Warhammer Online has been a 'fail' in retail for years now and it's still not F2P.

For most MMOs, combat is pretty much the entire focus of the game. You engage in combat to gain levels and loot to be better at combat, and you do that for years on end.

The Secret World isn't exactly like that. Combat is more of a means to an end here - a method of advancing the plot or uncovering more mysteries. Sure, it still offers dynamic-ish combat with in-depth build tweaking and loot customisation and whatnot (as expected of all MMOs), but there's more to the game than just the fighting.

The story, atmosphere, non-combat quests and mysteries are done well enough that they stand out on their own here, unlike any other MMO I've ever played.

As for the 'without levelling' thing, that's not an accurate way to describe the game. Loot definitely does have levels, tied to your character's skill points, and the game gets progressively harder as your progress (like with any MMO). Here though, there's less focus on grinding for levels - a lower-level character with a good build or a lot of skill can often be more useful in a dungeon than a character with better loot or skill points.

I'm more interested in this than GW2 tbh. And LotRO is doing very well too. What does 'failure as a retail game' even suggest if a game is more profitable than it was when you had to pay for it?

I guess it means GW 2 wouldn't be sustainable as a P2P game either because it launches as a B2P one. In other words, a failure.

The feedback the game gets in various forums and on gaming sites convinced me to buy the game, hopefully it arrives tomorrow. Especially since I keep hearing the combat is better now than it was in the beta.

I seriously doubt it will kill WoW. They said ToR would do that and it's losing subscribers on a daily basis which were already only a fraction of WoW's. Plus, the game looks dull and tedious considering the combat mechanics. I was hopeful for this one but I just don't think it's lived up to it's potential.

I agree with most of your posts Daniel, you are blunt and to the point. However, have you even tried it to be able to say its trash? I am a pretty jaded MMO vet and I am greatly enjoying it. I do not play trash.

We just had a 2 page discussion about this. We understand that the bane of your existence is monthly fees. Some of us do not mind that. Lets not revisit this.

Yes the beta, I saw some posts that say it changed dramatically, I wouldn't know, but based on the few (for a MMO) hours I spent on the beta, it was absolutely terrible. The MMO I liked the most and played by far the longest was WoW, nowadays I lost interest after about 6K hours, I've been looking for new MMOs ever since, some are terrible in everything, some are terrible at everything except having some decent gameplay, some are mediocre with no "selling point", and some have a decent and slightly interesting, different world, but the gameplay is absolutely terrible (this is Secret World for me, from the beta), all types always have something in common, they're a complete waste of time, they aren't exciting enough for me to play them and they aren't quality games. People always say "yeah well, it can't be polished, WoW was polished for 7 years", while I agree to a certain degree I prefer to continue sleeping in a modern bed, not on rocks with a few cavemen around.DanielDust

Then take this from someone in your situation as well. My playtime when I quit WoW was over 450 DAYS. I've been looking for a replacement since Rift came out last year. Most have been crap or games I just couldnt get in to. SWOR, and a plethra of "the best" F2P MMOs, but nothing could hold me like FFXI and WoW.

Saying that TSW has some stuff going for it. It has definitely improved since beta. I almost didnt buy it because i thought it was pretty bad in beta. I gave in because of the horror setting and unique Guild Wars like skill system.

While today I am greatly enjoying the game and strongly recommend it, in a month or 2 I might say it was ok after investing more time in it. It took me 3 months and 2 months, respectively, to figure out Rift and SWOR wasnt for me.

If I had a buddy key, i'd give you one.

For giggles I did google it, I found a lot of links to youtube videos and forums. Nothing from a developer of TSW or actual reputable game journalists.

[ Rift devs plainly came out and said it that Rift is a WoW killer. Ignoring the fact that it wasnt, the devs said it. Nowhere have I ever read TSW was a WoW killer. It will not kill WoW, that is not the point of it. It is too different and "difficult" to amass a "casual" following that WoW has. Using burden of proof it is YOUR responsibility to link it.
