Um this is a pointless thread. Considering it is only speculatory and does not include digital download sales which on PC is the bulk of the industry now. Sigh. This is almost as bad as people who saw npd pc sales figures and concluded "PC gaming is dead" because they only looked at the header and not the article itself. :(

I know, man...sometimes I feel utterly insulted everytime I buy a PC game...those damn DRMs are just like walking into a record store, and the clerk demands you leave your bag at the counter, then follows you around the whole store with his eyes glued on you . I mean, I know...there are thieves in this world...but it's not a good business practice to treat every customer like they're going to steal your merchandise!

I would actually be glad if there was a miracle cure to prevent piracy. It would ensure better sales and that would ensure that PC receives more and better attention when it comes to games. I'm just opposed to hurting the legit consumer. That's like soldiers shooting into a crowd mixed with friendlies and hostiles.

Mystic-G
Its a bit worst than that. Its more of a "I can't hit the bad guys but lets bombard his closest next-of-kin place of residence!". I remember reading some comments when the UBI AC2 DRM measures were first made public. One unabashed pirate quite much summed up the whole situation : "Why should I care? It only affect legit gamers". Something along the lines. I"m all for devs to receive profit for their work but right now, really, they are shooting at friendlies.

People complain about DRM, this is why it exist.

Instashot
I don't pirate games but I wish companies would realize that DRM does NOTHING to the pirate. I'm an honest consumer and actually buy the game and the DRM screws ME over., NOT the pirates.

Good riddance. As far as I am concerned a Iwards shoving of PC Gamers with MW2 deserves no sympathy, as does Ubisoft's DRM.

This actually makes me want to see games come out for consoles only. A game being pirated 4 million times is just ludicrous.

The day that happens is the day I quit gaming (or at least become extremely disinterested towards it).

Exactly, because they can and it's free and they don't want the bs. A friend bought it and said it was alright but the way Craptivision responded stirred up a **** and made millions hate.

That's 290 000 sold copies too many. If Activision is audacious enough to demand that the PC market accept their ridiculous choices then they'll be told in no subtle terms that their sorry excuse for a game isn't worth paying for.

No wonder Capcom didn't want to release Super Street Fighter 4 on the PC.

Get ready to see a lot more DRM and anti-piracy efforts in the next generation of console and PC games.

Software developers aren't going to continue to take it up the arse forever.

Notice PC retail sales i.e. where's Valve's Steam or Impulse DD sales?

Of-course you can' t. USA retail is probably less than ten percent of the PC market. It might have been pirated four million times, but it sold at least two million. Activision were very happy with the PC performance. And it was priced 60$ / 60Euro. One steam sale with that kind of price probably brought them way more money than one console sale.

I didnt conveniently ignore anything, I didnt even notice, that dosent mean he dosent have a gaming pc, why do all pc gamers take these arguments personally? To you pirate games? If not this is not about you get over it. Why would you go out of your way to argue about something you dont do?

rollermint

Your whole reason being on this thread is attacking PC gamers who in your opinion either pirates or support piracy. Even using the words of one who obviously has both a gaming PC and a PS3.

PC gamers do get very defensive regarding these kinda threads due to the negative but flawed stereotypical view that all and only PC gamers pirate. I think a lot of PC gamers have a right to be on this thread to air our views.

But it seems that anything we say will be immediately construed as supporting piracy.

I am not attacking pc gamers just to attack them, if you dont like the stereotype, stop defending the pirates, as for my thread in the pc forums that I made, it was actually about this same kind of issue. Just because I post my opinions and conserns of pc gaming, dosent mean that am am out just to hate. I can have a gaming pc and not support piracy and not defend it, stop acting like I am only posting because I hate the pc, when in fact is not the platform but the community that attacks me everytime I dont go along with the normal pc gamer mentality. I always get flamed for stating the current facts about what is happing to pc gamres. Sorry I dont blindly defend things, I dont blindly defend anything.

well it will probably sell 12+ million eventually so i guess people did deem it worth buying. there is no way to stop pirates though, and trying to blame sales on them is pretty pointless, because they exist and regardless of whether you want your game pirated or not it will be.

it's a what if? scenario that just doesn't translate to real life, you can't blame your customers for something that pirates do. what they need to do is try to get even more customers on board, not convert the pirates. i don't think removing features and sticking drm all over your work is going to help anyone.

erm I'm not sure when I defended piracy.

