You ppl do realize that the Blueray allocates data on the PS3 in a very unusual & inefficient manner right? On top of that they probably didnt even bother compressing the game.

Haters gonna hate.Dont people realize that its not the power of the bluray? Its the lack of power behind the PS3.All that space usedis for pre rendered cutscenes and video used. Only about 10 Gb is most likley used for texture and graphics storage.

[QUOTE="Zanoh"]Excellent question. Right. I love killzone 3 but I mean I'm pretty sure even crysis isnt that big. WoW is 25gigs or so...So yeah WHY is a good question.Why...?

I'm pretty sure it's uncompressed audio, repeated data and junk files as others have pointed out. Personally, I think it's extremely clever, it's gonna deter most pirates from downloading the game for sure.Why...?

Can't wait to see the high quality uncompressed textures with my own eyes, hear the crystal clear sound/music with my own ears, taste the delicious gourmet flavor of a brand spankin new Blu-Ray disc PS3 game when I take it out of the case and lick all over it with my tongue... Killzone 3 - It's a 41.5 GB sensory explosion.Messiahbolical-
LOL.
You people really are clueless about technology, aren't you?
Uncompressed textures? Yeah, I'm sure your 256 MB vidoe buffer will LOVE those
And "crystal clear sound"? HA! The human ear has a very hard time detecting the difference between uncompressed audio and compressed audio at higher bit rates. Not only that, but most of you will go ahead and compress it into some lossy dolby standard anyway before pumping it out to your speakers
I guarantee that most of that space is HD video and redundant data.

The sound will likely be in 7.1 surround which takes up a lot of space on the disc or something like that, it's the same with MGS4.Can't wait to see the high quality uncompressed textures with my own eyes, hear the crystal clear sound/music with my own ears, taste the delicious gourmet flavor of a brand spankin new Blu-Ray disc PS3 game when I take it out of the case and lick all over it with my tongue... Good luck with that.

Most audio samples for games are mono, some stereo. The game's audio engine mixes these in order to create a soundscape. It applies effects to the sources and mixes them to create multi-channel sound, then it pumps that out to a dolby encoder which compresses it, then sends it to your speakers.
Stop kidding yourselves. Game textures NEED to be compressed. It's the reason WHY high quality compression of texture assets is supported in DX and openGL in the first place.
A large game footprint, does not mean higher quality assets. You're still stuck with 256 MB video buffer, and a 5 year old GPU. There's only so much you can do with that.
A blu-ray (dual layered) can hold about 50 gigs of data. Apparently the data on disc for this game takes up over 40 gigs.
Some people here are in some sort of self delusion and actually think the size means that they'll get uncompressed textures and photo realistic graphics.
The real world is knocking though as the most likely reason for such a large footprint on disc is data redundancy and possibly HD video (a single high quality 2 hour movie can easily take up as much space) for pre-rendered cuscenes.

I never said anything about textures, I was purely talking about audio, which can take up a lot of space.[QUOTE="Whiteblade999"]There really isn't any need to with 50 GBs of space to work with. except when you take read times into account, do you really want 50gbs on the slowest console driver? it'll be like MGS4 except no movies just load screensCompression is their friend...
FIipMode
There's probably a lot of filler redundant data in there in an attempt from Sony to make piracy less appealing. Unless this game is about 50 hours long with hundreds of different locales, each of which consisting of huge open world areas... but it's not like that. themyth01
And once the pirates get rid of all the junk data, Sony will just have wasted all that time and effort (and possibly money for using dual-layered Blurays).
Oh, and that sensory explosion post with that blown up PS3 picture in one post would be epic.
Well I dont understand it
Uncompressed vs compressed audio/texture/video
Which is better or are they the same
Duplicate data check, Lossless sound that 99% of your consumer base cannot take advantage of check. Will it make it a better game? not likely and it will be proven by the usual no purchase by the majority of is it now 40 million ps3 users?
Likely duplicate data, I don't know why one should be impressed.
no purchase by the majority of is it now 40 million ps3 users?Like nearly every other game on every other platform.WilliamRLBaker
And with no real sources to back anything you say up as usual.
It would take one disk, just compress the audio and some other stuff.Port it to the 360....
It would take around 5 or 6 discs....
DroidPhysX
Probably a bunch of redundant data, uncompressed sound and videos.
41.5 GB of data and only 8 mp maps.:P
I doubt I'll be able to tell the difference between compressed and uncompressed audio, but as long as the audio is as good or better than it was in KZ 2 (one of my favorite shooters to listen to in surround sound just behind BC 2), I'm fine.
Lossless sound is great. More games with uncompressed sound - the better. Just because not everyone can afford something doesn't mean that they shouldn't include the option for it. Not everyone has the PS Move or 3D TVs, but the game supports PS Move and 3D as well. This game seems to have everything, so I'm getting it day 1.Lossless sound that 99% of your consumer base cannot take advantage of check.

This will be hilarious if the campaign is like 5 hours.cainetao11Then it will be exactly like all the COD games. :P
Is there any reason to have it at 41.5, mostlikely not, sony probley told them make the game with some crazy number, so we can have something to brag about.
