No details on the beta test, for we are quite a bit out from wanting or needing to make those decisions. There are several ways we can go, and although I did try to wheedle info out of the co-founders, Mike and Jeff, about the beta... well, not exactly wheedle, but maybe wrangle? they said that it was too soon to make or announce a decision on that matter.

Canthan New Year

• Made preparations for the Canthan New Year's Festival, which begins at Noon Pacific (-8 GMT), February 8, 2008, and runs until Noon Pacific, February 11, 2008.

Party Animal Title Track

• Added the Party Animal title track and support for it in the Hall of Monuments. Players can gain points toward the Party Animal title by using various festive items, including Bottle Rockets, Champagne Poppers, Sparklers, Ghost-in-the-Boxes, Squash Serums, Snowman Summoners, Beetle Juice Tonics, Yuletide Tonics, and Transmogrifier Tonics.

Skill Updates

We will evaluate the following changes this week. Additional adjustments may be made during that time.

All

• Decreased the variance in trebuchet impacts in GvG by reducing the target deviation and increasing the area-of-effect.
• Health sacrifice now displays as a skill cost.

Victory or Death

• Victory or Death: increased the damage to 25%.
• NPCs receive an additional 5% damage bonus each minute after Victory or Death.
• Added "Victory is Ours," a new GvG feature that activates at the same time as Victory or Death, giving players on the team with the most NPCs a 15% damage increase.
• Archers now stand farther apart at Victory or Death.
• Trebuchets no longer work after Victory or Death.
• The Bodyguard and Guild Thief now receive a smaller damage bonus than other NPCs at Victory or Death.

Mesmer

• Power Leak: decreased target foe's Energy loss to 1..5.
• Clumsiness: increased casting time to 2 seconds; increased recharge time to 10 seconds; now affects adjacent foes.
• Ether Feast: increased healing to 20..50 Health per Energy lost by target.
• Hex Breaker: changed skill type from stance to skill.
• Ineptitude: decreased duration to 4 seconds.
• Wandering Eye: decreased duration to 4 seconds; increased casting time to 2 seconds, increased recharge time to 10 seconds; increased damage to 10..92.
• Drain Enchantment: decreased Energy cost to 5 Energy; decreased Energy gain to 8..13 Energy.

Necromancer

• Hexer's Vigor: decreased casting time to .25 seconds.
• Chilblains: increased number of enchantments removed to 1..2.
• Plague Touch: increased number of conditions transferred to 1..3.
• Blood is Power: decreased Energy cost to 1.
• Wallow's Bite: decreased Energy cost to 1.
• Touch of Agony: decreased Energy cost to 1.
• Dark Pact: decreased Energy cost to 1.

• Whirlwind/Teinai's Wind: decreased Energy cost to 5.
• Glyph of Energy: decreased recharge to 7 seconds.

Warrior

• Healing Signet: increased Health gain to 62..152.
• Lion's Comfort: increased healing to 40..100 Health; increased Health gain per Tactics rank to 7.

Ranger

• Troll Unguent: increased duration to 13 seconds.

Dervish

• Avatar of Grenth: duration increased to 10..90 seconds; functionality changed to: "For 10..90 seconds, you cannot be blocked by enchanted foes, and your attacks deal cold damage. This skill is disabled for 120 seconds."
• Mystic Regeneration: Health regeneration is now capped at 3 enchantments.
• Pious Assault: increased activation time to .75.

Paragon

• Mending Refrain: decreased Energy cost to 5; decreased Health regeneration to 2..3.
• Song of Restoration: increased healing to 45..90 Health.

Ritualist

• Protective Was Kaolai: decreased recharge to 15 seconds.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed a bug with a pathing issue in The Dragon's Lair outpost.
• Fixed a bug with a pathing issue in the Eastern Frontier.
• Burol Ironfist in Boreal Station will no longer display his Hero tutorial dialogue buttons when he is offering or rewarding his tutorial quest.
• Fixed a bug that caused the skill Meditation of the Reaper to not remove itself properly from Heroes.
• Fixed a bug that caused Devona to spawn in Pockmark Flats after the Replacement Healers quest had been completed.
• Heroes and henchmen will now properly target themselves with the skill Zealous Benediction.
• Heroes and henchmen will now properly target themselves with the skill Dismiss Condition.
• Players will not die because of life loss from a vampiric weapon during the Rollerbeetle Racing festival game.
• Fixed a bug that caused a Hero to cancel and then re-activate a skill if manually ordered to use it.

