They know most of their fans are dweebs with little money. So they take their money with their left hand while shaking their hand saying we're sorry with their left.

Truth_Hurts_U

Yeah... I don't get why they keep making more content if they don't like people getting charged for it?

All they see is $$$ signs.

Erm, they did it with the PC, even held Map Making tournements for its user base giving tons of money and gaming systems away, getting ideas from the public was good and EPIC was already good at doing that.

But ofcourse, theyre now consolized and corrput my M$, Xbox360 -.- grats for killing one of the greatest development team's soul -.-

[QUOTE="thirstychainsaw"]If Epic cares so much about gamers they should pay for their own servers and release the content for free as well as having dedicated servers for Gears and fix the damn bullet lag. Microsoft also should stop being so damn greedy and give me those damn maps for free.makingmusic476

THey can't do that. All Xbox 360 games are forced to conform to the XBL standards of online play. Hence, only p2p servers, DLC through the XBL Store, etc.

This one of the pluses of Sony going with the non-unified architecture of the PSN, similar to pc online. Devs can do whatever they want with their games for online play/features.

Yes they could, EA runs their own servers. And charging for DLC isn't part of it either, its the publisher that decides on the cost of DLC *cough*horse armour*cough*.

What about Sega and the others? Sega cut online from the PS3 version of VT3 and Activision cut online from the PS3 version at least one of its games, IIRC.

Huh, I thought that p2p was a standard of XBl. Well, guess i'm wrong.

It is, and that's exactly one of the reasons online is so easy on the 360. Devs don't have to worry about online costs. With the PS3 model, the dev has to foot the bill for its servers and bandwidth. Sony is doing it to tweak Microsoft's nose and sell its PS3. EA does it because it has strong sponsorship, sports contracts, and a PC history.

Please bring it to PS3 PLZ! :P Gears is amazing and I want to play it on my PS3 :P

But seriously now, I've always been interested in Gears of War, I'm one the few non-360 owners who have actually liked and played this game and I've been dying to get that game

Just because the other 2 or 3 posts in this thread apparently aren't enough to get it through some peoples heads:

MS owns the rights to the first 2 GeoW titles, its not coming to the PS3 until at least (if ever) GeoW 3.

HuusAsking

They own the right to publish it. It can be taken away if Epic funds to publish it on its own.

Microsoft is also part-owner of Gears of War's intellectual property. It was part of the agreement to let Microsoft publish and advertise the game.

Change the name, and make a new game that is loosley based on the series out of spite, and then make it PS3 exclusive, lol. That would rub salt in the wound.

Those contests were probably sponsored. Sponsorship is tougher to get with console online. Sony isn't doing so well two generations running.

The statements about cost have certainly won them my respect. Why shouldn't developers receive a certain portion of resell revenue anyways? I can tell you for a fact that all used products are ripping you off, we spend $1-12 on most things and sell them for $5-40 where I work.

Stores could easily give up a dollar of used product revenue.

Who says they had to release it on XBL? OXM gave away free Oblivion content and they plan even more free content in the future. Why not make a new edition of Gears and have all that content?

We shall see what they have in store for PS3 soon enough. I bet they charge for there content.

Owning the IP is akin to holding a patent. Even derivative works need Microsoft's OK, and if you make it too close without the OK, you can get sued for unlawful use of someone else's IP.

Do you happen to work in one of those stores? Do you know how much the overhead costs are at those stores? The costs to pay the leases, buy and maintain your sales and advertising equipment, keep up your stock, install and maintain security, etc.? What about your subsidized deals?

Yes, you are right. I was more or less just being sarcastic, because I think that it would be hilarious seeing a Gears Spin off on the PS3 by the same devs, lol. Nothing can stop them from making a similar, maybe even better new IP for the PS3 out of spite though.

Regardless, if its true there is finally some proof, and will "Lemmings" please accept the fact that the other 3 system owners agree that thier strangleholding gaming for crappy little profits.

That source is about as credible as TeamXBOX to me, yet lemmings use it all the time as "Proof" so anything said by lemmings on this post is merely void to me in regards to sources and damage control.

It is but some developers/publishers use dedicated servers, obviously games like FFXI and Huxley aren't going to work P2P and because EA probably has a s***load of servers sitting around anyway they figure they might as well use them. The advantage of P2P is that the community can never die like it can for console games that run on dedicated servers.

Honestly, I would be happy if games just cost 40 dollars instead of 60 or 70 like they do in Canada. I remember a time when that happened, about 2 console generations ago or so games were that cheap. I would not be suprised in the least if Mark Rein decided to have the plug pulled on the 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 or if Gears of War 2 went PS3 exclusive, that could really hurt Microsoft. Although its not suprising really, charging gamers to play P2P games that are supposed to be played on a server and then the extra cash for maps is rediculous and no one should have to suffer through it, Microsoft doing so just proves they are grasping for extra unnecessary cash to make up for the huge losses on their two consoles which thus far have not had a huge amount of success (compared to past console generations at least).

