The N64 rare games were amazing and they're the number one reason for buying the system.

Wrong, Rare wasn't the reason people were buying Nintendo 64. It was the fact that Nintendo promised 64 bit games and they maintained that better than Atari did with the Jaguar. That's like saying PS One was sold better because Square Enix was developing for it.
I don't really believe you. Rare games were well known, well advertised, and talked about often. They were very important games in the 5th generation and they were certainly reasons to buy an N64, because many were taking about them.
And yes, the PS1 did sell better because Squaresoft developed for the system (as well as benefitting greatly from what was Squaresoft's golden age). You don't think Final Fantasy VII helped boost PS1 sales?
Rare's games were well known, yes, but you stated it as if it was them alone that the N64 sold. It wasn't. Including Rare's games, here were some examples of games that sold the N64:Goldeneye 007- James Bond fans bought it, James Bond haters bought it, even gamers in general bought that. It is still known as one of the best shooters of all time, it even revolutionized the FPSgenre.
Perfect Dark- Yes it was from the same team behind Goldeneye, but like it's shooter predecessor, it was just as great (maybe even better). Super Mario 64- A proper 3D platformer and it was a launch title.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time- One of the greatest adventure games of all time. Actually, one of the most top rated games of all time (like Goldeneye).
Even more games helped the N64 stay in the game, the main reason it didn't sell as good is because most of the N64 games at the time were $60-$80. More than what PS One games costed. So it's not a Square vs Rare thing.
