@warmblur: Wonder if they've even use that to be honest. They've indicated a couple of times it will be an entry point than something designed for people use to VR (as you probably know, get use to locomotion). Valves be-all-things-to-everyone could potentially hinder aspects of the game, giving Ghost credibility, which would be terrible.

Mhm, I'll be really disappointed if we dont get to run a Strider in Alyx

I mean the fact the thing tilts all over shit would make normies paint their floor floral yellow.

Probably be on-the-rail as well (not the Ghost kind the actual definition) which would arguably be out of place.

Think it's more likely you will shoot them off it or just see them like the trailer as early scripted story-telling.

@uninspiredcup Even if it was just something like using the Strider to bridge a gap between two buildings, it'll still be awesome. Some of my favorite moments in Boneworks are when you're suspended high above ground (like that huge sawblade garbage disposal thing). I don't care if it makes VR newbies sick, I just want to look down at City17 from atop a Strider lol

But just imagine how awesome combat atop a Strider stomping through City17 in VR would be...

the review sites will give it a 9-10 most likely.

It will be scored highly mainly because it will be compared to VR games and not traditional games and we all know the VR landscape is in a serious drought of complete and flushed out AAA games.

For me personally it will be a 6-7,

I just cant see myself liking the changes with the controls and having to use a VR headset to play Half Life.

I love half-life, but this just isn't for me. Im more of a KB/M type of guy when it comes to half life.

You VR boys have fun tho.

Why anyone would want to point a mouse at a flat screen instead of using 6DoF 1:1 motion tracking is beyond me. But then there are console fanboys who think a gamepad is superior to M&K so... who knows

Just not a big fan of VR, honestly don't really like the platform, new half life being built around it.... i just cant see myself liking more than tradition KB/M half life. Maybe I will try it and it will blow me away, but ive got low expectations for this one.

Seriously don't get why its so hard for VR fans to understand... KB/M has always been the way to play PC games since they started...... Majority of games play like this, majority of gamers play like this.

Why would gamers just want to abandon how they have played games their entire life for 6DoF 1:1 motion tracking instead is beyond me.

Because it's superior? Would you play an FPS with a gamepad instead of M&K if you played games all your life with a gamepad? The jump from M&K to VR is twice as big as the jump from gamepad to M&K. Sorry for going in circles but I just don't accept your reasoning.

Better picture quality. Comfort of not wearing a helmet.

Curious... How does the motion in these controllers suck less than the PlayStation Move? I played the Rift only briefly.

Technically not Alyx directly related, but since the games are currently free and since it's an expansion the vast majority of people haven't played, it's interesting curio worth highlighting that may as well be new content for most people.

Half-Life: Alyx -- Pre-Loading And Launch Times Announced

Valve announces when you can start pre-loading the VR game and when you can start playing.

  • Half-Life: Alyx, the first new entry in the series in 13 years, is finally launching on March 23 as a virtual reality-exclusive game. Developer Valve has now announced exactly when the game will launch and when pre-loading will begin.
  • Pre-loading starts on Friday, March 20, Valve confirmed in a tweet. Players can download the entire game at that point, but of course it won't become playable until March 23. The game unlocks at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on March 23, Valve also confirmed.

Yeah sometimes, Halo and Gears especially. I played both games competitively with a controller for years. Still prefer it, Especially with Halo, Halo feels like shit with kb/m imo. Now if we are talking counter strike, unreal tournament, or quake. KB/M is a must.

However BF and COD feel pretty good with either one imo.

I dont find this being a good comparison tho, both gamepads and kb/m function in the same way, basic button inputs, the way the buttons are arranged and the mouse vs thumbstick for aiming is the only major difference.

Id say the jump from KB/M to VR isn't comparable, its changing the entire platform. It relies on movements and not as much on button inputs.

VR is its own platform, completely seperated from both kb/m and gamepads. It is its own platform separated from traditional gaming.

Mobile games are even more close to KB/M than VR is.

I don't think it's superior. It's matter of preference. For example as Valve itself said that they were considering Portal VR game but realized that it'll make people sick while falling through infinite portals, so they went with Half Life VR instead. But then they had to tone down the game speed and may be remove driving sections to make it compatible with VR and easier to digest for wider audiences without making them sick. VR has its limitations.

There are pros and cons of every input device. Mouse Keyboard for example is excellent for fast paced shooters and precise targeting but it's not as good as controllers are when it comes to driving games. So I can see why he prefers Mouse Keyboard over VR space. It's matter of preference. Personally I'm excited for Half Life Alyx but I wouldn't mind traditional Half Life game in the future.

I spoke with a source with direct knowledge of the Oculus SteamVR integration who told me that the integration is solely the work of Valve. They also said that on multiple occasions Valve offered for Oculus to take over the integration but never received a response.

