Bungie are talented devs: both Halo and Halo 2 got AAA. It's not "silly" to hype the third AAA too. I really doubt Halo Wars will be AAA though.

But I can agree with the topic title. If Halo 3 gets AAA then I would say it's a proven AAA franchise.

Game gets AAA after being hyped AAA, people bask in its glory and we all talk about how great it is and what parts we liked and what not. Game hyped AAA, doesn't get it, doesn't matter really, won't stop enjoyment of the game, just discussion on SW.

TVB makes a very valid point here. Of course you are right when you say there are NO guaruntees, Casey. But in all things there's probability. And a companies track record is a way to gaugue the probable success of a future title. The success of Halo 1 and 2 demonstrates Bungie's talent, so seriously, what are the odds of Halo 3 being AAA vs being AA or less? I could apply the same principle to Bioware who has an impressive repertoire of RPGs, to say Mass Effect is highly likely to be AAA, and Factor 5 having made amazing Rogue Squadron games, so Lair has promise there too.

Look at it this way. You're interviewing several applicants, but in no way can you say any is going to guaruntee the success of the division they'll be overseeing. So are you just going to pick randomly and hope for the best? Of course not. There's a REASON resumes are reviewed, they're a solid indicator of who's most likely to deliver and bring success to your company.

The Halo franchise is 2/2 for AAA games.

That should be a good indication of what to expect from Halo 3.

Nothing could ever guarantee the 'next' game in the series will be as good as past games. You could have 5,6,7 straight AAA gfames and the next could always not live up to them. But as for expectations I think two AAA games point to a third AAA game.

If you compare to movies the third of a Trilogy is always hyped up. Sometimes it lives up to it sometime not, but the expectation should be there.

As Mold pointed out, without an "official" hype thread, the boards would be flooded. And by that earlier poll Casey did, he tried to settle on a set of rules for how all posters now agree it would work. He's trying to contain the madness 8)

2 games is 2 games. If your favourite band has released 2 albums of what you belived to be some of the greatest music ever produced, would you not have high expectations for their 3rd album? Of course you would.

The industry expects Halo3 to be AAA does it not? (which we can safely assume given that if it doesn't reach AAA status the all and sundry will consider it a massive dissapointment). If the industry expects AAA then expect people to hype it - there's no point in being a cynic and bring out the 'what if's...'. The glass is not always half full.

those devs have made way more games and Oni was one of the first Bungie games theres a big differance. So let me get all this straight.

You're saying a franchise isn't a AAA franchise unless every game in it is AAA according to gamespot and there are at least three games in the series?

Seems like a fair comment, except that general gamer opinion and game reviews often don't mesh.  A AAA series would be perhaps a series whose next game is generally expected to be AAA status, and whose past games have a strong tendency to be AAA titles.  The flaw in your statement is that you expect the term AAA series to be based in fact and rigid standards, but it is not.  If the games in the series' past have generally been agreed upon to be great games, and the next game is expected to be more of the same, then many people do feel it is a AAA series.

On a personal note, though, I agree with your comment that two games is not enough to judge the series' next game as an almost guaranteed AAA, though it is an indicator that the next game may be.  And yes, Halo 3 is overhyped; from what I can see from the multiplayer, it looks like a fun game, but without any revolutionary changes.  In my opinion, for a game to receive a AAA score, it has to improve upon its previous iterations and onother games in the genre, and Halo 3 only seems to be doing that graphically.  I guess we'll see when it comes out.

In my opinion, (Coming from a PC gamer) Halo is one of the most piece of junk FPS game ever, the controls are just trash compared to a PC, I used to love playing FPS games on consoles, (Goldeneye for instance on the N64) but when I transfered from consoles to elit....PC, (I'm joking on the elite thing) I just forgot all about the analog stick, and I was amazed by the mouse, very easy to know controls and VERY easy to aim, no more pray and spray and what I like to call over targeting (Example: OH SNAP! I accidently held the analog stick to long and my crosshair went right across the target!) Now for saying that, time to talk bout Halo, compared to the FPS games I play on PC, I think it's trash. The story is trash, it was built on one thing, multiplayer, sure it's a good FPS game for the consoles players, and ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG GRAPHICS GRAPHICS GRAPHICS!! but to me, it's not good, it's just an overhyped game. 

You know after typing that....I'm beginning to think Crysis = the PC's Halo......................nah, it's not LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS ZOMG THAT = GAME PLAY MAN! (hey! that sounds like Gears of Bore!)

So Halo 3 needs a AAA to be a AAA franchise? Okay, I guess that works. But seriously, does anyone want a Halo 4? It's with shooters and some other games that I usually draw the line at the 3rd entry because trilogies are great for any kind of series. After 3, then it starts getting old.

I guess they could continue something with Halo (besides Halo Wars, I'm talking FPS) after Halo 3, but I'm hoping for Bungie to start something new afterwards.
