I loved it, Bioshock is a thinking man's game without being overly self-important.
Would certainly pay $30 for it.

I loved the hell out of it. Great story, great gameplay, amazing atmosphere, great acting and sound direction. I think people were just upset that it's closer to a traditional fps than a fps/rpg like Bioshock 1. I think it's better for it though, I hated how messy the shooting mechanics were in the first, and how bullet spongey all the enemies were. There's also the whole last act of the first game which would have been better having not existed at all.
Shooters these days just suck in general. Because of Consoles really, everyone knows it. Console gamers refuse to admit it.
After all the hype wore off (I was giving it a 10/10 at first), it's still an amazing game.
I'd give it a 9.0. The story and presentation are amazing, the graphics are great, but the gameplay is good but not great.
I'm in my 2nd play through! Trying to get some stuff that I missed.
Yes definitely worth it!
Expect to get mind phucked, though!Â
The atmosphere of the game is amazing. Gameplay is decently good.
The worst part is you spend all this time upgrading weapons that don't show up in certain sections or even the end of the game. Didn't upgrade your sniper? Well you're boned. Gee game that's for telling me how to play you. Bread_or_Decide
Didn't upgrade a single weapon ;) and played on the hardest difficulty.
Metro: Last Light was overall a better game, and by far. And this is coming from someone who is a System Shock fanatic (as evidenced by his nickname)!Salt_The_Fries
I didn't read your wall of text but I agree with this, Last Light was definitely a better game than Bioshock Infinite.Â

Bad as in good or bad as in awful lol?
It's poorly designed shit.Shooters these days just suck in general. Because of Consoles really, everyone knows it. Console gamers refuse to admit it.

Or, more appropriately...PC (only) gamers refuse to acknowledge that gamers of all types can have opinions and preferences of all types.
Because: ignorant.
it doesn't touch the original in ANY aspect. it's a good game, but not even close to the legendary status of the original.Â
It's a bad game. SAGE_OF_FIRE
And its a very poorly written one. This game is shockingly poorly written for a Bioshock game, and drones only like it because the plot twist is "cool".
Laughably underdeveloped supporting cast, millions of handwaves when true depth is needed, Elizabeth's character development is absolutely forced through, laughable presentation of social issues, horrible plot holes, and the stories themes are so broken. Its a shame because that team has so much writing talent, but the ego of Ken Levine got in the way.
With the magnificent writer of Bioshock 2 Minerva's Den on the team, why do the supporting characters suck? Nevermind the writer of Tomb Raider also being on the team.....
It doesn't even touch the far better written Bioshock 2 as well.it doesn't touch the original in ANY aspect. it's a good game, but not even close to the legendary status of the original.Â

This, by far.It was better than I expected. Which is to say I enjoyed playing it, and the narrative side was interesting more often than not.
They're drawing pretty near to making a game that deserves the praise Bioshock was given.
get it... it was worth the price of admission at $60.... more than worth it at $30, imo.
I still prefer the first game though.
The game was still great and worth it but it still disappointed me. After all the hype and talk about the suposedly "mind-blowing" ending it left a sour taste in my mouth. The twist of the 1st BioShock was way better than this. I also prefered Rapture to Columbia. Rapture was creepy and melancholic. Columbia was both bright and disturbing... still a great game though and the gameplay mechanics, at least, are highly improved over the 1st two games

To those that played it, worth the hype?
edit: the game is 50% off that's why I'm asking

bought it for $30. love it. no regrets whatsoever.
I bough it for $5 so hah.
Awesome first playthrough and the story is engaging throughout but on the second playthrough the limited gameplays elements start to wear thin. I played it on Hard first and then made it about halfway through 1999 Mode before I got bored of the combat and moved onto another game.

the jokes not on me. Â if i knew bioshock infinite was as great as i was, i wouldve paid the full 60
Game is totally sweet. It's a shame that you can only play it for the first time once. Can't wait for the story DLC. The arena mode DLC that came out a bit ago is decent fun, and gives you a reason to keep playing after finishing the campaign, but it's pretty much meh. Game is more about story and setting than anything else.Â
It is THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE ENTIRE GENERATION FOR ME. Not only it made the encounters with enemies in BioShock 1 and 2 look like Rainbow Six Vegas and made you miss Big Daddies or Big Sisters, because the variety was hugely lacking, but the world itself was actually pretty empty, the exploration was very, very boring. The immersion wasn't there, you couldn't interact with anybody, and after the initial encounter with racist autochtons, you just couldn't help but feel disappointed you won't be engage in city life anymore. There was only one big sandbox-like level which was Memorial Gardens and its vicinity as opposed to BioShock 1 and 2 which had their entire worlds build in semi-sandbox way! There were a lot more intermissions and intersections, though but I really didn't appreciate very straightforward enemy encounters, which were clearly marked and intended for run-and-gun gameplay a'la Gears of War. I know they wanted to streamline the flow of the game, but it just didn't work out. Or maybe I have brain! I loved the level in prison, it reminded me of the one with ghosts in Thief: Deadyl Shadows, but it was too short! The game needed a lot more variety like this. While the character dynamic between Booker and Elizabeth was perfectly fine and really mature, her presence in the gameplay department was lacking. The supposed innovations in infusions and gear just didn't work. Infusions barely influenced the flow of the game and gear had too many random characteristic to be useful. Additionally, too many weapons and vigors which were too akin to each other killed it for me. Even the art-style which was meant to reflect secession was generic could've used some additional touches and inspiration, such as from Czech Republic and Prague which features amazing buildings in this style. The storyline and the universe were amazing, though, maybe even best in the series. The game itself didn't touch upon some ideological concepts unrelated to your character like in BioShock 1 for example, but to abstract concepts directly related to you, such as clinging to the present, the inability to accept that everything around you is going to die...The fact that your emotions such as love wither with age and you cannot help it. But also the fact that the reality after your death isn't that bad once you let go your preconceived notions about it. I also liked the fact that the beginning of the game tied nicely with the end with a nice twist. It was like Inception mixed with Cloud Atlas but more profound. It's just a huge shame the story and the universe weren't framed within interesting gameplay.Salt_The_Fries
Nice, so did you have the feeling of walking through an empty outdoor movie set a lot of the times? From what I've read so far I am better of getting the original BioShock, I'm a newb to the series.
I have noticed something....this game in its middle rips off of Fable III....wow....Daisy and Fink are basically ripoffs of Page and Reaver in Fable III respectively. Fink is basically a complete Reaver clone, and a far inferior character to what Reaver was.texasgoldrush

I'd give the first bioshock a runthrough, pretty sure you can pick it up for dirt cheap now, Â Bioshock Infinite is a total change in the series for those us coming from system shock 2, bioshock, etc. Â It's streamlined to the point I feel it really hurts the game because the gameplay there just isn't strong enough to hold your attention.
It's freaking pitiful how much a downgrade it is for the series.  But then again if you are willing to overlook the boring gameplay for a fairly well told story, you might not be as bothered by the design decisions the game takes as some of  us have been.
I'd still say to give Bioshock your first playthrough.

You know I am right....lets see an angry black woman revolutionary and a cruel industrialist who murders and abuses his workers. Nevermind Fink's personality and views are basically the same as Reaver's.
