Is there any doubt Mike Trout's the AL MVP at this point? With Hamilton having fallen off the map, and Cano cooling off considerably in the power department, he's first i WAR, OPS, OPS+ and stolen bases among position players with a .351/.408/.600 line. Take his defensive prowess into account, and I think we're easily looking at the best player in baseball.

Apparently. the Braves just traded for Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson. Would be interesting to see who they gave up, I'll reserve judgement till after that is announced.

Maybe, but honestly right now who could a rational person justify a vote for?
Cano? Over .100 points behind Trout in OPS.
Hamilton? Under .200 for two months straight.
Ortiz? A DH who's going to miss a good number of games this year.
Cabrera? Maybe, he is having a typical Miguel Cabera season, but it's still not up to Trout's level, and he's not a defensive 'plus' either.
Trumbo? An inferior player on his own team.
A pitcher? Unless one rides ahot streak to the end of the season, there's not really one I think would get any first place votes at the moment.

No doubt in my mind that he is. No one even close right now in my mind. Wonder if he loses votes cause he didn't come up for almost a month. But it really shouldn't be a problem.

It appears more and more that Garza will be traded. Reds are interested but doubtful. Toronto has asked for medical records and to perform a physical exam..so take that for what you want. Rangers also looking. at him.

The injury isn't scaring a couple teams off. He'll only miss 6-7 days apparently Dempster and Soriano to the Dodgers is being talked about and gaining steam. Cubs would take all the money for Soriano I would think.

The Braves pickup of Maholm is a great one. His last 6 starts, he's allowed 5 ER and has a 1.00 ERA since June 29th, 2nd best in baseball to Zimmerman. And the Cubs got a solid return. Vizcaino is only 21 and good stuff. Has a chance to be pretty good, not great though. Injuries have derailed him.

Travis Snider has been traded.

For Brad Lincoln? Are you serious? I guess his stats are good but still..

EDIT: His stats away from PNC are bad and as a starter, they're even worse. Yippie....

I hope this is part of something more, somehow.

Another edit: Eric Thames traded to, to Seattle. Alright, NOW I feel that something else is coming. That's two OF's

Haha dude, you answered your own question! They aren't rational people lol. Baseball voters do whatever the fudge they want because they know their name won't get out. I posted that last night, but I just watched Quick Pitch on MLBN and they literally just brought up how some voters won't vote for him and Billy Ripken RIPPED into those idiots, and he's right, they are the same douches who don't vote for players their first time up because they don't want them to get 100% of the vote. I WISH baseball showed the votes from each individual voters, so we can hold them accountable for being IDIOTS.

Victorino to the Dodgers. Giants counter with Pence (which isn't done just yet). DBacks apperenty up to something huge, and Garza/Justin Upton might be involved.

Cliff Lee?

Philly has said they've cut off all trade talks involving him.

And Upton won't be involved in any move for Garza. They want a big time starter though, and Garza seems like the only one. Texas and Toronto still very interested...saw his side session yesterday.

Dempster will accept a trade to the Yankees.

Yeah lol, I mean, it's not bad, but I was just expecting more. I guess I've been spoiled. I just keep thinking back to 06 when they made a ton of moves (Abreu, Chacon etc). Plus, Qualls was gone anyway since Joba is coming back. Decent, just boring. Headley would've been badass.

Headley would have cost a hell of a lot more. Their price was absurdly high. At least your team did SOMETHING though. All the rumors around the Jays and nothing happened. I should learn to expect that by now.

IDK man, I'd be happy. I just don't see the Jays making the playoffs with all their injuries. To give up prospects would not have been good for their long term future. I'd consider it a blessing in disguise. Even with a second wild card, It'd be tough for them to get to the playoffs with the angels, A's, white sox, tigers, orioles, etc.

Oh, I don't think we make it either. Even if healthy, it was very difficult. So I wouldn't give up 2, 3 or 4 prospects for a guy like Johnson. And I would not go anywhere near Dempster or Greinke. I think we keep going with what we have (which is what we did, for now), and only made trades from a position of strength, to upgrade what needed upgrading. Not selling the farm for a chance at a 1 game playoff.

I wanted a guy like Garza cause he might be kind of cheap, or cheaper than a guy like Grienke or Lee, and he's under control, something Dempster isn't, and has pitched well in the AL East. Or Upton cause...well, who wouldn't want him? Expensive, but would make us a lot better for the future. I just hope Rogers puts money in and we can go out and sign a big name with the confidence that we can make noise next year, once healthy (except Drabek).

Hamilton/Upton-Rasmus-Bautista.....I can dream.

I expect a trade more than anything, especially for a starter...the offense looks set. Probably see Arencibia moved, cause d'Arneud is ready. And probably Escobar. Don't like any of the names on the FA market.

Being a Toronto sports fan is depressing :(

Saving $$$, give Dom Brown a chance, and his value was going down. Got SF #2 prospect out of it, a fantastic catcher. They needed something like that with Ruiz being a 35 year old, FA next year. Now I don't understand why Hamels resigned. He's probably looking at the team now and thinking the same thing.

Saving $$$ for what? They are a win now team. Pence is a good player now, we don't know what Brown is. If anything, Brown should take Victorino's spot. Rollins is dead, Utley is dead, Victorino is gone and Pence too. What the hell is going on in Philadelphia.