Facebook really are assholes.

Just a heads up, people will make suicide accounts to spoil the ending, if you care about that shit put yourself on forum-isolation.

The first Half-Life: Alyx review has been published in Edge magazine

RESPECTED PUBLICATION ISSUES 9/10 REVIEW SCORE

The first Half-Life: Alyx review has been published in British magazine Edge.

The respected publication’s next issue – which is arriving with subscribers now – awards Valve’s VR shooter a review score of 9/10, VGC understands.

Half-Life: Alyx is available to pre-load via Steam now and will be playable from 10am PT (5pm GMT) on Monday, March 23.

Alyx is the first new release in the series since 2007’s Half Life 2: Episode Two, which was originally planned as the middle part of a trilogy which remains incomplete.

The Edge verdict is part of an extensive cover feature in its new issue, which also includes a lengthy interview with CEO Gabe Newell.

Among other topics, Newell discusses the developing rivalry between Valve’s Steam platform and the Epic Games Store, telling Edge he believes the competition will ultimately be good for everyone.

“Competition in game stores is awesome for everybody. It keeps us honest, it keeps everybody else honest,” he said.

“But it’s ugly in the short term. You’re like, ‘Argh, they’re yelling, they’re making us look bad’ – but in the long term, everybody benefits from the discipline and the thoughtfulness it means you have to have about your business by having people come in and challenge you.”

In a separate interview with IGN this week, the Valve boss said he believes Half-Life: Alyx represents a chance for the company to bounce back after a couple of missteps in recent years.

“We can be right, and we can be wrong, we make mistakes,” he said. “We did Steam Machines, Artifact was a giant disappointment, you know we screw things up.

“And so, for us, this is actually a really powerful moment for us, because this is as good as we get. We want to know, we want to find out, are we on the right track? We want people to come back and say, ‘oh my God, the magic still is there’.”

He added: “I think we’ve nailed it but for us, we’ve gnawed on this thing for a long time, it’s time for it to go out into the real world, it’s like you’re sending your kid off to college, let’s see what happens. That for us is incredibly important and part of our development.”

Three. Hundred. Thousand. Pre-orders.

PRE-ORDERS!

For a platform many would consider "niche".

Does that mean it's not niche?

God, I am so ready. My Index just arrived, I've been stretching and playing lots of Hot dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades to work on my gun skills haha.

Nice man! I remember when I first got my Oculus back in 2016 and tried it for the first time ever my mind was blown. I'll never forget playing Mirror's Edge that night in VR and just staring at the sky and walls every little detail has so much more depth to it in VR. I remember just being blown away by a chair in the game I know it sounds stupid but just seeing everything in VR for the first time in Mirror's Edge was a dream come true.

@warmblur: the thing that has me most excited is VR is still fairly new. Not as a concept, but as far as a regular commodity goes, VR is in its infancy imo. And it is already amazing. Can't wait to see what the future holds.

The Index is amazing. I also started with an Oculus Rift and thought it was amazing, the Index is a large step up. The controllers are great, it's more comfortable, and the screen door effect is almost non-existent (that was the selling point for me, I play a lot DCS so I need to see the letters in the cockpits)

Wish I got an Index mainly because Oculus drivers are shit. The hardware side, ace.

Aside from games use the virtual cinema a lot with Big-Screen VR. After a while of using it don't notice have a headset on. Awesome watching stuff like Deep Space 9 in your own grand theater.

Yeah, I hear ya I hate the screen door effect I haven't used my Oculus in like a year I'm waiting to see what next gen headsets bring to the table it can only get better. But still I had so many amazing memories in VR it's weird but the way my brain remembers my old VR experiences feels more like a dream then what a normal game perceives them as.

Is it possible to play through this without the glory kills? I'm reading about ammo being scarce and that you need to glorykill the demons. I'm not into that. Worst part about the last one.

Is it possible to play through this without the glory kills? I'm reading about ammo being scarce and that you need to glorykill the demons. I'm not into that. Worst part about the last one.

Unfortunately not.

That is really cool it looks like in Alyx you can do really interesting things that you just can't do in other games.

It might be best VR game ever made. but it still suck compare to traditional PC games or even console games.

thats my take on this. VR doesnot have any standard to this game will get 10 and 9. kinda liked golden eye back in 1997.

Even a website that consistently attacks Valve to promote Epic has to (very) begrudgingly admit it's great.

Imagine living in alternate dream world where we got Half life 3. a proper sequel to Half life 2. and include portal elements there too. gordon freeman has portal gun and gravity gun. it would innovate.

but valve decide we cant have nice things.

@ghosts4ever: Imagine being bitter for months about a game because you can't play it due to your system being weak and you can't afford VR.
