People who think good rappers have no talent out of their minds, plain and simple. Rap is nowhere near my favourite genre, but if you really think you could write/rap anything as good as a skilled rapper (hint: not Lil Wayne or Soulja Boy) I would love some of what you're smoking.

EDIT: and if you're a death metal fan who likes screaming, please don't embarrass yourself further by calling rap "talking over beats".

airg6

Sir thats what rap is. Id like to see you scream with as much emotion as a death metal singer.

Sure, but that would be like calling metal "screaming over arpeggios," it makes the art seem easier than it is. Scream with emotion? I do it all the time when I fight with my girlfriend, watch my favourite sports team, or get cut off on the road.

Im not saying that. Most rap is untalented.most rap does not contain the properties that make up music. I could make a rap record if I tried hard enough. I just have to make a beat, write some lyrics and practice rhyming. Rappers dont even have to have good voices because all they do is talk.

Garbage? Listen to The Roots.

I YouTube'd them and heard some guitaring and drums, so I wouldn't put them in the same category as the garbage rap that's just a repeated beat and rapping about something stupid.

The content of the music doesn't matter.. repeated beat doesn't matter either. It's music by definition. Weather you like it or not or weather you think it's good music or not is a different story. But it definetly IS music.

How is hip hop/rap (whatever you want to call it) not music? Just because it doesn't use live instruments a lot of the time doesn't discount it as music.

Making beats takes just as much skill as say a.....bass guitar. You have to have a very good ear for music, good timing, and a number of other skills. There's a fair bit of piano in making beats. Plus righting meaningful lyrics is just as hard as for any other music. Just because mainstream hip hop isn't very intelligent that doesn't mean that the whole genre isn't music.

You have to have a certain voice to scream. To be a rapper you can really have any voice because its all talking. Im talking about musically screaming. Not traditional yelling.

If you can do it, why not do it and make millions? First off, there are so many rappers out there it isn't even funny.. yet only a select few make it. It takes talent to get to that level. Rappers voices do matter, and they don't just talk. If you would rap on the mic, your voice would sound horrible. I guarentee it.

Beats? It's a hell of a lot harder than you think. To just make a beat? It's not too hard.. but to make a halfway decent beat is damn hard.

But you need talent to go with that voice. Weak rhymes would be rap's equivalent of a crappy screaming voice, only rhyming requires more creativity.

The definition of music states that it is "an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color." Though you may not agree with the ideas or the emotions that rap conveys, it is still conveying ideas and emotions through elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. That's the basic definition of music and rap fits right into it. I've also taken multiple music courses at my university and all of my music professors have considered rap as "music."

Just because you don't like rap doesn't mean it's not music. This is your logic... just because I don't like watermelons, I guess watermelon isn't food? Just because I don't like Nissan Maximas, I guess the Nissan Maxima isn't a car? Just because I don't like mockingbirds, I guess a mockingbird isn't a bird? You can't just go rewriting the dictionary because you dislike something. Rap fulfills every requirement of music, and thus is music, whether you like or dislike it.

Robbin foreigners take they wallets they jewels and rip they green cards
Dipped to the projects flashin my quick cash
and got my first piece of ass smokin blunts with hash
Now it's all about cash in abundance, n****z I used to run with
is rich or doin years in the hundreds
I switched my motto -- instead of sayin **** tomorrow
That buck that bought a bottle could've struck the lotto
Once I stood on the block, loose cracks produce stacks
I cooked up and cut small pieces to get my loot back
Time is Illmatic keep static like wool fabric
Pack a four-matic that crack your whole cabbage

All you people who say rap doesn't take talent, write verses like that, then talk to me.

Half of the words in those verses arent even in the dictionary.

Troll?

[QUOTE="swizz-the-gamer"][QUOTE="airg6"][QUOTE="swizz-the-gamer"][QUOTE="airg6"]Im not saying that. Most rap is untalented.most rap does not contain the properties that make up music. I could make a rap record if I tried hard enough. I just have to make a beat, write some lyrics and practice rhyming. Rappers dont even have to have good voices because all they do is talk.airg6

I just dont think that their is much rap that is good. You can name all the people you want. Ive heard most of the people youve named in the topic I made about a week ago. I just cant enjoy most of it.

Does it? You ignored melody and harmony.

You have to have a certain voice to scream. To be a rapper you can really have any voice because its all talking. Im talking about musically screaming. Not traditional yelling.

Please. If you seriously think rappers just talk over beats then you know nothing. It takes talent to rap over beat and to have amazing flow and lyrics to match the beat. And when I mean flow and having good lyrics dosen't mean just putting simple words together like cat and hat.

But it is talking over beats...

If it makes you feel any better, this "talking" is basically an instrument promoting rhythm and melody. We can argue all day about how much talent rap takes, whether rap or rock is better, how much sex, drugs, and violence are in rap... but at the end of the day there is no denying that rap is an art of sound in time, and therefore is music. I don't see why anyone is even arguing about anything other than that.

Listen to this and tell me you can write a more complex rhyme scheme and make a better / more emotional song than this:

Yeah, the same way metal is screaming over arpeggios and hitting a hole in one is wacking a ball with a stick. Wow, when I give the simplest definition of anything, it's like there's nothing I can't do!

So you've changed from "rap isn't music" to "rappers aren't as talented as Joe Satriani." Excellent backtrack, this thread is is basically over now. Rap = music.

I would not call rap music, and I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it a poetic art form, but I'll go ahead and agree with that part. I suppose it depends on a lot of things... I don't listen to rap at all, and I'm usually annoyed by it. However, if there is a decent message conveyed well, then I suppose you can call it a poetic art form.

[QUOTE="airg6"]I no what youre trying to get me to understand. You think im generalizing the whole genre of rap because of the mainstream rap like lil wayne. I just dont think that their is much rap that is good. You can name all the people you want. Ive heard most of the people youve named in the topic I made about a week ago. I just cant enjoy most of it.

Does it? You ignored melody and harmony.

Every rap song has melody and harmony :| Even Soulja Boy's Crank That does :| How shocking :|

Meh. It certainly disregards it to the extent that they're pretty much irrelevant.

Are you serious? Bands like the Beatles who are rock legends have some of the simplest melodies out there, why do you think their songs are so catchy? Wow...

Do you even know what melody and harmony is?