For the future, to lock up some of this young talent they're acquiring. They wanted to cut payroll and get younger, and they did that. It isn't what fans want, but it's necessary. They have one of the worst farm system in baseball, since they gutted it for Doc, Lee, Pence and Oswalt. They need some kind of talent. Plus, they have to see what they have in Brown...and he isn't a CF like Victorino, so he wouldn't have taken his spot. Clearly, by selling, they aren't a win now team. Not anymore. Decimated my injuries, and they're old. Like you said, some of them are just...dead. I like the pitching staff, but Doc isn't getting younger and has had a bad year, and could be a FA after next year. Lee has been..alright, the offense has hurt him, but still. I think he'll be moved cause his AAV is one of the highest (tied with Hamles). And he'll be 34 next month.

Yeah, I know that is part of it, but there still werent any exciting players even available. People were talking about Josh Johnson as being some sort of superstar pitcher, when he's not nor has he ever been. Upton rumored, Hanley shockingly traded, and Greinke who I knew wasn't going to be a yankee were the only exciting moments. It really makes you think just how awesome the 2008 deadline was with all those insane deals like Sabathia, Manny, Griffey, Tex. The Ichiro deal was actually awesome, I forgot to mention that. But when Hunter Pence and Ryan Dempster are the big trades on the last day, then that is just boring. I just love big trades lol.

I don't understand the Pence move, either. I get the Victorino trade, he's at the end of his prime, enters free agency this winter, and the Dodgers were desperate for a leadoff guy. But Pence? Pence is 29. He's still in his prime, and isn't eligible for free agency until 2014. Pence is exactly the sort of hitter you want to keep around to support the Halladay/Lee/Hamels combo that they apparently insist on maintaining.

On July 24th, they gave Hamels the second richest contract ever for a pitcher. That was them saying "we're in it to win it; we're going to make this thing work". On July 31st, they traded away arguably their best hitter. That was them saying "we give up; time to rebuild". How does a team make such a dramatic change in philosophy in only 7 days?

EDIT: and the Phillies gave up a LOT to land Pence in the first place - 4 prospects, 2 of whom have already earned invites to the All-Star Futures Game.

Vizcaino's fastball can hit 100, but he might've had a future in the bullpen after his injury (think Medlen, though Medlen pitched well last night in his first start in about 2 years). I think we have to see Maholm pitch at least once in a Braves uniform before even thinking about how good this trade was.

Oh, and Hanson is on the DL now.

Apperenty there was a trade discussed with the Mets and Marlins that would have been John Buck and Heath Bell for Jason Bay.

If there is still interest in a week or two, I wonder if that could happen this month. Don't see anyone claiming any of those players.

Jason Bay is awful, but it would at least get the Marlins out of Bell's contract and give us options to upgrade at catcher.

Right, I understand Vizcaino's upside. I would be more down on the trade if Vizcaino was projected as a Top of the rotation starter, what I've heard was that he was projected as a reliever. Granted, a very good reliever. He also is coming off of a Tommy John Surgery, so there is a bit of mystery of his future. Can it still reach 100 after the surgery? My main point was that I like it better than Delgado/Dempster deal. Maholm is pitching a lot closer to his career numbers than Dempster is. Dempster really is due for regression, I think. I can't say how much, of course. I do like the acquisition of Reed Johnson. Can give all 3 outfielders (and Chipper Jones), a day off while also giving a decent bench bat that the Braves don't have (Hinske is done, Diaz is on the DL, and is only doing well against LHP, Francisco played well as a starter not as a pinch hitter, and David Ross can't really be used in fear of McCann being injured) As you said, have to see how Maholm does before actually declaring it a good or bad trade. Hanson being on the DL might not necessarily be a bad thing. He's been struggling since the ASG. Venters has looked better after returning from the DL. So hopefully, the trade helps for the immediate future. Random question just looking at the Braves roster, Fish I believe was a rule V draftee, but has been on the DL for the whole year. Would the player have to be on the majors next year?

If he's still injured, the Braves get to hold onto him. I don't really know more than that.

Apperenty there was a trade discussed with the Mets and Marlins that would have been John Buck and Heath Bell for Jason Bay.

If there is still interest in a week or two, I wonder if that could happen this month. Don't see anyone claiming any of those players.

yokofox33

Jason Bay is awful, but it would at least get the Marlins out of Bell's contract and give us options to upgrade at catcher.

Bay's contract might be even worse. For the next 2 season it's 16 mil. and a 17 mil. club option with a very large buyout. But I guess it's better than 3 years of Bell.

I guess he relishes being the best player on a suck ass team. Once Stanton gets back he'll go back to sidekick role and stink up the joint.

Adding to my wardrobe, what ya think JB? That's one sweet logo. I also like the retro Brewers caps since i discovered the glove is made of an "M" and a "B" :o but it might have some Bud Selig taint on it so probably not.........right now i'm looking at a $50 Brooklyn Dodgers pinstripe cap. What's up with this guy? http://www.chadmoriyama.com/2012/08/gifcap-munenori-kawasaki-the-best-fake-stolen-base-attempt-and-running-backwards/ lol

We should get a new poll up. MVP, or Cy Young maybe.

If the season ended today, both MVP awards are no-brainers. Trout and McCutchen. It wouldn't be a question of "will they win?"... it'd be a question of "will they win unanimously?"

CY will be closer. At this stage, I'm thinking Weaver and Dickey.

I doubt he'll win, but for the N.L, assuming he finishes strong, Kimbrel will be in the discussion for Cy Young, or at least should be. Kid has been lights out all year.

It'd be kinda cool if Johnny Cueto could finish strong and take the NL CY. Of all the teams that were around in 1956 (the year they first started giving out the CY), Cincinnati is the only one remaining to have never won.
