I tried the beta and couldn't even stomach getting past the beginning.

Do you just jump onto every new MMO that comes out and try to hype it up? You did something similar with SWTOR...V4LENT1NEPlease ENLIGHTEN US and show me where I have pumped The Secret World BEFORE it came out? Please, please.. yep, u can't cause I didn't, so stop talking out of ur a** I am talking about TSW after playing it for 3-4 hrs, and realizing it tries to do things differently than other MMOs. People are great aren't they. They wanted SWTOR to be different from WoW and when they realized it was similar, it got bagged to hell. Now The Secret World comes out....no leveling, story telling and atmosphere first, great graphics, no talent trees etc...and people then bag it for any reason.
Very different from AoC.I keep seeing a lot of mixed opinions on this game. The only thing holding me back is the fact that I was burned with AoC and I'm still fairly bitter about it.

He had some interesting things to say, but the overrall "cheapness" of the combat that he spoke of does seem to be a game breaker for me. So, i'll probably just pass on this mmo.

Combat needs tweaking in some parts....seems to be that every MMO that uses dynamic combat needs tweaking. Players have played the Betas say it has been improved, but overall a solid MMO. Of course it's launch week so it needs patches.[QUOTE="V4LENT1NE"]Do you just jump onto every new MMO that comes out and try to hype it up? Although I applaud their attempt at a new and unique setting, it just didn't pan out for me (in beta). The combat is clunky. The game has a subscription AND a cash shop, right out of the gate. It's going free-to-play within 6 months.
Esoteric
wow that just killed any kind of interest i had in checking it. 2 months left for GW 2!
[QUOTE="QQabitmoar"]
The focus is on story and questing right? So basically, it's another linear story-driven theme-park MMO, but with a few new tricks. Might be interesting for theme-park players I guess...
IxX3xil3d0n3XxI
I do not like themepark MMOs, yet this one is quite fun. I like the stratedgy on choosing your 7 skills and 7 passives out of 500+. The questing and story you are so quick to dismiss is pretty good. Its very dark themed and a modern MMO, both completely new settings. This isnt something that has been done before to this degree.
Does it have open PvP and PK? Uninstanced dungeons where players fight over bosses and the best spots? Guild warfare? Then not interested. That's why I dismiss linear story drivern quest spam theme-parks, doesn't matter how good the quests and the story are.
[QUOTE="Esoteric"]It's going free-to-play within 6 months.Jebus213.... Good, I won't have te play monthly, doesn't mean it failed. As of now im having more fun with SWorld than Guild Wars 2.
Might end up being the next Alpha Protocol with opinions being so different amonst people and reviewers. As in some LOVE IT and some HATE it.
Might give it a try sometime, I like how the atmosphere/story looks (Combat does not look very good though) but I am so dead tired of MMOS (only one I ever loved was Ultima Online), so well see.
I'll play it one day.
The combat looks terribad, but I'd take a bite with any Modern era game written by the honcho behind Dreamfall, all while presenting Lovecraftian fiction to recognizable locales; MMO or not.
I cant help but feel the marketing was poor, Considering the quality of the trailers i've seen from it and the amount of weight the publisher has.
[QUOTE="HyperWarlock"]
When I played the beta it was awful. Really awful. The atmosphere was the only thing that was remotley good about it. Everything else especially the combat, sucked.
IxX3xil3d0n3XxI
You realize that a beta is not a demo, right?
I played the beta and thought the same too. I did however give in because of the skill system and my boredom. I must say that the beta definitely felt a lot worse than the live game. I am throughly enjoying my experience. A lot of references, lore and areas to explore. PVP is fun with its constant zone where you battle it out to hold points which give buffs.
Overall I did not expect it to be this good. I do worry about endgame content, but am definitely enjoying this darker themed MMO. Funcom has almost redeemed themselves in my eyes.
Oh so you're saying they have changed the entire comabt system since release? That's cool, suprised they had the time to do that.

It's still Funcom, though. They have a nasty habit of rushing MMORPGs before they're completely finished, though TenTonHammer put up a review that intrigues me. Maybe if they have a free trial weekend I'll give it a shot.
It seems a bit dodgy to me. The voice acting's poor, the graphics remind me of pre-WoW MMO's like SWG and CoH, and the combat's flat; shotguns in particular just don't feel right and lack power.
The Voice acting is great... and I'm very picky about things like that. Pre-WOW? You must have only played in early beta. The graphics are excellent, especially for an MMO. Playing the game early on, the combat will feel a bit flat, but once you're acquired enough SP and AP, combat becomes a lot more interesting and dynamic. If you're playing a mumbo jumbo build, and screwed it up, I can see why you would be frustrated, bored, or find it completely flat. The one thing I could appreciate more than anything when it comes to builds is that TSW currently doesn't have a cookie-cutter build yet. There's so much room for experimentation for good builds. You won't hear someone saying, your build is weak and stupid. And the community has been wonderful so far. Mostly mature players. It seems a bit dodgy to me. The voice acting's poor, the graphics remind me of pre-WoW MMO's like SWG and CoH, and the combat's flat; shotguns in particular just don't feel right and lack power.

