I'm aware the 360 install base in the UK exceeds the PS3's, and the 360 continues to outsell the PS3. But an earlier post indicated that for Europe as a whole, including the UK, the PS3's hardware marketshare, since its launch, has consistently exceeded the 360's. You asked where this info was from, it's from a Nintendo sourced chart.

The PS3 is still 50 GBP or roughly 80 USD more expensive than the equivalent 360 Elite in the UK, so the UK sales come as no surprise.

okay, in Europe the ps3 might have the edge, but I don't think by THAT much. Europe has always been Sony's land, but this gen, even if they're leading, they're actually failing. I'm italian and I know that people have Sony in mind when you talk about games. But if you ask me, this gen Sony's being a big failure, considering that it struggles to come on top, despite it's big popularity as a brand. The xbox on the other hand was an unknwon thing last gen, but with the xbox 360 things have changed even in a Sony territory. So, clearly Sony did it wrong this gen and the price-cut+slim helped, but not like they had wished, for sure.italygamer

The PS3, while a good gaming console, has been poorly managed and marketed until lately. I wouldn't call it a failure, but I wouldn't call it a success (as yet). It had the curse of high expectations, due to a decade of dominance.

The 360 is undoubtedly a success in comparison to its predecessor. But whether this will translate into the 8th gen is anyone's guess.

Wow the PS3 number really aren't as great as I expected considering the fact that they were "selling" the PS3s bundled with Sony TVs. Really I mean giving away PS3s with the TV purchase, but for accounting purposes they are considered sold, and the price adjusted into the total price. That had to account for quite a few thousand sold. Heck that's how I got my Slim.

I guess January's numbers will be the true test, since all the bundles are gone, and things are back to normal. It's just pure sales. If the PS3 can continue to beat the 360 in January then I'd say Sony has done good. I sort of expect the sales to go back to only a few thousand a part in Jan. Not sure who will be on top, but either way neither one will be close to the Wii.

This is more to do with Bluray finally catching on than anything.

the ps3 outselling the 360 isnt that big of a deal. everyone knows microsoft isnt just going to sit around and let that happen. they have some good games on the way. im guessing gears of war 3 is about to be announced this spring, and im guessing we are gonna start seeing a price drop again from microsoft. how could anyone pass up a 149.99 arcade unit? cause im guessing thats about to happen. hell, i seen the arcade unit on amazon the other day for 174.99 fora few days.

MS have a lot of options. They can drop the price further and still make profit, SONY don't have this option as they're losing money on each slim sold. They can throw a Gears of War at people, with huge advertising, or, and this is what i hope, they actually decide to fund some exclusive games that showcase the 360's power, and attempt to bring in an audience other then FPS fans.

SONY have been working the "power" angle since release, always trying to prove the PS3 is the better console by funding talented devs, and the creation of inhouse engines. MS haven't had to do any of this in order to sell units, however with the PS3 catching up, they may need to invest.

PS3 already lost even if gets to second place it spent the whole gen fighting with 360 when last gen it was in Wii's spot

Let's not exaggerate. While the controls aren't great, they are not unplayable. Beside the game is good and has appeal to both casuals and core gamers.

Will Sony's PS3 department suddenly go from the red to the green financially? Will Sony stop having to provide major supplementation of the PS3s line-up? Will Cell start being easy to program for?

What exactly is the significance of PS3 sold units exceeding 360 sold units? Is Sony now making a profit on those sold units; or are they still making a $40 loss on every one sold?

PS3 spent over three years in 3rd place and fans have downplayed the significance of that position the whole time. What about the moment 360 enters that spot that is suddenly going to cause a major event? Will being in 3rd place suddenly matter when it is 360 and not PS3 in it?