VoodooHak

Maybe they are losing money on console production, however they can still regain it back with strong game sales and things like extra controllers, plus the XBL fee which in truth so far has payed for nothing except going right back into Microsoft's pocket. Since Microsoft isnt using dedicated servers for pretty much any of their games, they are charging users for basically nothing. Unreal Tournament 3 will be P2P just like Gears of War, since you have to host a game on your server unless you are using one of the dedicated servers that Epic will host (they did that with UT2k4, I dont see why they wouldnt do it again).

Do you happen to work in one of those stores? Do you know how much the overhead costs are at those stores? The costs to pay the leases, buy and maintain your sales and advertising equipment, keep up your stock, install and maintain security, etc.? What about your subsidized deals?HuusAsking

I know that our profit margins are very healthy. We only made in the hundreds of millions last year.

I distinctly remember Cliffy bragging that they cost MS over a billion because they pushed for more RAM.

And... Isn't it reasonable to think that profiteering involves some type of profit? Last time I heard, MS is still losing money on the 360.

Unreal Tournament 3 will be P2P just like Gears of War, since you have to host a game on your server unless you are using one of the dedicated servers that Epic will host (they did that with UT2k4, I dont see why they wouldnt do it again).

actually that way microsoft doesnt lose money on hosting there own servers like sony is doing when making there online free and hosting there games

Who cares? Im backing sony on that one.

[QUOTE="DSgamer64"]Honestly, I would be happy if games just cost 40 dollars instead of 60 or 70 like they do in Canada. Although its not suprising really, charging gamers to play P2P games that are supposed to be played on a server and then the extra cash for maps is rediculous and no one should have to suffer through it, Microsoft doing so just proves they are grasping for extra unnecessary cash to make up for the huge losses on their two consoles which thus far have not had a huge amount of success (compared to past console generations at least).ParadiddleFill

I started reading you post but then when i got to the part where you said the 360 hasent been a success i stoped reading it. How can you say the 360 doesnt measure in success with past consoles when it has only been out like what a year and a half

Compared to past Sony or Nintendo consoles, sales have been mediocre by comparison. I am pretty sure within the first year and a half the PS1 and PS2 both broke 20 million units. Console sales will be much slower for the 360 and PS3 this generation because they are expensive. The original Xbox was the most expensive console on the market when it launched, and it lost the console generation to an inferior system, the same thing right now is holding true for Sony with the PS3. The most expensive system will wind up losing (unless Sony is willing to drop the price of it every year which would no doubt start getting more Sony fans back on the bandwagon).

I wonder if the relationship is really falling apart or this is just a lot of guff. Gears was impressive and a big seller but its not the end of the world if they lose it.

It won't happen because of contracts... but thank god a few companies still have morals. Microsoft's true colors really come out as soon as they have a solid base to exploit..... imagine how bad it will be if they have no competition from Sony. And I fully admit Gears is a good game.... not nearly as good as it is hyped as and the multiplayer sucks, but still very good regardless.

You're taking this out of context.  M$ wanted to go with 256MB RAM.  Cliffy convinced them that 512 is the minimum needed to do great games and give the leap users are expecting.  Cliffy was right.  Yes it cost Microsoft money but in the long wrong it has paid off and I'm sure M$ agrees.

PS3_3DO

Sure it could.  All they'd have to do is drop the textures a bit and reduce the draw distance.  And drop all the rumble features.  It wouldn't be as good, but it could do it and if you never saw the 360 version you'd be happy with it.

XBL Gold subscriptions are going toward things like

  • Infrastructure that allows the community to self-govern:
    • Gamer zone
    • Rep
    • Prefer/avoid
    • Feedback
    • Acvite monitoring of feedback
  • Matchmaking that takes that all into account
  • Functional cross-game invite system that brings you straight into a friend's session
  • Closed, secure network that actively checks for modded consoles
  • Additionally, for ALL users, Connectivity to the web. I like being able to log into my account on xbox.com to check my messages and see what my friends are up to
  • MS has dedicated resources whose job is to specifically connect with the community
  • The support they give to fan sites through their Community Developer, MVP and Ambassador program

So... no, it's not all just going back into their pockets.  Even then, MS is still losing money on the 360.  How is this profiteering again?

And yes, they can regain some of their losses by strong game sales.  Sales that come from games with prices consistent with the competition.

Of course, having to spend less money at the cash registers is a great thing.  Free is even better than that.  But let's be realistic here.  If Epic wanted to work on their terms, they should've had the foresight to negotiate a better contract with MS.

BTW, I'm glad that Epic is refusing their cut of any money made from DLC... or they're donating all the proceeds to charity.... right?  Aren't they?