I am positive most of the negative comments are spawning from watching youtube videos and early beta impressions. That's really not enough to throw down a final judgement on the game. It's impossible for anyone to give a fair review on the game unless you got passed the "limited version" of the beta. So I could already read comments and assume they're trolling.
It's really too bad because an MMO of this theme and setting won't come by often and it's very rare. It's incredibly refreshing. The lore and atmosphere really pulls you in and the graphics are gorgeous. I like the gameplay a lot. I know there have been a lot of complaints about that. You almost have to appreciate the retro-modern feel of it. But there is nothing wrong with the animations at all. One of my pet peeves is bad animations. Previews really made it look bad but it isn't bad as it looks or what people may think it could be.
The Secret World isn't for everyone. It's only for those that appreciate the qualities I mentioned above. Like I've said before, I feel like this game was crafted for me. It's that game I've been waiting for a long time. You can tell the developers put a ton of work into the stories, lore, art design, the writing, and most importantly - bring a fresh new experience to the MMO scene. And it has done so incredibly well. For the most part, it has been a very smooth launch. Not many developers can brag about a smooth launch and walk away with 1+ million subscribers. Everyone I've come across in-game, not one has complained about the game in any way. Everyone is having fun on my server. They're all praising it for being that definitive game they've always been wanting. A game world worth logging in to play.
I respect everyone's opinion, but I could already see reading through the 4 pages that most, if not all haven't played the game. And no, I'm not talking about the beta. Beta wasn't anything to brag about. The final product is infinitely better. You probably won't take my word for it.. and that's fine because this probably wasn't for "you" anyways.

Thats a bold statement considering 90% of F2P MMOs are crap and also slightly off topic. We arent discussing the sub fee which is no big surprise at this point.
So far in TSW I completed a quest where I had to kill myself to talk with the ghost of a npc.
I had to use "fake" websites(created by Funcom) for information to access a computer.http://orochi-group.com/
Ive had to use a morse code translator to figure out the coordinates of where to go next.
I've even had to use the crafting system to take appart quest items and combine it with other objects ive found on the ground to read a map differently.
All those are only in the first 2 zones, and Im not even done with the 2nd.
Its stuff like that you wont find in other MMOs. Even if the game lasts me 2 months that will be my moneys worth to me.
As another poster said the combat is flat until you invest in a correct build. Here is how my combat works:
I have a sword and assualt rifle, each with different resources. Sword starts at full, I have to build rifle like combo points in WoW. I use 1 sword builder that has a increased chance to penetrate(games 2nd version of crit) and i do extra DMG and get HoTs when I penetrate(just sounds wrong). However because they use TWO SEPERATE resources i can then use TWO SEPERATE finishers. Combined with passives it can create for quite a interesting build.
tldr: Its more complex than you think and if you dont think so you probably only played beta or watched youtube vids/streams. Good job.

I would not say boring because as I mentioned in the post you quoted the 2 resource system and 2+ finishers make for exciting fights. Monthly fee is debatable. At one time some 12million people subbed for a P2P, seems worth it to me.
Offtopic: Ive played COUNTLESS F2P MMOs, If you go to MMOhut.com, I must of tried half the games on the list there. Even the "best" ones like LotRO, Runes of Magic, D&D, etc, I just cant make it more than a month or 2 with them, they get stale to me. On the contrast, I've played FFXI for 4yrs, WoW for 4yrs, Rift for half a year, SWOR for a few months(>.>; ) they hold my attention better than F2P. So IN MY OPINION, P2P is better for me and I will gladly pay my $15 a month if it doesnt bore me. Just another bill I pay as a part of being a adult.
edit: no smiley
that's beyond the point. it's not because most F2P MMOs suck that it justifies P2P games. it's not about the quality, it's about the policy in its fundamental levels. you paid for a game like you do with every other game. why are MMOs excused and allowed to charge you monthly for something you paid for, but literally every other game with an online component isn't? even if my most hyped game (see sig) had monthly fees, i'd not play it. hell, it's what kept me off WoW since launch, my refusal to say "oh ok, i guess you're a good game, so here's the price of a whole other game every month just so i can play you". pay to play is the plague of the MMO genre, hell i'd go as far as say it's the plague of gaming, and i'm glad that more and more developers are seeing that it's stupid and shouldn't be done.Offtopic: Ive played COUNTLESS F2P MMOs, If you go to MMOhut.com, I must of tried half the games on the list there. Really offtopic here. You pay for a persistent world. You pay to maintain servers, and GMs, and customer service. You pay for patches and bug fixes. You are more than welcome to dismiss my claims and say "You can get all those in F2P stuff!" and I am well aware of it. When I play a MMO and pay monthly I usually dont play other games. I would usually be so bored I'd be buying other games. So in essence by me paying $15 monthly I am saving where as I would be spending $20+ on a new game every month or 2.
In the end its your choice to not pay, Its mine to continue playing. One persons views on the internet is not going to influence me. Agree to disagree.
