Man, I purchased the game yesterday but sadly the patcher comes to a complete halt when I only have 409 mb remaining. I've tried restarting the patcher many times, restarting my computer, repairing broken data. I've read others have tried uninstaling the game but that doesn't seem to work either so I'm not going to try that and risk wasting my monthly download usage.

Anyone else encountered this problem with the Secret World patcher and have the solution? I recall Age of Conan had a awfully slow patcher. I may simply have to wait a little after some more patches.

I see. Thanks anyway :)

I reworded my google search quite a bit, and it seems like there is no EU/US split. Thank goodness for that.

Maroxad

Elann and I are on the RP Server if ur interested (Arcadia I think it's called). The friends list has a bug it seems though, or it could be just us. We added each other but it comes up as online when we are not and as different factions.

I see. I am not too interested in RP servers though, besides, it is way more fun to RP on normal servers. Just like it is way more fun to be dark side republic and light side imperial than the opposite alignment.

That said, thanks anyway.

We don't RP, I just normally do RP servers cause that's where the mature community people normally are in.

Also, I believe there are 2 chat channels available in RP, one for normal chat and another strictly only for RP. (could be wrong on that one)

Wish I had the free time to check this game out. The little time I could sink into it would not be worth the monthly fee. I'll have to play the long waiting game on this one reluctantly.

The patcher is REALLY slow. It's bandwidth is limited so it doesn't get over-run. First time it took me 2 hrs to patch. Saying that, I've installed the game at home and at work and it's patched fine both times. Maybe keep trying and see how it goes (leave it patching overnight).

I know what you mean. I barely get ANY gaming time during the week....and barely a few hours on the weekend. But I just said "I'll bite the bullet" and buy it....or else I can never get to play any of these games.

Not really. You have some starting areas and some dungeons which are instanced, as in you get the group and then for example ur transported by Helicopter to the Dungeon Area. But most of the world (where you do normal quests) is persistent....with day/night cycle and dynamic events. PS: I hate living in Australia sometimes....since when it's day here it's night in the game :(

I've been watching some things online and reading up a bit more on the game and it seems like it might be something I'd like. I certainly appreciate the non-fantasy setting but unfortunately, it doesn't seem like any of the stores around here have the game in stock. So much for the impulse buy.

Yeah, I know, I said I wasn't going to buy any new MMORPGs at release (in this thread, too) but, what can I say, I'm a sucker for the genre, especially when a developer is trying break away from the same old tired EQ formula.

Actually, believe it or not, when I first started playing the game and got to the first zone (Kingsmouth), I immediately thought "Hey, Elann and WildFlower would LOVE this game".

I emailed Elann and told him to get it ASAP and he was reluctant, but he went ahead anyway and is loving it.

I didn't email you cause I know ur a sucker for old RPGs, specially ones with D&D ruleset.... and ur not a huge fan of MMOs.

BUT, if u do decide to go for it.... forget about it as an MMO, but rather as a horror game set up in modern times with other people playing in ur faction and other factions.

The investigation quests are great..... I had to find a code for a device and it took me 30 minutes to finally find it (on a wall inside a church). Some other ones u have to actually go online (using the ingame web browser) and google information.

Now remember, it's been out only a week and it's an MMO, so some quests are broken, there are bugs etc. But for me personally it's been pretty smooth. I can log in and play anytime (no queues).

TIP: update ur video card driver before playing or else it hangs on the loading screen.

The patcher is unbearably slow. It worked fine for me though, it just took a long time cause its P2P download. Repairing it wouldnt work cause it would only attempt to repair it when you've finished downloading it. I would attempt to contact the live chat option in TSW account screen. They are fairly quick, i get a response within 5minutes.

Yes, good idea too. Try leaving it overnight, and if it still doesn't work...use the Live Chat. I got answered within 5 minutes too.

I hope you get it. I'm enjoying it so much.. it's unnerving how addictive it is, and not in a grindy-MMO kinda way. Like you mentioned, the setting and themes, the atmosphere, the wheel ability system is incredibly deep. First time in an MMO, where I pulled out a notebook and started pencil and paper builds. I can't even settle on my builds yet. I'm just going pure build until I decide to step up into the hybrid builds. And this is just the PVE. I haven't even touched the PVP yet.

Servers just went down for maintenance. Good to know Funcom is already addressing issues. I am in the 3rd zone of questing atm, Blue Mountains and the difficulty definitely ramped up. Mobs aggro much further, chase you much further, and spawn rate increased. You can just mow through a camp like you could in other MMOs, you have to take your time and be careful with pulls or you will get overrun.

I heard! :D I'm taking my time. One of my chars is ready for Blue Mountain (story mission wise), with QL5 gear, but I am stuck on my build. I'm making two decks for dungeons and solo/group quests. I got slaughtered by
Bogeyman
in the Savage Coast. And I would like to do some more Inferno runs.

