God of War sells over 3.1m units in first 3 days; Phil Spencer : "SP games don’t have the same impact as before"

They last said 30 million for Steam sales, but recently announced 40 Million total (PC+Xbox)...so like 35 Million on PC?

... a Viral game that is already 2 years old? Is League of Legends, DoTA , CS Go, etc "Viral games" too?

Yaa Shiny Single player games that sell pretty much the majority of their sales within the first 6 months are not "Viral"? God of War is not a game that people play for 20 hours, complete and collect dust? that is by FAR a more flakey product.

Phil Spencer was spot on the money. As the internet got better and reached more people, Online gaming has dwarfed SP gaming with very little exceptions.

The numbers for PUBG could be even higher since Tencent now publishes their own version of the game in China already had 10 million users pre-register

Why is it an awful comparison?

10-15 years ago, 5+ million sales was a big deal, on the console scene this was literally the height of popularity.

That has far since changed, it changed on PC 13 years ago with games like World of Warcraft, online shooters and then mobas and now cheaper entry games as a service that have far exploded past these pathetic numbers being posted here as "LOOK SP STILL RELEVANT LOOK".

This thread and subject crops up every few weeks from cows, its the same desperate attempt to win a losing argument on a dying forum because many peopel don't give a damn what the latest 10 hour action game sells... because it just ends up in trade in CEX or Best Buy or whatever.

The only people crying here are the ones taking it so personally that they think we are saying "SP is no longer relevant" which has not been said once, not by us, not by him.

Its obvious you have no clue what you're talking about. How on Earth are Gears 4 or Halo 5 low budget MP games filled with Microtransactions? Ryse, Quantum Break, Recore, Halo Wars 2, FH2 and 3, Rise of the TR are all SP games they invested in. One of them they foot the bill for an entire live action TV show for. Did these games turn out to be GoW caliber? No, but that doesn't mean they ignored SP gaming. You cows just want to write a narrative and the only way you can is to ignore the facts and take things out of context.

I have noticed that fanboys on this website have been doing this a lot lately. It is getting pretty annoying to be honest because it is getting worse. It is like I am a cow so I can make anything I want up and since we are winning the console war anything I say or say about the competition is the truth now. It is getting very strange.

When your console brand is in a complete state of decay (pun intended) you will manufacture any damage control to help yourself sleep better at night. The Xbone is getting completely destroyed by the PS4 both in quality and sales of its games. Lems have run out of damage control points and they are now starting to manufacture damage control points kinda like how MS itself comes up with bullshit metrics like “engagement” to cover up the fact that they are hiding terrible sales numbers. It’s the same kind of bullshit and damage control we are seeing in the White House right now with their “alternative facts” and spin.

They are not as what they were before online MP came to consoles. My point is that MP games are much bigger than SP games. Most of the highest-grossing games last year were F2P MP games, dwarfing SP games in revenue.

But that doesn't mean SP games have declined. SP games are still as popular as ever, but just not as big as MP games. There will always be a market for SP games. So Phil was both right and wrong in a sense.
