Opeth is boring... zzzZZZzzzZZZzzzZZZzzz. Sure, they're talented musicians. But I listen to metal for aggression and adrenaline, not to be put to sleep. I hardly even consider Opeth metal. They're just progressive music with the occasional death metal influenced parts. They can't really be specifically classified into the metal genre, since their range of influences reaches far beyond just metal. They're straight up prog, about as "prog" as a band can get.[QUOTE="Messiahbolical-"]
[QUOTE="Gibsonsg527"]
I like "screaming" or "death growls" if its done right like with Opeth.
Gibsonsg527
And I don't hate them. It's just that Blackwater Park is the only CD I can tolerate of Opeth for more than 15 mins or so at a time before getting bored, and that's only because that CD has the most memorable songs they've ever wrote IMO.
Opeth is prog Metal in other words.....its Metal. I like how their songs are more slow and drowning it builds atmosphere. Metal doesn't always haveto be aggressive and fast. I understand that and I can see why some people might like it, but personally the biggest appeal of metal is the pure raw heaviness and aggression... which Opeth lacks for the most part. It's hard to consider Opeth "metal" when practically only around 30% of the music they write has the true metal elements in it. Most of what they write consists of slow, atmospheric clean guitar playing and soft clean vocals. I guess you could call it "dark", but "dark" doesn't exactly mean "metal". Same with Doom "Metal"... it's a joke IMO. I don't think it should carry the "Metal" tag. Just call it "Doom" and be done with it. It doesn't sound anything like any other metal genre so why try to classify it with the rest? Metal has never been about being slow and atmospheric, it's always been about aggression and power. It doesn't really bother me that much, it's just something I've never understood. You have Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Folk Metal, etc etc etc.... all genres that tend to have the main elements of power and aggression that metal was founded on. Then you get to Doom Metal and it just doesn't fit in at all. It's so... depressing. It's pretty much the complete opposite of metal. The anti-metal. And Opeth, although some of their songs are very death metal influenced with a lot of pretty aggressive parts, a lot of what they write is damn closely related to doom metal.[QUOTE="Gibsonsg527"]Opeth is prog Metal in other words.....its Metal. LOL. Now I know your joking.
yeah he has to be :P but just in case, il use the devil wears prada as an example as they are incredibly christian! and my personal favorite band :Pasking alexandria is one of my least favorite metalcore bands ever. i love metalcore, but god do i hate asking alexandria. no idea why theyre popular.i just recently attempted to listen to asking alexandria or wtf and wanted to put a bullet in my head, but i like a few bands that do scream and do it good

I think he means something like this: (I love this song BTW)

song is garbagemaking someone listen to death metal/screamo is a form of torture
im not even kidding, kill me before making me listen to that crap
Metal doesn't always haveto be agressive and fast.Gibsonsg527Fast, no. Aggressive, yes. The whole idea behind metal is a strong, powerful, masculine sound. If it doesn't have that, it isn't metal. I haven't listened to Opeth at all, so I can't comment about specifics. The idea of "clean" guitar shouldn't be in the same sentence as metal, unless it is part of an intro or an interlude (In Flames has some amazing acoustic work, but that doesn't make it metal per se).

Black Sabbath were the innovators that inspired the doom metal movement, they were classified as heavy metal. "Doom metal" didn't exist until well after they lost Ozzy.
Can't standing screaming music, absolute garbage
If I go yell out my window that's considered music then? it never ceases to amaze me how low the standards have dropped
You mean zero melody and your talent comment is pretty ignorant.
I like music with harsh vocals. Just 'screaming' though? Not a big fan of most bands where the vocalist only hits those high pitches.
Ugh... yeah they can shread instruments but in terms vocal than mehhh they can hire me or a hobo off the street to do the same. So no, unless Im feeling very emo that day.
[QUOTE="imaps3fanboy"]screaming.. noGuppy507Stop that. Stop that right now. I'm simply talking about metalcore and screamo garbage black metal screeches and death metal growls are in a different category

I get why people don't like the music, I can understand it completely. But for me I love it. Two bands I am really into right now are.
Sylosis - Teras
Darkest hour - low
Sorry I couldn't link glitchspot wouldn't let me.