Deciding whether I should go with:

1. Assault Rifle (support) + Blood or..... Assault Rifle (support) + Blades
2. Shotgun + Pistols or..... Shotgun/Elementalism
3. Fist + Chaos or.... Fist (pure build).

I also want to try a Fists + Blades build. I haven't really seen people go this route. I would like to build a Fists+Blades that has sustainable tanking. I am trying to make one healer, one tank, one straight up dps. Too many ways to do this!

I am currently Blades/AR. It solos really well but my build is pretty boring as I use Crimson Theater as a finisher and just spam my builder for blades as my main dmg. I am looking into dropping blades and picking up elemental/AR.

A tip for the fight you mentioned though, everyone of his skills can be avoided so its just knowing which one does what. The giant black hole looking one is what killed me a few times until I figured out it was a LoS move.

I am tempted to go back through savage coast to get more points, but everyone just keeps saying continue onwards cause points come much easier. IDK.

Also I really need to get into a Inferno group. I am almost full QL6 and havent gone. Getting into groups as a DPS is hard.

I am definitely interested in the game, how much space does it take up on your HDD?

Is it optimized for Quad core cpu? (Does it have better performance than SWTOR) Also is the sound broken.....? lol

I love the setting/theme the game is in, but I am very hesitant on yet another paid sub MMO.

I will prolly try a demo/trial if they ever get one out. IF I like it, I might see about getting the game.

How is the latency/lag? (one thing SWTOR was real good about)

It's one of the smoothest launches for an MMO, but it doesn't go without it's bugs and issues. Not sure how big it was exactly, I will have to confirm with you again.. but the download with locked server connection speed took about 3-4 hours to download with patch and updates. DX9 is optimized. I will give you my settings for best visual/performance. DX11 on the other hand, not optimized well. But on both, the GPU is running at 80-85% usage. Keep in mind that this game eats up about 1-1.5GB of vram.

The framerate in DX11 is very jumpy. It dips a lot. To be honest, the game looks basically the same on DX9, and you get a super smooth framerate at about 55-60fps, at all times without a noticeable visual difference. What's more important here is it's smoother in DX9. I didn't notice that much lag, although there is stuttering here and there... could have been the DX11 chewing apart my GPU.. but when I ran in DX9, everything seemed smooth. It's really too early to tell because they have done a couple maintenances already in the past 3 days. I will test it out some more.

I have a buddy key I could give you, but you can only play for 24 hours. I don't know if that's 24 hours played, or 24 hours with a timer. The sounds and music are absolutely wonderful. A bit of audio bugs here in there but they are frustrating at the moment.. I'm not sure if it has happened to many people though.

Cool sounds like something I should try, but keep your buddy key, it will be a while before I get around to trying it out, (maybe for the better, to give them time to work out some of the inevitable launch kinks) Maybe even further optimization would be done for dx11, also through newer drivers.

But thanks for the review.

^^ to add to Elann's post: Lag: haven't noticed any if there is some, and im in Australia where lag is always a problem. Bugs: haven't notices them myself but heard some missions are broken but they are patching it. Graphics: on DX11 some areas slow down, but what game doesn't on DX11 lol... I'm gonna try DX9 like Elann said since everyone says it looks the same.

The question is...where is all this going?

I would say that the only two interesting things about this MMO from what I've seen through several beta play-throughs are some of the quests and the theme that goes along with it. It appears that some of you are veterans and newcomers to the genre; both enjoying The Secret World. That's good. But for me I feel a bit stuck with MMORPGs.

Ultima Online, Everquest, and Asheron's Call simply felt like a privilege to play. That was definitely an exciting time. Then World of Warcraft came along and I was once eagered again. I've played almost every MMORPG and RIF T was the last game to keep me entertained somewhat. There really hasn't been anything to keep my excitement. To be honest I am done with the second generation of MMORPGs and I'm waiting for the third to emerge.

That's the current state I am in. Personally for me...is this game worth a go?

The more I read the better it sounds: Secret World to Have Monthly Updates. The last game (only game?) I played that did that was Asheron's Call which I ended up playing for nearly 6 years.

Now, if I could only find a retail copy withing 20 miles of my freakin' house. For a game that is published by EA you'd think I wouldn't be having this much trouble hunting down a copy. Best Buy, Gamestop, etc. don't seem to be carrying the game. It almost seems like EA wants this to fail...

INeoGen85

Wildflower above me provided a link, but that's the answer....Funcom has promised to keep adding monthly story-branches and new areas. Sort of an Alan Wake with constant DLC. @Wildflower: weird, here in my city (Australia) every shop has various copies (EB Games, JB Hifi, Dick Smith, Harvey Norman). If ur having too much trouble, just buy it online.

