Loving it =D , The no towns thing didnt effect me much and I really enjoy the fact that the story is continuely progressing . Plenty of cutscenes :P
But the fact that there are A LOT of save points makes it seem too "Safe" . I loved how it was more challenging before =P
The summoning vehicle sounds pretty lame actually. I didn't know about it until it was mentioned here, and it just seems like they're cutting more into sci-fi stuff now with that. One of the problems I have with the overall atmosphere game is it just seems too futuristic. But that's just something I don't find particularly appealing anyways. Only problem that I can really see is that the fantasy element might be lost a little bit, i.e. the summoning vehicle doohicky. Oh and by the way, I don't think anyone is condemning this game SOLELY based on the lack of towns. That's just ONE of the many RPG elements missing from the game.frostybanana
As much as i adore the game , the whole "Shiva twins" Thing that turns into a motorcycle isn't cool. I agree with the whole futuristic thing , the game doesn't seem so Japanese too. It's like one of the many japanese franchises like Silent Hill (Unrelated but kinda similar changes generally) , which are being westernized (Not that it's a bad thing , it's just really different than it used to be)
However , I love the game but wish was more like the previous ones =P

Lawl, I'm sorry, but turning into a motorcycle is downright childish. Sounds like a middle-schooler thought it up. I remember the summoning sequences of FFX .. They were epic compared to these :'S .

Lot of talk about towns.
I haven't cared about towns since FFVI (III for NA). The steampunk atmosphere of Narshe, the ragged and occupied South Figaro, the shady atmosphere of Zozo. All of the towns had their own personalities, you really remembered them when you moved on with the story (and, in FFVI's case, revisited them in the second half where they had completely changed, which was awesome.)
FFVII, VIII, and IX's towns were fine and all, but forgettable. X's Luca was pretty awesome, but deceptively small, with nothing really to do except serve as a Blitzball hub (which didn't really matter as you could access Blitzball from most save spheres.) FFXII's world was massive, but if you notice, had very few actual towns, which I quite liked. The massive hubs of Bhujerba and Rabanastre were great, then there was the brief visit to Archadia, but that was really it, besides a few small and forgettable villages. Point is, towns have slowly been phased out as the series has matured. While I do hope that Square Enix will really revisit its routes and make an FF with IV, V, and VI's atmosphere, I welcome the phasing out of towns with open arms. They've been mostly used as rest spots anyways, and haven't really played a pivotal part of the story since the SNES days. Sure, you start in Midgar in VII, have to deal withDeling City and Estharin VIII, and revisit Lindblum many times in IX, they never felt like a part of the story as the SNES towns did. Same goes with X, you basically just pass through as you progress through your pilgrimage, and FFXII's few locations, while more relevant than the others, weren't exactly centered around the story. Though I really liked Bhujerba.
So I'm not too bothered by the omission of towns in FFXIII. I'm sure there are many NPC's to interact with in Cocoon, and that's good enough for me. I've never been the kind of guy to speak with every single NPC anyways. So I suppose it's just a personal preference, but I can't see how people justify condemning the game (not accusing anyone in this thread of doing that) just because of the lack of towns. Or the linearity, as FFX was one of the best in the series, yet was as linear as it gets. It's gonna be awesome, let's just bask in its awesomeness.

I enjoyed FFXII so much! I really don't know what all the hatin' was all about. I put about 140 hours in over the span of 3 games. There were only a couple of things that I didn't like about the game. The license system just didn't work for me. And I also didn't enjoy the city of Archades (don't ask). But these two minor opinionated setbacks are far outweighed by what the game accomplished. The graphics are just amazing for a PS2 game. And it had Balthier.
Now back on topic. I really enjoyed the linearity of FFX, and I think this will really help FFXIII. FFX was the game that got me started in the series, and have since gone back and played FFVII, which I also enjoyed once I got past the outdated graphics. If a game is too open-world-oriented, I find it tough for the game to hook me initially. This occurred to me when I started playing Fallout 3. However, after giving the game another chance, it became my favorite game (soon to change after the release of this game!). Open-world is a bit of a double-edged sword: the game sacrifices depth for more options.
Just wanna be clear, I loved FFXII. The battle system, the license system, the side quests, everything. As such, it had a very open ended feel, inspired by MMO's. I'm happy they're taking a different direction with FFXIII, going back to a more character driven story based on emotional linearity. Such was FFX, and it was fantastic. And let's not all forget that it's Final Fantasy tradition to almost completely change everything from title to title. SE hasn't let me down yet when it comes to FF, I really don't see the need to question them because of a few questionable choices, like some are doing.
Friday at Noon eastern the reviews will be all over the net as the embargo breaks.Dracula68thats great to hear :D

Lawl, I'm sorry, but turning into a motorcycle is downright childish. Sounds like a middle-schooler thought it up. Summon Transformers. But Sazh's turning into a car is fine, or you just forgot that one? And besides, the deal with Eidolons this time around is the ability to use them as vehicles in some fashion. Odin's horse, for example. What the hell is Shiva gonna do? Piggyback Snow everywhere? Book it down the highway, slim blue legs a blur as she keeps up with Sazh's car and Lightning's horse? And if they just provided an ice trail for him to glide along, people would complain it was way too Marvel. And the reason for sisters is people would then complain that just one little Shiva ain't gonna provide enough mass to turn into a motorcycle to carry Snow, hence sisters. See where I'm going with this? People were gonna complain either way, they just went with the lesser of evils.
I think the transformation aspect of the Eidolons is pretty awesome, myself. Nice to see Shiva, a classic character of the Final Fantasy summoning world to be a little badass for a change.

