if he exists, made me this way. I am compelled by reason towards a state of skepticism at the very least; skepticism towards everything, even scienece. If God wants to punish me for his own failure of design, that seems like the blame is being placed on the wrong actor.

I can't say their definitely is no god anymore than I can say their definitely is no Flying Spaghetti Monster, Zeus, Thor, Odin, Celestial Tea Pot, or Pink Unicorn. I do however find him/her highly improbable, and what backs up my theory is the lack of evidence to back up the opposite theory.

He wants to be happy because its human nature to be happy, because if happyness was not achievable one would do nothing. Only those who want to be happy breed, its all part of survival (evolution)

[QUOTE="GazaAli"][QUOTE="BumFluff122"]The excuses? The reason why you think they are getting old is because it is the same reason why many people don't believe in an invisible superman or a flying sppaghetti monster or pink unicorns with tentacles coming out of their eyes. There is no evidence. Since the beginning of your religion of choice there has not been any evidence. That is why to believe one must have 'faith'. Would you like us to come up with another reason why we don't believe?

oh_boss

what was that? again with your unoriginality.

Actually, even if I support religion, the messages that the christian church is trying to pass nowadays, are pretty "unbelievable"

Yes. Evolution has been proven time and time again. Creatures adapt to theirenvironment. there are real world examples of this. Anyone who thinks otherwise has turned a blind eye to the truth and is yelling at the top of their lungs with their fingers in their ears.

God and anything similar to him is the antithesis of science, nature, morality, logic, and existence. God is given so much an elite status, that he can defy scientific law, natural law, morality, logic and existence. If he wanted to, he could've made this life an illusion, which is no surprise that many people who believe in God believe in an afterlife. The cake is a lie. Additionally, if there was a God, people would be born equal in practice, not just in theory as is the case with natural rights, but many people even fail to make it to birth (abortion, miscarriages) and those that do can suffer birth defects and other anomalies that are not the baby's fault.

Most atheists don't believe in a spirit. They believe that what is defined as a person ceases to exist once they die.

[QUOTE="gubrushadow"] no it aint , i know why you dont think christianity is a true religion , why would GOD (who created everything) lay himself in a woman's oviduct ??

Yes it is, your whole religion is based on delusions Muhammad had. He assumed the voices he heard was "God". Today we would call that a mental illness. And I don't care about Christianity.

Beliefs do not = religion. I believe in justice, respect, friendship etc. Do I need to explain why I want to be happy? This is the only lifetime I get, so I want it to be a good one, not a bad one.

Free_Marxet

yes I would like to hear why you want to happy. I dont understand what the difference between a good life and a bad life is to you. Once your dead your dead. Give me one reason why a dead atheist cares about what they did in there life.

an atheist cares more about what they do in life than a christian. Atheists believe in one life, thus you msut live to its fullest potential. a christian can be evil until t he day they die, and ask for forgiveness on the death bed.

Where do you make this stuff up from? Ridiculous.

Yes, if you pray for things that are likely to happen either way, "god" might fulfill them!

i really wish i could believe in god. but the bible makes no sense. lots of things in it are obviously wrong and just a product of what was believed in the time when it was written. i really wish i could believe that there was a greater purpose and good and evil existed. but i cant. so im stuck in my own nihilistic sad and depressing excistance. if you have a belief that makes you feel good then you shouldn't let it be taken away if you can help itlloveLamp
Just because there's no god doesn't mean there isn't a purpose. When you think about it, everything you do is for a purpose, whether legitimate or not. Eating food is essential for living for example. Many things we do require purpose, but they don't require the divine.

Thats what I don't get, I dont understand why an atheist cares about there life, also a christian can't do evil things with the intent of being forgiven, at least that is what I was tought. I hope Im being inquisitive as intended and not offensive.

Are youo trying to ask where an atheist gets their morals? Morals are learned from a young age and are needed in societal structures throughout the animal kingdom so their society can survive. Some animals hunt for food in packs. They must have morals too right? IF they didn;t have morals they wouldn't work as a cohesive unit. If humans didn;t have morals and didn't learn to live societal livign we would have gone extinct long ago.

You cannot say that for people just by their religion.

Up to a point, yes. When said beliefs are used as a justification to commit atrocities, that's where my patience ends.