Some of us did state the reasons the piracy problem are getting out of hand, one amongst which, strict DRM methods that punishes legit buyers instead of the pirates themselves.

How could that ever be mistaken for supporting piracy?

well another angle to look at it from its like what happened to crysis... many ppl wanted to know if their rig could run it... since ppl said the retail game ran better than the demo..ppl pirated the game as a demo.. im pretty sure some ppl did the same for MW2..especially considering how they upped the price for no reason and removed many features from the pc version..oo and no demo either...

PS3 DRM still hasn't been cracked.dc337

That method isn't DRM, it is making piracy more expensive than buying the game. Obviously, that only proves that if fence-sitting pirates will go with the more affordable option when they really want to play the game. There are just some pirates that won't ever pay, and they are the ones who cracked the PS3 a month after it was released... the revel in breaking the rules, and don't even care that it costs more money than the games, they do it for the entertainment.

Not that I like Activision, but why? Just because PC gamers feel entitled? So because Activision charged $60 instead of $50, and didn't have dedicated servers, that gives 4 million people the right to steal their property? Two wrongs dont make a right, and this just perpetuates PC gaming's problems.

I agree, no matter what Activision or any gaming company does, they do not deserve to have this happened to them.

You guys are actually getting upset about activsion's craptacular milkage game getting pirated? They dissed the pc gamers for a console focused game. What do you expect. Charging $60 , no dedicated servers, crappy map, milkage sequel. PC gamers don't put up with the crap console gamers do.. because they don't have to. Midnightshade29
What are you suggesting here? That if they left dedicated servers and charged $50 then it wouldn't have been pirated so badly?

Why was COD4 so heavily pirated then?
http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/156948/pc-piracy-levels-are-astounding-says-cod4-dev/

PC games get pirated no matter what the company does.

We already saw this with World of Goo that was pirated at 90% even though it was $20 and DRM free. Enough excuses already.

Because with a multiplat there's the question of why bother supporting the pc when less than 10% of the people playing are legit customers. They would only need to convert 10% of those pirates to make up for the loss of pc sales. A lot of the legit pc gamers would also buy the console version if they had no choice.

As for Blizzard they use an entirely different business model. They aren't trying to sell games on both consoles and MMOs are naturally protected against piracy. Yes there are private servers but most people want to play in a heavily populated world where their friends are.

Ahh, beat me to it. I was going to state that if the game isn't worth buying yet it is worth stealing then ofcourse the game has tremendous value when considering over 4 million decided to pirate it, Even if one were to downplay the amount pirated to a fraction, it is still a lot of potential profit lose.

When looking at statistics like these, how can you defend pirates and attack DRM? Companies are simply losing money on games. Sure, I'd imagine many piraters wouldn't have bought the game anyway, so they didn't lose sales to those people. But out of 4 million, I'd say somewhere near half must have otherwise bought the game. at least a 3rd. And so if there was no piracy the game would have sold SIGNIFIGANTLY more. I'm sorry... but DRM IS the future of PC gaming... and you really only have pirates the game, and the fact that companies have tp make a profit.

the problem with DRM is that its a terrible 'solution' for piracy

its a quite hassle for legit buyers.... so much so that PC Gamer does not recommend any games that have Ubisofts DRM

You can't tell how many people who pirated the game did not buy it or wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

DRM has angered many people especially Ubisoft's constant internet connection one.

People might buy the game and hate the DRM so they pirate it to bypass that.

I don't even understand why they use DRM when it is cracked in less than a week or even before the game is released.

It doesn't stop the pirates and it just angers the real customers.

Who here is defending pirates? And also, why not attack DRM? It makes legitimate owners lives harder and pirates have it cracked within days of release... or in some cases, before the game is released.

Lol. I love how you say "factually" when in fact, the PC is the largest and fastest growing gaming market in the world. There are over 250 million online PC gamers and it takes up a sizeable chunk of the entire industry (something around 25%). PC is alive and well... it has been "dying" since 1985, but without it, gaming would die.

As much as I dislike Activision, seeing these kinds of piracy numbers is not a good thing.

