[QUOTE="Funky_Llama"]What, that pathetic little melody in the background?Vyse_The_Daring

So it's gone from no melody, to hardly any melody, to a pathetic melody?

Considering Soulja Boy is the worst rapper ever, and you still can't argue his songs aren't music, the thread is over.

I can and will. It's not music. By your logic, a movie is music. But it's not because it has music, but it's not central to it, so a movie is not a piece of music. With rap, there is a melody but it's not central to it, so it's not music.

That comparison is so asinine I can't even begin to sink to a level where I might be able to argue your point.

Yeah, it made me lol pretty hard.

If you don't listen to it, how can you possibly assert that it's not music?

Just because I don't listen to it doesn't mean I've never been exposed to it. I hear it all the time. Whether it's from TV, the radio, or other people that happen to have a boom box, I have heard enough to for my opinion here. Most of it is just crap anywhay, but that's mostly due to the subject matter chosen nowadays. I've broken rap into two categories thusfar:

1. Complaining - The rapper is complaining about their life, misfortune, being mistreated by someone, or anything for that matter.

2. Boasting - The rapper is bragging about their supopsed riches, fame, and so on.

Listen to The Roots-You Got Me. My all time favorite song.

Like I said... Not my kind of music, but I certainly have heard worse.

But it doesn't fall into your catagories!

Funky Llama, you points about melody make no sense. During a drum solo, the focus is not melody, does that mean every song with a drum solo is no longer considered music?

Maybe you didn't realize that subject matter has nothing to do with the MUSICAL elements of rap. What are you even arguing about:lol: If the Beatles made a song about love and butterflies it would be music.... but then if the Beatles made another song with the exact same melody, same instruments, same everything but only changed the lyrics to subject matter about complaining, boasting, hate, crime, sex, drugs, or violence it would no longer be music? Are you serious....

Read my previous post, and you will see the reasons why I would not call it music. The post that you quoted above was just to further project an opinion I stated before. I was merely stating that it all seems the same to me. Maybe I should have been more clear.

Am I the only one who thinks music shouldn't be considered music? Granted, I don't listen to music much, but I've been exposed to it, and it doesn't seem like the melody is very important.

I'm really starting to doubt whether you are a pianist who understands time signatures if you can't realize the difference between movie dialogue and person rapping. Most rap is set in 4/4 time and even someone like Soulja Boy displays obvious traits of rhythm and melody. Movie dialogue has no rhythm or melody, and it's not sound set to time...

I would also argue that the basic melody of Soulja Boy's Crank That is the most important element of the song, the part that made it so catchy, and main reason why it became a #1 single... it's definitely a central part of the music :|

Sure, whatever. It doesn't change the fact that a melody can't be the "focus" of a song. Give me an example of a melody being the focus of a song.

Look.Rap is garbage. I dont care what I said anymore. Rap sucks. Listen to you're crappy untalented music. You guys will never understand talent. You guys just try to keep on defending you're music because you know its garbage. You can compare rappers abilities and a musician like kirk hamett's. Kirk hamett has more talent than any rapper. Thats all I have to say. Im done and dont plan to listen to rap anymore because of you ignorant fools. I already know what youre gonna say so just save it.airg6

Judging from your views on an entire genre of music, the range of music I listen to is probably 2-3 times larger than yours. Rap isn't even my favourite genre, not by a long shot.

Proof?

Just look at how well he can play all the riffs and solo's through out the shows over the years. Rappers are untalented and it really is no strain for them to rap.

Listen to Bizzy Bone.

you're obviously the one who is ignorant and closed-minded. You can't even compare someone like kirk hamett to a rapper. They are not doing the same things. Can kirk hamett rap like 2pac, biggie, nas or jay z? No. Can a rapper do whatever it is that kirk hamett does? Also a no.

Just because you think rap is garbage and it sucks, doesn't mean it's not music. It is and there is nothing you can say or do to change it.

