Huge savings? I don't think so. In the long term, console users still save more money than PC users. To prove this point, lets do the math.

All prices are in USD by the way, but I'll use the 15 unit difference you say you have over there in the UK.

Lets assume you pay $1200 for your PC to start out with. Now, lets also assume you buy 30 games over the course of the next five years, each costing $45 on average. That's $1350. In total, you're paying $2550

Now for a console user, let's assume that they buy the $350 Premium Xbox 360. Now, in the interest of keeping variables the same, we'll assume that they also buy 30 games at $60 a piece. That's $1800. Altogether, that's $2150. $400 less than what the PC user paid.

Now I didn't add in Xbox Live fees or upgrades for the PC in the interest of keeping things simple. But sincethe average PC owner I talk to says they upgrade about once every 18 months to 2 years, this probably works out better for your argument anyways.

So where are these "huge savings" you speak of?

The_Game21x

30 games over the life time of a console, wow looks like 360 doesn't have many games. as far a pc games are concerned i generally buy 12-18 games each year. and oh, you forgot to add fee of xbox live

You beat it and have never played it again? I guess that lends credence to the PC version of the game and all the mods that you will be able to download to update the game.

mikasa

Or renting it.

Why the hell would you rent bioshock anyway? it has 3 different endings and is one of the best games ever made. Bioshock is probably the best god damn game on the 360 and you just want to rent it.

You must no be into gaming as much as you make out.....:|

Either that or you are seriously lacking in funds. Or 360 game prices just put you off. Here in the uk bioshock was £15 cheaper to pre-order.

A lot of people only want to rent it. It's a single player story driven game. So what it has 3 endings. With it only taking around 10-20 hours to finish it...it will only take 30 hours on average to play it twice. Plus there will be other games that come out after that....that will take my time and will be fresh. Halo3, Starcraft 2 (someday). Resident Evil 5, UT3, etc...

Ok then i will jusy buy it , plat for a month, then trade it in and lose like, a tenner.

The whole renting rubbish just doesnt work. People need to BUY games to keep the industry alive. if its such a valid arguement the gaming industry would be dead on its heels from people just rentiong games.

besides its about as valid as me saying, "pfft i just borrow all my games for free of mates, who i know will have the game".

This thread and your arguement are total rubbish.

Yep that's what I used to do on a PC as well. Spend a lot of money buying games that I never finished because they got boring so I had to move on to the next game.. How many hours of gameplay do you get out of each game?

[QUOTE="jt8b2z"]20 games a year over the course of 5 years ( a consoles life)

300x5= £1500.

£1500 + £300 = £1800

enough to buy two high end gaming pc's in that 5 years.

Besides the fact i need a powerful cpu and ram for my degree course ( music, large music samples e.t.c.)

So really for my needs i need only factor in the graphics card.

Pc gaming is not only better but cheaper, for me at least.

Who buys 20 console games/year? Unless you're a full time gamer and have no life/job. Plus are there even 20 good games worth buying each year? Renting is where it is at for the smart consumer. Only buy the ones that you will play time and time again.

But apparantly you find time tofinish a 20 hour game in a few days. Alot people only get the chance to play a game an hour, if that a day. :|

Wow you guys are stretching today. You're missing the very first post in this topic. That won't work with Bioshock's DRM.

http://www.twitchguru.com/2007/08/27/bioshock_drm/ -> read this and there's a lot of reasons but it boils down to DRM being installed on your machine and not being able to play a legally owned copy. And once installed it's near impossible for the generic PC user to unisntall the DRM.

Another reason is you can rent it on the 360 instead of needing to pay full price on the PC. After all it only has single player and a couple different endings. How many times can you read the same book and still be excited about reading it again. Reminds me of condemned. Fantastic game everyone said buy it! I did. beat it. Loved it. Haven't touched it again.

So PC has better graphics (if you have a rig that can handle it), but you have to install Sony owned DRM to play it. And you can only install it a few times before you can't install it anymore.

mikasa

Sorry, but this FAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing more needs to be said.