I'd be all over this if it were a singleplayer game:lol:

I'm waiting for it to go f2p or finally kill Funcom. I have a feeling the latter will happen before the first.

Why not try it then? You can easily play solo (I do most of the time). And why do u want it to kill Funcom if the did a good job with it? There should be more devs like them trying to be different.

Is there a free trial?

I don't want Funcom to die but I don't understand what keeps them alive when everything they made this decade was an expensive flop.

I believe they do have a buddy system in place. I think TSW launch was smooth enough for them and they can attempt to be consistent with the game in the future. That's a change of pace for them.

The question is with a game like Guild Wars 2 on the verge of releasing claiming to change the mold of many things(and re-introducing other elements); why should I play The Secret World?

From the big guy to the little guy I have heard almost the same thing across the board.

They have a buddy system but it's only for 24hrs (don't know if 24hrs straight or timer).

I haven't played the other Funcom games, but I can safely say The Secret World is a solid fun MMO, so I think Funcom deserves recognition on this title (specially with what they have planned for monthly updates).

As for GW2, I've played 2 Betas and even though the game is great, it's still mostly another fantasy MMO. It doesn't revolutionize everything like people expected. Saying that, I still have my CE Preorederd.

AND, TSW and GW2 are completely two different animals. TSW is modern setting, with story telling and atmosphere as the main attraction, it's not for everybody. They can safely co-exist in the market.

How is Transylvania? That's what I'm most curious about.

Age of Conan is good. I enjoyed the first trial it had in 2010 or whatever. Sometimes I really wish I could get into a MMO and stick with it, but alas. I can't.

"I really wish I could get into a MMO and stick with it, but alas. I can't." I'm the same, not because the MMO doesn't interest me, but because my life is so busy now that I have barely time to game. BUT, I just enjoy what I play when I'm playing an MMO. I don't worry about end-game, or raiding, or getting the best gear.... even if I just play 1 or 2 hours a week...I just enjoy THAT game session. Lots of people should learn to do this, instead of always focusing on the end instead of the journey. As for Transylvania, I cannot comment since I am still in Kingsmouth.....there is just so much to do that I could be here for the next year...lol

It doesn't really matter to me if I'm playing in a Stephen King novel verses a George Lucas film. I'm just trying to figure out who I should place my bet on?

The more I read the better it sounds: Secret World to Have Monthly Updates. The last game (only game?) I played that did that was Asheron's Call which I ended up playing for nearly 6 years.

Now, if I could only find a retail copy withing 20 miles of my freakin' house. For a game that is published by EA you'd think I wouldn't be having this much trouble hunting down a copy. Best Buy, Gamestop, etc. don't seem to be carrying the game. It almost seems like EA wants this to fail...

I hope alot of those plans don't take too long to release.

Guild Wars 2 is going to be a hit, there's no doubt about that. It's even F2P so you can easily buy it since it's a once off purchase. BUT, I recommend anyone with an interest in the occult, dark atmosphere, myths and horror themes to try The Secret World. SW might go F2P too in the future, since maintaining an MMO with subscription looks like impossible these days, but I don't care...means I won't have to pay monthly :)

I'd be all over this if it were a singleplayer game:lol:

I'm waiting for it to go f2p or finally kill Funcom. I have a feeling the latter will happen before the first.

Baranga

I highly doubt that would happen. F2P, maybe.. but it won't kill them. It's an excellent game but it's easy to say a game sucks when you haven't played it or given enough play-time into it.

I am positive this game can't be any worse than Warhammer Online, which I played for nearly a year into PVP endgame. And that game is still paid subscription. Like I said, I highly doubt your prediction.

You're right that it's published by EA games, but under its EA Partnership program. Although EA has no say so in their creative process and overall development of the game, they do control most of the marketing and publishing, at the same are cooperative in willing to work with Funcom. Crytek is another example of an EA Partnership program developer. If they took off the EA logo, I wouldn't even know it was published by them.. because this is truly a Funcom game, but better than everything they've ever done by ten folds. They addressed it on their website that retail copies are scarce and far and away; recommending digital copies obviously.

People waiting on their retail copies have received an extended access to the game for a few more days until they receive their copy of the game. Hence why EA published this under the partnership program after publishing SWTOR. Obviously, they have less faith in Funcom.. but look what happened. :P I think as things pick up, EA will do more with the marketing or at least distribution. I hope that people understand that this is a fully developed game by Funcom without any influence by EA.

