Have there been any true masterpieces yet this gen

id so not really there has been some great games like mass effect pc, cod4, uncharted, gears and gta4 was a brilliant game but I still dont think there has been a true masterpiece this gen to me anyway that covers all bases from story to graphics/gameplay that just blows you away

I have a feeling mgs4 will be the first true masterpiece this gen, this is just my opinion though some people might think gears was a masterpiece just want to here opinions.

I have yet to play a game like Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, or The Legend of Zelda this generation. I have had fun so far, yes, but nothing yet.

Of course, I haven't played every title I've wanted to play that is out yet either. Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, and Eternal Sonata are on my to-buy/play list after MGS4.

I would say Bioshock !Prid3r

I have yet to beat Bioshock, but I don't think it is all it is cracked up to be especially how amazing my roommate hyped it to be. Its fun and has some neat things, but it just wasn't a game that I would call a masterpiece which is sad cause I like FPS. :(

I think I can see why people would call it one though, and its still a great game.

• STALKER
• Patapon
• Forza 2
• SMG
• The Witcher (when they finally release the EE patch anyway)
• Rockstar: Table Tennis
• Crackdown
• GTA 4
• Halo 3
• Mass Effect

Gears of War was great, had a great cinematic quality to the storytelling, and tried something new as well. Felt polished also!

Crysis has the same poished, action-movie type feel to Gears of War, so that'd be on my list.

Gears, Bioshock, Galaxy, portal and GTA4 are masterpieces imo. (MGS4 and LBP will be to i think)Always-Honest

I honestly beleive that MGS4 will be the first "masterpiece" of this gen.

No. I can't think of a game this gen that made me think "Man, that game is truly amazing." In terms of substance the latest games have been very shallow. The majority of them have been shooting bad guys and blowing stuff up, which is fun n' games but nothing has had a lasting impression so far.

I hope MGS4 will be special.

Company of Heroes and STALKER.

They're not masterpieces as in the context of being all-around "good", but having a few qualities that are so well-done so as to outdo their flaws.

Bioshock, mass effect, STALKER and GTA4 are all masterpeices in my book.

oh and metal gear solid 4 will not be a master peice.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a video game with a good story and very cinematic storytelling.

But, even if it would be classified as an "interactive movie," that "interactive movie" will more than likely be better than many actual video games are out now.

Sigh. Talking about fanboys. Just because you become a very good, an excellent exclusive (nobody denies that MGS 4 will be great) it doesn't mean it will raise standards. I'm pretty sure it won't.

Call of Duty 4 was a masterpiece to me. So was GTA IV, and Uncharted, and Gears of War, lol.

A true masterpiece? Well a lot of people would probably say The Orange box but I don't agree, at least so far. I'm still fairly earl in Half-Life 2 and wouldn't call it the best shooter ever but it's pretty good. People will want to spit on my face for saying GTA IV, but of all the games this gen this one was the most beautifully crafted IMO. But I believe the best game to come out this gen, based on RE4 and what I've seen from RE5, will be RE5. MGS4 then again really looks amazing... who knows. It's subjective anyway.

* Metal Gear Solid 4 (come on there's no way it isn't gonna be)

* Grand Theft Auto 4

* Portal

* Gears of War

* Super Mario Galaxy

Just my two cents. :D

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl immediatly comes to mind, just for the level of detail and atmosphere in that game, but since Clear Sky looks like it will own SoC in just about every way imaginable, I think that'll be a true masterpiece.

On another note, I think Eternal Sonata should get some credit for being an artistic masterpiece.

Oh, and No More Heroes. Having fountains of blood and coins spew out of people as you cut them in half with a beam katana = BEAUTIFUL.

imo they were mediocre with rubbish stories and quite good multiplayers which kinda get boring after a while...

not saying theyre bad tho....

Gears was a Masterpiece, IMHO. Gears multiplayer getting bored? Well say that to the thousand of people who play it every day, even 2 years after its release.

these three games have left me feeling amazed after playing them .. that should be the defining thing regarding a masterpiece

if it feels like there's something missing, like with GTAIV IMO, then it's not quite there

Gears, Oblivion, GTAIV are great games but they lack that masterpiece quality for me
