I would not call rap music, and I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it a poetic art form, but I'll go ahead and agree with that part. I suppose it depends on a lot of things... I don't listen to rap at all, and I'm usually annoyed by it. However, if there is a decent message conveyed well, then I suppose you can call it a poetic art form.tsb247

If you don't listen to it, how can you possibly assert that it's not music?

[QUOTE="airg6"]I no what youre trying to get me to understand. You think im generalizing the whole genre of rap because of the mainstream rap like lil wayne. I just dont think that their is much rap that is good. You can name all the people you want. Ive heard most of the people youve named in the topic I made about a week ago. I just cant enjoy most of it.

The definition of music states that it is "an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color." Though you may not agree with the ideas or the emotions that rap conveys, it is still conveying ideas and emotions through elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. That's the basic definition of music and rap fits right into it. I've also taken multiple music courses at my university and all of my music professors have considered rap as "music."

Just because you don't like rap doesn't mean it's not music. This is your logic... just because I don't like watermelons, I guess watermelon isn't food? Just because I don't like Nissan Maximas, I guess the Nissan Maxima isn't a car? Just because I don't like mockingbirds, I guess a mockingbird isn't a bird? You can't just go rewriting the dictionary because you dislike something. Rap fulfills every requirement of music, and thus is music, whether you like or dislike it.

Does it? You ignored melody and harmony.

Every rap song has melody and harmony :| Even Soulja Boy's Crank That does :| How shocking :|

Meh. It certainly disregards it to the extent that they're pretty much irrelevant.

It's all in perspective. I think alot screamo music disregards those things but I don't make threads preaching how it is not music.

Are you serious? Bands like the Beatles who are rock legends have some of the simplest melodies out there, why do you think their songs are so catchy? Wow...

They're simple, but they're still central to the music. And when melody isn't central to the music, it ceases to be music as far as I'm concerned.

I would also contest the idea that rap has melody. While I'm sure there are some that do, I have also heard my fair share of simple beat-box style rap (which I hate). It's just the same beat over and over and over with no real deviation. Yeah... Not music. Music should have rhythm, melody, and harmony. A lot of the time, those are lacking.

If you don't even listen to rap, how do you have enough knowledge to make accurate judgements about what rap is and isn't? Seems fairly illogical and quite ignorant, just saying...

Poetry is also not merely confined to poems with a "decent message conveyed," you could be writing about the Holocaust, 9/11, war, bombs, Osama Bin Laden and how great all of these things are and it would still be poetry. Subject matter does not define what is and isn't poetry, just saying...

How am I twisting what you said? This thread is about whether rap is music or not. I don't care if in your opinion Joe Satriani is more talented than any rapper (although you don't even listen to rap, uninformed opinions FTL), because that is completely and utterly irrelevant to the topic at hand.

That is COMPLETELY irelevent to ANYTHING this thread is about. First off, talent means little to nothing. What do I mean by that? It has absoluetly nothing to do with identifying what is music and what is not. Comparing talent is like comparing apples to oranges also.. unless they are both doing the exact same things.

You are rediculous.

Just because I don't listen to it doesn't mean I've never been exposed to it. I hear it all the time. Whether it's from TV, the radio, or other people that happen to have a boom box, I have heard enough to for my opinion here. Most of it is just crap anywhay, but that's mostly due to the subject matter chosen nowadays. I've broken rap into two categories thusfar:

1. Complaining - The rapper is complaining about their life, misfortune, being mistreated by someone, or anything for that matter.

2. Boasting - The rapper is bragging about their supopsed riches, fame, and so on.

I can and will. It's not music. By your logic, a movie is music. But it's not because it has music, but it's not central to it, so a movie is not a piece of music. With rap, there is a melody but it's not central to it, so it's not music.

How am I twisting what you said? This thread is about whether rap is music or not. I don't care if in your opinion Joe Satriani is more talented than any rapper (although you don't even listen to rap, uninformed opinions FTL), because that is completely and utterly irrelevant to the topic at hand.

Rap = music, have a nice day.

I used to listen to rap alot. Not todays garbage though.

What makes Mos Def garbage and Public Enemy good?