I don't like bananas! So can i just say they aren't fruits anymore because I don't like them?
I don't like Scions! So I can I just say they aren't cars anymore because I don't like them?
I don't like bees! So can I just say they aren't insects anymore because I don't like them?

Just because you dislike something doesn't mean you can just change the definition of what something is. Rap obviously falls under the definition of music, as it is the art of sound in time that expresses emotion and ideas:|

I fail to see why everyone's getting so annoyed. I would like to clarify that though I do not consider rap to be music, I'm not saying that it is inferior to music; I think rap can be an art form, and it can be as 'good' as music.

And yeah, that movie/music comparison was really stupid. I don't know what I was thinking.:?

Just look at how good Busta Rhymes delivery is and how original his lyrics are.

Also, Hammett can't write music.....at all....look how bad Metallica got after Cliff died.

So what your saying is...

"MY VIEWS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT! MY VIEWS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT! WHO EVERY TRIES TO PROVE ME WRONG IS IGNORANT!"

I am now enlightened and will never listen to rap again.

What does rap not have that makes it not music? It has every other component of music theory that rock does.

How can you measure talent? There are so many factors and it's all down to opinion. You cant say someone who does something COMPLETLEY different to someone else more talented.

[QUOTE="tsb247"]I would not call rap music, and I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it a poetic art form, but I'll go ahead and agree with that part. I suppose it depends on a lot of things... I don't listen to rap at all, and I'm usually annoyed by it. However, if there is a decent message conveyed well, then I suppose you can call it a poetic art form.swizz-the-gamer

True. I never said I was the king of absolutes.

Try listening to this.

Mercenary - Lost Reality

MY favorite song as of this moment.

I am not attacking Rock music! I love Rock music.

I don't mean to attack rap... I'm just not a fan, and I can be quite opinionated sometimes. It's cool. I know you aren't.

You said it was not music.

Yes, I did. However, I never said it was all garbage like the TC. However, I have yet to hear any that I truly enjoy, and I do have my opinions... I know... I don't make much sense... I'm exhausted.

I don't see how any musically educated person can even begin to consider rap not being music. If you are a pianist, I don't see how you can really fail to classify rap as music.

How? He is a great metal musician. Jay-Z is a great rapper. You can't say Jay-Z sucks because he can't play bass and you can't say Cliff sucks because he can't rap. It's two completly different styles of music. If Cliff is more talented than any rapper, how come Cliff can't rap?

I don't think MAINSTREAM rap should be considered music because most of that is amelodic and just a synthesized drum beat so they can pump out a fast album. There is plenty of underground rap though that is more creative and uses some melody/musical talent because those independant ones take time to mess around a little.

Note: I don't even like the underground rap.

I bet y'all didn't even know.... rap is actually a break off of rock and roll. I took a "history of rock and roll" class at Sam Houston State University.... and guess what? We studied some rap music of the 80's. Yes, rap MUSIC.

If I had my textbook still I would **** all over you anti rap guys.

Meh. I consider rap to be more of... I don't know if there's a word for it. But if there is a word for a kind of spoken word/poetic art form, it's that.

[QUOTE="tsb247"]I would also contest the idea that rap has melody. While I'm sure there are some that do, I have also heard my fair share of simple beat-box style rap (which I hate). It's just the same beat over and over and over with no real deviation. Yeah... Not music. Music should have rhythm, melody, and harmony. A lot of the time, those are lacking.-Austin-

Yeah. When they do have melody, it's only on the periphery; it's not central to the music, so it's not music.

how is it not central to the music?

Of course it's not central to the music! Rap isn't fundamentally based on melody!

Rap has always been a form of music. FACT

Funky_Llama obviously has no idea what he is talking about. Many avant-garde composers view melody as an after-thought, and there is barely any noticable melody found in the song, but it's still music.

Eric Dolphy solo

Melody is not a central element of free jazz at all, for example. Is free jazz not music? Where is the central melody in the song I just posted?