I dont know how the pirates can justify themselves. If you dont think said game is worth your money, wait for it to go down in price then. Or if you dont like a publisher, dont buy their products. Simple as that. Stealing a game out of spite-no, period-is wrong, and it has led to developers and publishers to resort to DRM. It is because of all this DRM, some of it draconian (Spore *cough*), that i refuse to buy PC games outside an MMO here and there, required connection is good enough. And we are at the point that there is negligable difference between a game's console and PC versions outside of graphics.

It's sad things have come to this: with these attempts to try to stop pirates, the legitimate consumers are oftentimes the ones that are 'punished' because of the DRM's methods.

If anything is slowly killing gaming, it's the piracy. I hope the companies are able to come up with a good solution in the future to stop this big problem.

this is why pc gaming is on life support what a shame

Golden_Boy187

In what way is it on life support? Please explain.

It's seen as the largest games market in the world, according to a JPR study. Link.

It's also expected to grow to a $34 billion section of the market by 2012. Just less than doubling in 2 years.

Some interesting facts from the article:

  1. Since 2005, JPR says more gaming PCs have been shipped than the combined total unit sales of the 360, PS3, and Wii combined. How many total? About 196 million worldwide, compared to 74.7 million 360s, PS3s, and Wiis.
  2. The average PC gamer has a 17-inch screen running at 1280 x 1024, serious gamers have 21-inch screens running at 1680 x 1050, and extreme players have 30-inch screens running at 2560 x 1600.

Also, a quote from the JPR blog shown in the article:

"Fact is the PC Gaming Market is bigger, worth more money, growing faster, and has better technology than the console market. How come no one but us seems to know that?".

Denoting any change in the market using solely one aspect of the world is a bad idea, considering the fact that the majority of PC gamers come from the European and Asian regions.

So many ignorant comments in this thread.

I wish people could use their brain and read my posts or similar ones.

PC gaming never has and never will die.

You kids are stuck with a viewpoint of a couple of years when we older gamers have seen computers playing games for more than two decades and it is still going strong.

So stop listening to faulty data and actually do some research of your own.

Pirates deserve nothing. Legitimate PC gamers deserve good games.

Look at the Humble Indie bundle downloads. Even though 25% were pirated, it made over $1 million in a week, and as such was extended for another 3 days. On top of that, the average donation was around $8 I believe. This shows there are a lot of legitimate consumers out there. Even if there are pirates in the midst of it.

MellowMighty
DRM does not stop piracy DRM does not affect piracy rates DRM does not affect profit margins Each digital sale is 100% net revenue You can not show me that a single one of those pirated copies was a lost sale Even if they had the most draconian DRM in the world, a la Ubisoft, it would still be cracked and it would still be pirated.

God, another one of these. No Ded Servers = People pirated for spite. No digital distribution sales numbers = we got no idea how much it acctually sold. Most PC gamers these days go for DD instead of retail copies.

The best thing those of you with a touch if ignorance can do is go and read about Sins of a Solar Empire and what they did. True pc gamers will buy games and support good products. Pirates can go die.

I dont know why console owners are so bent on hating PC gamers.

[QUOTE="beekayjay"]So who here is left that's saying PC gaming is alive and well? It factually is not well. And piracy is a large reason why. Just die already, PC gaming.foxhound_fox

It's ironic how you laugh at someone for producing false facts and then you do the very same thing.

No, I absolutely agree with you! My first comment was of course a hopeful punishment to the pirates, which is flawed and will never happen. Legitimate gamers shouldn't have to suffer the same.

Actually, much of what he said is correct.

Look to my link above, denoting JPR stating PC gaming is the largest market in the world currently.

Next, this link has a quote from Valve stating:

"And North America retail reports don't have Europe in them, and they don't have online PCs on them, they don't have micro-transactions PCs in it. Steam has 20 million users right now and you've got figures like the Cartner Group tells us there's 260 million online PC gamers in the world – and there's 250 million PCs shipped in 2007; that's a huge installment,"

You'll notice that he quotes the Cartner Group stating there are over 260 million online PC gamers.

This is from Valve's business manager, Jason Holtman.

Like the article says, I think this is mainly a regional thing. It sure as hell seems PC gaming is dying a bit in the U.S., while it may be booming in other parts of the world. Its all relative I suppose. Even still, it seems like the PC seems to get the short end of the stick for alot of new and big releases. You've got to wonder why this is when the PC gaming userbase is supposedly much larger than consoles. Just food for thought I guess. Is it because of piracy? I honestly dont know.