Not many people RP "openly" because this game is structured on a single-server technology. Most people take it to groups or tell messages for RP. For the most part, it will feel like a "normal PVE" server. You're not going to get people in chat openly RP-ing while everyone else is discussing their build decks. :P RP servers are overall A LOT more friendly, and helpful than normal servers from my experience. There are older, mature players as well. Most people are well into their 20's, 30's, and even 40's. To me, as a person in their mid 20's, I find that a good thing. I can't stand people who are obnoxious, just to sound like they're funny. Or they love seeing themselves talk in chat. Anyways, that's a whole 'nother discussion. Arcadia is a great server. Thanks Felipe! :D

I dont care much for voice acting. But the rest of that is nice.

Oh yeah, and I hope that being european I can play with Americans. I wanna play with the rest of you guys.

Maroxad

I think theres only 1 EU server. I am on Grim and notice quite a few EU, Aussies, and Spanish guilds.

So does that mean I can log on US servers?

On Arcadia, there are EU players. Felipe is Aus so I'm sure there are Aus players as well. It's widespread because of the cross server tech. It's good for me because my week schedule is all over the place so I could game with pretty much everyone. :D

NeoGen85
I never played Ultima Online or Asheron's Call.. yes shoot me. But I did play Everquest, World of Warcraft Vanilla and TBC, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Guild Wars 1 (yeah I know not really but yeah..), and a bit of LOTRO, and the latest was SWTOR. So you could call me an MMO-veteran, if you must, or not. Oh, I played DAoC too! Anyways.. yeah I was sooo burnt out on MMO's, but I keep trying the ones I was interested in just to get that spark going again. All of failed to do so since WoW and Guild wars, which were very good, but still lacked something incredible. Then comes The Secret World, which I was initially excited about then.. I was turned off for some reason. But the setting, themes, and atmosphere reeled me back in.. and I took the bait (thanks to Felipe), and I'll never regret this purchase. TSW does everything so good, it hurts in a pleasurable way. lol. It's very much worth the go.

Go Funcom and TSW!

Oh, Felipe.. I did get a tell message from you once but by the time I saw the chat in my other chat box, you logged off. So it must be working now. Hopefully I'll see you online. Half the week, I'll probably be on, when you're on because I play late night. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, I'm gaming at pacific US time.

I didn't think EA had anything to do with the development of the game. My beef is with EA's distribution or should I say, lack thereof.

I live in suburban Detroit which isn't exactly the sticks and I can't locate a copy of a brand new PC game anywhere? Really? I have never had this problem before. Thankfully, Amazon is there to pick up the slack.

The patcher finally started working again last night and have been playing for around 5 hours now. So far I am really enjoying the game. Not like any other MMO I've played before. The combat is not anywhere near as bad as I was expecting. Granted it's not great but some people were making it sound abysmal.

I wanted to join the RP server 'Arcadia' I think it's called, but it was full at the time. Hopefully get in contact with some of you in game. Cheers for the thread Felip. :)

Uhhh, I don't know if it will be ur cup of tea Advid. From ur previous posts I see you concentrate a lot on end-game, combat and gear. The Secret World is not about this, it concentrates on Atmosphere, Story-Telling, Characters, Myths and Factions, all nicely tucked in a modern setting with no classes, no talent trees and quests that try to be different. Give it a go if u want anyway.

Yep Arcadia is where Elann and I are playing. (well, Elann....these days I try my best but I'm so busy). Glad to hear the patcher worked.... it's kind of buggy for me too, sometimes max speed sometimes just hangs there.

I have a couple of questions about this MMO, if you guys don't mind.

1. I've heard that the quests are top notch. Is there truth to this? Is the Secret World story based (This would be a BIGGG plus)

2. Lots of praise has been given to the atmosphere and the game world of The Secret World. I've been playing a bit of Vampire The Masqurade: Bloodlines. It seems like the game world is similar to this game, is that true?

1. Yep, most quests try to be different. Have a read through my prior posts on this topic where I explain how one of them works. I like also that some quests are not just about killing stuff.... but for example talking to people, finding clues, researching online (using the inbuilt browser), even exploring the world for supplies etc etc. The quests are what keeps me going, together with the great sound, atmosphere, graphics and story telling.

2. VERY similar to Bloodlines. Atmosphere wise anyway. In short, THIS is what MMOs should be about, IMMERSING you into another world. The one that did that prior was WoW, then LOTRO..... all the other ones I played just felt like a GAME, not a WORLD.... this one brings that spark back...and in horror mode.

I'm not going to buy it right now, as I'm being cautious with my purchases now. I'll wait for the free trial to come out, so I can make my own judgement. However, it seems like a great game.

WOW, logged in after a couple of days without gaming and my server is FULL. Looks like more people are subscribing. It's great though cause even if full, you can go in without queues. Also, put the game on DX9. It works perfect smooth with everything maxed and looks just as good. (and that's playing in Windowed Mode with a GTX 470 and Quad Q6600) Do not regret this purchase at all.
