Just like all music, there is a lot of good and a lot of bad artists who use distorted vocals. I quite enjoy a lot of it though. Even things as strange as this.

LOLZ! You should hear some of my favorite music. You might start getting the holy water and the crucifix ready to throw at your computer screen. LOLZ! (BTW screaming music is not Devil music and I don't listen to Devil stuff since I don't like it. But there are bands out there that do sing about that stuff, but I hate that stuff).

No this is not a "ALL METAL IS SATANIC!!!" thread...just want to see what you guys think about the music which is actually all screams.

imo I think it sucks, 0 harmony, it makes my ears hurt, cant even make out what the lyrics say...really I dont see why would anyone like this kind of music...but to each his own I guess.

lightleggy
There's significantly more to music than the vocals. Most people just don't have an ear for it. Death and black metal focuses less on catchy vocals and more on atmosphere and song composition.

You gotta find the right heavy metal band to be honest. Yea some bands "screams" are fricken terrible and 0 harmony like you said but good metal bands such as lamb of god or all that remains (even though they're more metalcore) have really good screaming or harsh vocals.atony12
I wonder if it's a coincidence that people who listen to metal yet shy away from more extreme forms of metal know absolutely nil about music.

Actually no its not as easy as you think it is. Sure anyone can TRY to scream into the mic but then they'll screw their vocal chords up pretty badly. It actually is a challenge and takes skill to do properly.

A lot of metal does. Symphonic metal, progressive metal, Folk metal, melodic metal etc.. And that's why I love metal. ;)

I don't think there is a such thing as "devil music". Sure there are bands that talk about some nasty stuff and have horror like artwork on their albums but I haven't heard of a band that just worshipped the "devil". And on the topic of mainstream music, I actively hate that music. It's uncreative, boring, simple, and only for the image of the singers rather than the music itself. That's just my opinion though.

And let me make something clear as well. I don't classify metal with "screaming" to be "screamo". Screamo I believe is a another genre. At least I think.

this notion that extreme metal bands as a whole are more complex than most other genres is elitist nonsense. they are generally busier, but that doesnt mean they are more intellectual or complex. i like certain bands from the genre for their immediacy and willingness to explore the grotesque musically, but there are relatively complex metal songs just like there are examples of relatively complex music in lots of other genres.

I'd say Deicide's "Once Upon the Cross" with songs like "Kill The Christian" and "Confessional Rape" might qualify. I thought that was a disturbing album lyrically... and I listen to and like Cannibal Corpse.

Wait... who said anything like this in this thread? Talk about presumptuous response. And I would argue that complexity doesn't necessarily make it better, it just adds different layers to the sound that makes it different from traditional rock or regular metal. I listen to groove and death metal because of the dark, masculine sound, and the lyrics that tell a story of the macabre, examine the existential and explore our mortality (one of my favorite examples being "Now I Lay The Down" by Machine Head). When I hear a top-40 song about "going to the club and getting drunk" it makes me sad that this is all that most people ever listen to, and the real artists are happy to remain in obscurity with a devoted fanbase. Mainstream music is a fabricated "product" designed for consumption... rather than musical expression. When I hear Robb Flynn's strained vocals in the final chorus in the song I mentioned, it really speaks to me about what he is trying to say with his music. He conveys a ton of emotion without even focusing on the words he is saying.

This thread has told me to do two things: Start listening to Amon Amarth, and start listening to Nightwish.

Is the "Imaginaerum" album more... carnival-y-styIe? I like straight-up symphonic music, but that would be an addition over that.
I like the ..quirky? sound to some Diablo Swing Orchestra songs, and got "There Be Squabbles Ahead" by Stolen Babies CD around Christmas time (but haven't listened through it yet!). The latter might not be completely metal.

who said i was talking about anyone in particular in this thread? talk about presumptuous. there are just a lot of people that ive met (and yes, some that ive read on internet forums) that claim to listen to metal because its complex. its just a genre, good as any, that can sound complex without ever being so. im saying that there are complexities in a variety of genres, but i tend to listen to metal for its explorations of the grotesque in the language of rock.

Gibsonsg527

Opeth is boring... zzzZZZzzzZZZzzzZZZzzz. Sure, they're talented musicians. But I listen to metal for aggression and adrenaline, not to be put to sleep. I hardly even consider Opeth metal. They're just progressive music with the occasional death metal influenced parts. They can't really be specifically classified into the metal genre, since their range of influences reaches far beyond just metal. They're straight up prog, about as "prog" as a band can get.

And I don't hate them. It's just that Blackwater Park is the only CD I can tolerate of Opeth for more than 15 mins or so at a time before getting bored, and that's only because that CD has the most memorable songs they've ever wrote IMO.

I like "screaming" or "death growls" if its done right like with Opeth.

Messiahbolical-

Opeth is prog Metal in other words.....its Metal. I like how their songs are more slow and drowning it builds atmosphere. Metal doesn't always haveto be agressive and fast.

I love Metal, its all about melding all that sound into one and being totally in synch with each other and still sounding great. People may call it the devils music but to me Rap and Hip hop do way more damage to the world than Metal. There is a lot of talent in a metal band, listening to the musicians that can pull it off is a mind blowing experience.

I dig it when noise bands like the Locust do it, or when it's done sparingly as a sort of cathartic moment, but when metal bands do it I just kind of giggle at how self-important and overly serious they sound.

I like metal, and I love harsh vocals when done right. May I take this opportunity to let it be known that I think the majority of OT has bad taste in metal, with the exception of a few.