Miscellaneous

• Corrected the crafting costs on two of the Elite Canthan Masks sold by armorer Koumei on the Divine Path.
• Changed the item boxes in Rollerbeetle Racing to only be collectible once per player.
• Added additional base defenders to the Alliance Battles.
• The Xunlai Tournament House NPC now offers prizes for January and can be found in the Great Temple of Balthazar, Lion's Arch, Kaineng Center, and Kamadan.

No Release date yet, but it may be out late 2008 or early 2009. I'm guessing it will prolly be early 2009 or sometime in 2009.

How we deal with real-money traders

To help protect the Guild Wars community from the problems caused by real-money trading, we aggressively pursue these companies and try to stop them from abusing our players and the game. Listed below are some of the measures we take to protect Guild Wars players from the abuses of real-money trading companies.

• We identify and ban accounts-typically more than 5,000 per week-being used by real-money trading companies.
  
• We attempt to identify stolen accounts and return them to their rightful owners.
  
• Our GMs monitor the game around the clock so they can remove botters and spammers from the game, often within hours of account creation.
  
• When we detect a large amount of abuse from a single Internet address (IP address), we block that address from accessing the game.
  
• We block open proxies (open Internet servers which can relay traffic from anywhere in the world) from accessing the game.
  
• We identify players who purchase gold from real-money trading companies, and we suspend their accounts and remove the purchased gold. We also encourage these players to seek restitution from their credit card company. Real-money trading companies are not legally authorized to sell Guild Wars gold. They don't own the gold - ArenaNet does. Credit card companies know this, so buyers of gold can generally call their credit card companies and get the charges removed.

Remember, if you purchase gold for real-world money, you are funding these companies and supporting their behavior. These companies cause real grief to you and your fellow players on a daily basis. If you don't like them spamming, botting, hacking, and stealing accounts, then don't buy their gold.

The only problem with Factions is that there aren't a whole lot of people in the later missions.

OK remember in DOA (Domain of Anguish (elite mission) there was a snake you could click/talk to in order to verify that everyone met the requirement to do the final mission???

Guild Wars Nightfall is amazing although I'm new to the game. Only recieved the game last week and I've been on it most of the time. Although I can't wait for Guild Wars 2. Just wondering what other Guild Wars game is good? Guild Wars? Guild Wars Factions? Guild Wars Prophecies?haunted_baka

Many believe Prophecies (First Chapter) to be the best. Or if you just want more goodness, just go with EOTN (GW:EN).

Ritualists can be absolutely beasts when properly combined with the monk, They can become a real task to drop, and virtually an invaluable asset in PVE and PVP situations.

The best SINS IMO are either quick Spikers or interrupt artists, I just have issues with some of the weapons available, like Shiro's blades, or Shrouded Oni's. But, I must agree the Rit and SIN do have some good farming potential.

I'm thinking of reinstalling Guild Wars tonight, I always end up coming back to it but not having the Eye of the North expansion makes me reluctant to install it again.

Edit: I see they've added some rewards for finishing Prophecies campaign now?

Not having EOTN is not the end all, for me it was a pretty good expansion for PVE, and it really added some differing experiences with your PVE character builds, including new armors, and heroes which would be an incentive to get EotN, but the expansion was not built to inhibit those who didn't have the expansion.

I found that just going through the native campaign and developing your character hopefully completion enriched your character far more than some of the EotN run through. Besides the heroes in my case became more of a journey through micromanagement, and became a hinderance. Nothing can take the place of a good human player.

When will there be a beta?

Although we publically alpha- and beta-tested the original Guild Wars while it was still in early development, with Guild Wars 2 we will commence beta testing closer to the game's release. With that in mind, we will not start beta testing in 2008 as we had originally planned. Guild Wars 2 is a very large and ambitious game, and Guild Wars players rightfully have very high expectations of its quality. We want players to be absolutely blown away by the game the first time they experience it.

Typically a mic is not required, but of course it can be helpful to be able to just speak, instead of having to type words, especially in the middle of the action.

Most groups just want you to be on a vent or teamspeak server, and able to hear whats going on. Vent and teamspeak are free to download, easy to use, and work pretty good. I prefer vent though.

Finally nerfed that rubbish that is Ursan and in the process buffed almost every elite to insane levels.

Worth reinstalling to see what effects it is having.