I never really got those "achievements" do you get anything apart from points? Do you really need a special "achievements" function to get the most out of your games? Or do you continue playing a game even though you don't like for those achievements?

I know bloody well what a DRM is. You can totally switch out HDDs and have the game totally precached onto the machine. Or you know what? I'll just borrow someone's steam account who has the game already installed.

OMG, this thread is stupid. Right, Ken Levine said simply uninstalling the game will remove one license and add back to the other ones. We have MODS, better graphics, faster load times, and the ability to change preformance settings for lower end pcs. So plz, go have fun with the 3 rings of death and scratched discs.

Actually achievements when done RIGHT, make a game within a game. It does give some replayability to some games if you haven't got all the achievements. Or it makes you do things you didn't think possible or even think to do. Like in DOA3...you have to beat all the characters in a certain amount of time to get an achievement. It gives you a goal and reward for achieving it. Or on crackdown see how long you can juggle a car in the air. It just adds some more fun to the game.

Many achievements are bogus...Like madden score 2 touchdowns (or whatever it is). But some are cool even on madden like an 80 yard pass.

LOL! You think setting lower specs is a good thing! that's an advantage of consoles, you can just play the game as it was designed and not worry about getting the most out of it. Should you turn down AA or some other setting to get the best picture/playback.

Oh ya, read the article that uninstall thing doesn't always work.

No doubt many do that. I don't. I only play games I want to play and do the achievements I find interesting or challenging (but doable).

[QUOTE="muscleserge"]What if, your 360 gets the Rings of death after playing Bioshock, or scratches the disk?jt8b2z

What if, you have to buy a +1500 gaming computer to play a $60 game? 360 is only $400.

PC equivalent in power to the 360 = 630 give or take 30. More expensive? Yes. Better investment? Heck yes.

Not to mention PC games are $50, not $60. I have a 360, too. People simply need to realize that high-end PCs are significantly more capable than consoles, period, and in a variety of ways. It's just a fact. That's why they're more expensive, but it's also why they're well worth it.

here in the uk they ar £15 cheaper than new console games.

gives me a huge saving over the years. enough to upgrade ALOT ;)

You buy 20+ games a year? :? Uh, okay...whatever floats your boat.

But I can assure you the average gamer does not buy 20 games a year. I'm willing to bet that at least 80% of SW buys less than that many games per year.

And wait a minute, what are those figures you're touting? Are those upgrade costs or what? And over here in the US, $900 is not going to get you a really high end machine so I dont know where the "two high end PC's" came from...

[QUOTE="jt8b2z"][QUOTE="mikasa"][QUOTE="jt8b2z"][QUOTE="mikasa"][QUOTE="jt8b2z"]20 games a year over the course of 5 years ( a consoles life)

300x5= £1500.

£1500 + £300 = £1800

enough to buy two high end gaming pc's in that 5 years.

Besides the fact i need a powerful cpu and ram for my degree course ( music, large music samples e.t.c.)

So really for my needs i need only factor in the graphics card.

Pc gaming is not only better but cheaper, for me at least.

mikasa

Who buys 20 console games/year? Unless you're a full time gamer and have no life/job. Plus are there even 20 good games worth buying each year? Renting is where it is at for the smart consumer. Only buy the ones that you will play time and time again.

But apparantly you find time tofinish a 20 hour game in a few days. Alot people only get the chance to play a game an hour, if that a day. :|

Who said I complete a 20 hour game in a few days? A weekend I can get 10 to 12 hours in if a game is great and I plan it. But I often take about 1 month to get a 20 hours in.

so how many times will you have to rent bioshock then :|

Once. I knew you would ask that.

There are many many people who simply couldnt sit and play a game for 20 hours in a few days. NOt just out of simply wanting to do something other than sit on front of a screen but also they may, you know, have other commitments. This is why people buy games, so they can enjoy it over a long period, not jut rush it. Also so they have the oppurtunity to play it again whenever they want.

20 games a year over the course of 5 years ( a consoles life)

300x5= £1500.

£900 = $1800

20 games doesnt seem unreasonable....Especially seen as teh oc has had 42 AAE in the last 2 years.....let alone the AAA's.