Yeah...I think all of the vehicle summoning dealy is stupid. The whole game might be good, who knows, but I do know that whole aspect is reaching, and as I said before, that's an idea a child would come up with. Not to say all of the other FFs didn't have some sort of thing that's kinda juvenile, but honestly this seems the dumbest of the bunch. Seems to me that their whole development team was down for taking stupid ideas, because, and I'll laugh about this every time, they named their main character Lightning. Wow. So needless to say, I don't particularly like the development so far, but I didn't really like Tidus before FF10. I still kinda hate him, but I love that game, so I'll reserve complete judgment after the credits. And I've always thought Shiva was badass the way she was :P[QUOTE="Dracula68"]Friday at Noon eastern the reviews will be all over the net as the embargo breaks.yokofox33
I'll be looking forward to GS's review then! I honestly believe GS will score it at an 8.5, but nothing will stop me from enjoying this game immensely.
I don't want to give the impression that GS will or won't have a review tomorrow as I don't deal with the review team at all. Anyway, it seems US sites are rating it higher than UK right now. I just got 2 more reviews added a few minutes ago--100 PS3 from PTOM and 90 for that other system from OXMDamn I am in love this this international trailer.
Oh and I have another noob question  Is the combat free moving? I know that you are still choosing attacks but do you actually move the player? Kinda like Crisis Core?
Ok good. I didn't want that :DNaw, you can't move around on the battle field. They had that initially (as well as switching between characters), but they said even the developers had a hard time keeping track of everything in addition to moving around to enemies, so they simplified it.
naaros
Awww man I read this elsewhere but I was hoping I misread it or didn't understand. So you cant switch the party leader mid battle? So whoever you control during the initiation of combat you are stuck with? I heard you get game over when the party leader dies I was gonna cheat and switch to another character when things start to go bad :)Naw, you can't move around on the battle field. They had that initially (as well as switching between characters), but they said even the developers had a hard time keeping track of everything in addition to moving around to enemies, so they simplified it.

Yah, can't switch character after battle starts, and if your character dies, it's "Game over." You can't switch to the other characters, but you can indirectly control them kinda with the Paradigm Shift (switching their roles on the fly). So if you need healing, switch a character to Medic. Need a tank, switch to Sentinel, etc etc.

I'm glad someone thinks this way. I believe that just because it will be different than what we are used to doesn't mean that it will be bad. Au contraire, I think Square Enix will make it work. As someone else mentioned in the thread earlier, it wouldn't be SE if they didn't change everything from release to release while still delivering excellent game after excellent game.
Lucky man right here...woo FINALLY i got my retail copy today, english version of course :D The long wait has ended

Wow, excellent score! I'm absolutely dying in anticipation now. Tuesday can't come soon enough. I want me some linear JRPGing :D8.4 from IGN AU.

5/10 from Edge. :?
The game is already available in my country, but I've gotta wait for the collector's edition.

That's a solid unbiased review. I really feel like they mapped the game out well.
[QUOTE="Leon_Kennedy1"]I know they are harsh on games with their score but a 5 for a Finally Fantasy game just amazes me.......I 100% agree on that review so far.5/10 from Edge. :?

10 hours in. Just a warning. the ff franchise has completely died. Its no longer an FF JRPG. 10 hours in, and i have not come across into a town where i can explore and talk to people. Or go into different shops and buy stuff. So i went and done some research reading reviews just to see if i would actually come across to a town sometime soon. Only to find out most of them mentioned, "throughout the game you will NOT come across into a town, No mini game". And you will only control ONE character while in combat throughout the whole game. Where is the tactics in that?. Although ive heard later later in the game you will get to swap the leader.. but WTF! This is like FF12 but much much worse. Im so angry, its pissing me off. i wont be suprise if gs gives this game a 6 or 7 maybe 8 if luck is on its side.
Im not going to stop playing now, im going to continue playing it and finish it off so i can get my money of out it
EDIT: ok i wont completely just note negatives, there are some positives. square-enix has focus more in story telling. the story is somewhat ok, not the best. I like seeing alot of cutscene which delievers on that matter
After reading GS's review I'm actually excited for this game. Too bad I need to use my boyfriends PS3, meaning I don't get preference. I now might buy a PS3 with my tax money. :Plinkoot98It would be a worth investment. Why don't I walk you to the recommendation thread and show you what the PS3s got.

I'm really disapointed with those low review ratings =S .
People ! The game is AMAZING ! They keep comparing it's features with previous Final Fantasy games , forgetting that many of those features are not possible to implement considering the unbelievably beautiful graphics.
The game deserves a 9/10 in my opinion.

There are a few towns, but no interactive NPCs or anything cool about them, although from what I've seen the environment is gorgeous.