[QUOTE="tsb247"]I would also contest the idea that rap has melody. While I'm sure there are some that do, I have also heard my fair share of simple beat-box style rap (which I hate). It's just the same beat over and over and over with no real deviation. Yeah... Not music. Music should have rhythm, melody, and harmony. A lot of the time, those are lacking.Vyse_The_Daring

Yeah. When they do have melody, it's only on the periphery; it's not central to the music, so it's not music.

You just called it music.

I was speaking hypothetically.

God I hate these threads.

Why can't we respect what other people listen too. Rap fans don't go around preaching that rock music is stupid. We all have different perspectives and taste. Going around saying that what you love and listen to is not music is very insulting. Hell, most of the people who diss rap only touch the surface of it. Taking what see on MTV and hear on the radio.

If you don't listen to it, how can you possibly assert that it's not music?

Just because I don't listen to it doesn't mean I've never been exposed to it. I hear it all the time. Whether it's from TV, the radio, or other people that happen to have a boom box, I have heard enough to for my opinion here. Most of it is just crap anywhay, but that's mostly due to the subject matter chosen nowadays. I've broken rap into two categories thusfar:

1. Complaining - The rapper is complaining about their life, misfortune, being mistreated by someone, or anything for that matter.

2. Boasting - The rapper is bragging about their supopsed riches, fame, and so on.

I would also like to point out that it takes less talent to be a rapper. Can they play any kind of instrument? Most can't. Can they sing (and I mean REALLY sing... As in carry a note)? I have yet to see it. Haven't you noticed that there are new rappers popping up almost every day, but rarely do you hear of any other kind of musician. That's because rapeprs are a dime a dozen nowadays. It's just too easy.

Great, I haven't listened to as many metal bands as the average fan of the genre, but I think that my limited exposure to it has given me enough insight that I can classify an entire genre into two categories:

1. Incoherent screaming (over arpeggios): the singer is screaming into the abyss, but I don't know what about because I can't understand them.

2. Praising Satan: this is the same as incoherent screaming, only it sounds even worse so I can only imagine they're praising the dark lord.

Gee, living in blissful ignorance is much more enjoyable than giving new things a chance.

You don't understand the concept of talent. Anybody can lock themselves in their bedroom and practice 8 hours a day and play alot of notes really fast. That's not talent.

You clearly dont know joe satriani then If you say all he does is play very fast.

That's kind of the concept of Shred music. I have honestly never met an intelligent person who thought Satriani wrote good music.

So youre saying that soulja boy is more talented than joe satriani. Most metal drummers in bands come up with better beats than rappers.

Thats a very stupid thing to say. You don't seem to understand what a genre is. You can't say oh...this genre requires more skill than this one.

Satriani is more talented than Soulja Boy

Mos Def is more talented than Mick Thompson

Basically every genre has very talented musicians and ones that aren't. Oh and blast beats are so much better than anything in hip hop today.....

So it's gone from no melody, to hardly any melody, to a pathetic melody?

Considering Soulja Boy is the worst rapper ever, and you still can't argue his songs aren't music, the thread is over.

I can and will. It's not music. By your logic, a movie is music. But it's not because it has music, but it's not central to it, so a movie is not a piece of music. With rap, there is a melody but it's not central to it, so it's not music.

The movie example is not even a halfway decent analogy. The movie is not a song. A rap song is a rap song. First of all, what does a melody being central have to do with identifying what is music and what isn't? And how does rap music not have a central melody?

Maybe you didn't realize that subject matter has nothing to do with the MUSICAL elements of rap. What are you even arguing about:lol: If the Beatles made a song about love and butterflies it would be music.... but then if the Beatles made another song with the exact same melody, same instruments, same everything but only changed the lyrics to subject matter about complaining, boasting, hate, crime, sex, drugs, or violence it would no longer be music? Are you serious....

That comparison is so asinine I can't even begin to sink to a level where I might be able to argue your point. I'm just going to completely forget that you ever brought up movies.

Beats and melodies are central to the music, despite what you think. Kanye West started his whole career by writing/producing them for great rappers like Jay-Z.