[QUOTE="_Pedro_"]

so there is a limit to how many points you can get for each game? I have a feeling a lot of people are playing games they don't like just to get those achievements :P

Deihmos

Does that bother how for some reason?

No, it's really microsofts way of using obsession to their advantage. I believe most 360 gamers won't be obsessed by achievements and merely see this as an extra, but I have a feeling that achievement hunters are really being milked by microsoft here.

It reminds me of what EA did with BF2.

If you prefer the pc over consoles, get the pc version

If you prefer consoles over the pc, get the console version

That's all it boils down to. They're both great games, so stop trying to say that the other version is crap because it doesn't have mods, or if you can't rent it.

It really is that simple. Other then not being able to play it on more then 2 computers I have had no problems with the game. I currently have windows XP on one HDD and Vista on another both on the same PC. Sure I had to uninstall the game off of two of my other computers to do this, but it was not a big deal and in no way actually effected my in game experience. Maybe I don't have those problems because I have it on steam.

$4...never said that. I've been saying $7. But I actually get it for $1.37 for about 1 month. Blockbuster is awesome. They don't have late fees. You can keep the game for around a month (Might be longer) and only pay $1.37 restocking fee. The only issue is the good games are hard to come by at bb as everyone is doing that.

Which does not = a 360 and is not a fair comparison to begin with. Irrelevant.

Be careful trying to discuss things with vandal. he'll make things up claim things as common knowledge, but when asked to put up or shut up...he just changes the point. Well actually he finally did shut up on calling him out on Internet gaming cafes being able to play Bioshock PC for $10 unlimited --> which is pretty much a complete fabrication from everything I've seen.

I never made that claim, and you're refusing to admit you're wrong. Look, I never mean't 10 dollars as a verbatim thing here. Can you not realize my implied meanings? In order to play Bioshock as a rental, you need the system, which costs 350 dollars. That gives you quite a bit of leeway to work with. Even if its not 10 dollars, as I showed with LPC, you can EASILY spend less than 400 dollars playing Bioshock or any other PC game at an internet gaming cafe ( conceivablly)

But the only link you gave shows that you can ONLY play Bioshock on teh 360 at internet cafes. Show me one where you can play it on the PC for about $10...then you'd have a point. but until then you've proven my point. Besides if leaving your house to play a single player game isn't a good experience for me, but if I wanted to I could only do it on the 360 as well. But even if you do find iton the PC, all you have proven is that the PC Bioshock and 360 Bioshock are the same cost at internet cafes (assuming you can find one). And that's not what most people want to do...they want to play in their house.

But prove me wrong. show Bioshock rental for $10/month on PC at home or internet cafe.

That's what they want you to think. But you get like 3 weeks AFTER the due date. so it ends up being about 1 month. They don't advertise that as they know they are getting hurt by that policy, however, they need to compete with the mail rentals and stuff...so they had to.

How many times do I have to say this? Not everything is on the internet hoss. My link clearly showed the FISCAL side of my point. Its not much of a stretch to say that an internet gaming cafe with Bioshock. And once again you're still focusing on this "10 dollars" crap. I will repeat this ONE MORE TIME. I said, "You don't undestand the underlying themes behind what I'm saying. You need a 360 to play the rental. Thats 400 dollars to play Bioshock on the 360. That gives me a lot of leeway." Even if it wasn't 10 dollars, you could EASILY find an internet gaming cafe where you could play and beat Bioshosck for less than 400 dollars.

Actually you get 30 days AFTER the due date to return the game! So you can play for 35 days for the rental fee + 1.25.

For me I get one free rental/month, so I pay 1.25 (1.37 with tax) to play Bioshock for 35 days! Beat that.

nope you get 8 days after due date

3. What if I forget to bring back a movie or game? Won't you charge me something at some point?
A: If you still have a movie or game eight ( 8 ) days after the due date shown on your receipt, we will convert your rental to a sale. The movie or game will be sold to you at the selling price in effect at the time of the rental, which is either the retail price, or, when available, the previously rented product price, less the initial rental fee you paid.