Because they are. Metalheads are by far the worst group of musical fans. I can understand why others will say that so and so is "just noise", but to say that things like pop music and hip hop "requires no talent" is so wrong.

While describing stuff they have actually listened to rather that just one bad song that supposedly represents an entire genre

Metalhead snobs may be worse than hipsters in that regard
I can understand why others will say that so and so is "just noise", but to say that things like pop music and hip hop "requires no talent" is so wrong.freek666I f***ing DARE a pop or hip-hop act to do a song that sounds anything like this or this. I intentionally picked two instrumentals because both of those genres these days rely on vocals to get by; without someone singing, they're just repetitive electronic noise.
In other words... no, no one in modern pop or hip-hop has a fraction of the talent of a metal band from any era.

Just because a band plays instruments doesn't mean they're any good (aka Nickelback). You can "dare" any non-metal act to sound better, but in the end its all biased opinion...
Metalheads are by far the worst group of musical fans.freek666Metalheads are really bad (especially because most metalheads like symphonic metal and lots of lame sh!t), but I'd take them over classic rock fans anyday. Even if it's from the classic rock time period they won't like it unless it's a big name like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin.

Your mention of Nickelback is puzzling. They're not a metal band (thank God), so they have nothing to do with my point. Also, I didn't dare just any non-metal acts, I specifically called out the hip-hop and pop acts mentioned by the person I quoted. I know that not one of them could come up with anything more complex than "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on a real instrument.

I didn't list Nickelback as metal; rather a band that knows how to play their instruments.. Regardless I stand by my statement that playing instruments doesn't make you automatically good. Seems like you only like groups that play actual instruments, am I correct?
I didn't list Nickelback as metal; rather a band that knows how to play their instruments...Wolf-Man2006...which, again, has absolutely nothing to do with my point.
The post I quoted specifically called out metal bands.
Re-listen to those links. Both bands are metal bands. Both bands have REAL talent.
Hip-hop and pop acts have vocalists and... that's it. Even the lyrics are bad...
Lady Gaga's latest song: "I'm on the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge, the edge..."
...you must get the point by now.
None of that has anything (repeat: ANYTHING) to do with Nickelback. The only possible need for a Nickelback reference is as a strawman. Nickelback are not metal. Nickelback are not hip-hop or pop (popular maybe... though only God knows why).

Lady Gaga is alright, maybe not a lyrical genius but her songs pretty catchy. Actually it does because you make a big deal about playing instruments being a lot better than most musicians on the top charts regardless if the actual music is good. Again I bring Nickelback up (even though they're about as metal as The Archies) because they do play their own instruments, which seems to be your point regarding musicians playing instruments. Bringing up Nickelback is relevant to your arugment because again, they play guitar and drums. If I wanted to use a metal band, I probably would have selected Bullet for My Valent (decent when instrumental, horrendous lyrics)
I'm a bit confused regarding whether you consider the music or lyrics better. Previously you were posting about the music and instruments being the most important factor and now you're posting about bad pop lyrics... Do you think the music is a lot better than lyrics in general?

A more clean sound can bring more emotion into the song.

It is something that pushes the boundaries of the human's ability to produce music with their bodies. I love it when it is well done, and produced by someone with musical talent. It really increases the expressiveness of really heavy, dark music, where melodic, "clean" vocals sound completely out of place (see: Metallica). Robb Flynn of Machine Head, Karl Sanders of Nile and Piotr Wiwczarek of Vader are my favourite vocalists.foxhound_fox
If you like Karl Sanders and you like Nile its well worth checking out Muhammed Sucimez's vocal work with necrophagist, or Fleshgod apocalyspe the violation's vocals are insanely well done and on top of that the bassists clean vocals are immensely well done and show how you can use clean in tech dm :P
Clean vocals is great in genre's like thrash they suit it well and still deeply rooted in older Hardcore especially crossover thrash.
