Playable Tails? I did not know this. No, for both versions only Retro and Modern Sonic are playable.
However, as for characters that appear in the story, only the HD version has Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Rouge, Espio, Blaze, Vector, and Charmy appear.

The SonicStadium member who got a copy of the game early did videos of all the rivals, bosses, Casino Night, Emerald Coast, Water Palace, and Tropical Resort.
Here's what I noticed.

I wanted to keep myself from knowing who the modern boss in the 3DS version would be after spoiling myself already..but when snooping around the Sonic Wiki,I saw a pic that showed who it was
You'll also get to see the levels in a different light as Sonic rescues his captured friends, who can then join him in replays of the levels. Whether you're a longstanding fan of Sonic, or you're new to his fast-paced world, Sonic Generations on Nintendo 3DS is the perfect way to experience Sonic gaming in fifth gear. - Multi-Card Play offers a two-player Versus Mode so you can take on a friend to earn status points and compete to see who's the fastest hedgehog on the block. - Receive new unlockable content including new missions via StreetPass as you interact with other players when you're out and about - Use Play Coins to unlock whole new challenges - Legendary levels from Sonic's history come alive in glorious stereoscopic 3D
Well I was right,it seems as if Sega lied.
and I swear,we need to make a Sonic Generations Spoiler thread,so people don't spoil the inclusion of
Super Sonic,Classic Eggman,Classic Sonic Homing attack,Modern Sonic's tragic death at the true 100% ending,or Hyper Sonic.
Though I have to wait until Christmas to play, I did decide to watch some of the cutscenes and can I say that ESPIO'S NEW VOICE IS COMPLETE AND UTTER WIN!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UopExt7SPSU&feature=related
Seriously I have no problem seeing Espio in more games if he's going to have that most awesome voice. Espio never had a terrible voice but seriously whoever is doing his voice now, please Sega do not let this guy go.
Well I did listen to the rest of the new voices. They sounded pretty bad in Free Riders but that game was early on when they just started so I let it go as they needed time to get the feel of the characters and make them their own. We all heard the first clips of Sonic's new voice for that roller coaster and how bad it was but improved greatly by Colors.
Amy: For some reason she sounds like Minnie Mouse now. Also kind of surprising they didn't include a retro Amy (then again no Sonic CD levels) where modern Amy would say "Green sweater? When did I think that was ever in fashion?" Same with retro Knuckles.
Knuckles: Honestly still like his Adventure voice the best.
Cream: Not quite as squeaky as before which is better.
Espio: WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN
Vector: About the same as before. At least he didn't ask to find the computer room
Charmy: Not nearly as ear splitting as his voice back in Shadow's game. Still annoyingly high pitched but doesn't make your ears bleed anymore.
Blaze: Blaze never had a bad voice though given the choice and they gave her more of the stoic personality like Espio, her voice is well done as well.
Rouge: Not a big fan of the newer voice. Somehow the deeper 4Kids voice suited her better.
Didn't find sound bytes for Silver or Shadow yet. Though Shadow's voice in Free Riders had him going from Edward Cullen to Dracula and sadly that's NOT an improvement.

I looked on tssznews.com and found a poll asking whether or not a watered down version of Sonic Generations should be on Wii,while it wasn't half,42% said yes...
Anyway,Game Informer gave it a 5.75,and they gave some valid points...like Classic's homing attack.

In the 3DS version, Retro Sonic's homing attack is required to get through other half of the levels.Â
On the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, will everything be 2D? It looks like it, even Modern Sonic's stages are 95% 2D.......ShadowofSonicThe entire game is 2D. A few parts of Modern Sonic's stages are made to look 3D, but that's a lot more like how they pulled the fake-3D in Sonic Rush Adventure.
Okay so I picked up the 3DS version, and I've played the first section of the game, so here's a summary of my experience so far:
Green Hill is a really short stage, unfortunately, both versions of Sonic can clear their stage regularly in under a minute. As stated before, Modern Sonic plays in 2D like CIassic does, which makes it confusing since you might pull what I did and start sliding as Modern trying to do a Spin Dash. Also, CIassic Sonic as previously stated does gain a homing attack, immediately following the Big Arm boss.
On that note, each Boss Gate contains both its rival battle and the core boss, so you play them back to back rather than find on the hubworld, which is entirely menu-based and not explorable at all. Like in the HD version you when you unlock zones you can choose to play their acts in whatever order you choose, and upon clearing the entire zone, you unlock its Special Stage (there's no in-level ring requirement or anything like that, you just clear the zone), which plays exactly like Heroes'. Truth be told I'm not a big Heroes fan, but the Special Stage so far is one of my favorite moments of the game, it's just a blast. Now, it presents itself in 3D, however Sonic is automatically running so you only need to steer him left and right like in Sonic 2's Special Stage.
Level design I have mixed reactions for, and so far it's one of the biggest deciding factors in how I will be rating this one. CIassic Sonic's iterations of Green Hill, Casino Night, and Mushroom Hill are carbon copies of their original forms from the Genesis games. This is a double-edged sword for me personally because it means Dimps was lazy and decided to let nostalgia do their work for them. And sadly enough, these visually refreshed versions of the stages just aren't as exciting as they were back on the Genesis. Still fun, though.
Now, Modern Sonic, in the HD version I couldn't help but praise his gameplay, and here it's still good, but I have a hard time enjoying him as much as I'd like, the level design especially for Casino Night and Mushroom Hill just is flatout quirky, it's almost like Dimps was trying to shoehorn the idea that Sonic 4's level design was awesome into this game, and I'm still as turned off but some of the setpiece decisions. Casino Night in particular was a pain and while parts of it were enjoyable, other parts just screamed bad level design. To top that all off, Modern Sonic's acts feel a little lifeless, they just don't feel as full of activity like the Sonic Rush series did. Now, I think this is more a fault of the absolute focus on the boost function, because while it was there in the Rush series, it was balanced with great platforming. Here it's just BOOST BOOST BOOST BOOST BOOST and then jump here and there and that's about it.
Overall, the entirety of the gameplay is fun, but not exciting, I was expecting more out of the premier development team behind Sonic's portable adventures. But hopefully my opinion of the game will improve by the time the game is done.
On the note of music and graphics, music is great, and I definitely think it's one of the better aspects of the game, and visually it is quite pleasing. I like how Modern Sonic will oftentimes pull a Donkey Kong Country Returns and jump to the background for the next part of the level, it's a pretty nice addition.
Anyway, expect a full review of the 3DS version probably this weekend. I wanna finish this game up and I have work Thursday and Friday, so I'm not entirely sure I'll have time to get the review done, I know I'll have the game done though. If you guys have questions on anything else in the game, like how cutscenes play out, missions, all that fun stuff, please do ask, I'll definitely answer them for you as soon as I see them.
And Colors was around the time Sonic Team started outshining Dimps.
Honestly in this age, Dimps sucks.

Yeah something started to happen. Dimps used to be the ones we wanted to take over all Sonic game design and have Sege toss out Sonic Team but after doing so good with the Rush games, now it's like they lost that spark or perhaps now they just pale in comparison to what the Sonic Team can do now that they got their act together and are making good games again.
