Im gonna say N64 simply because of mario/zelda nostalga but I'm gonna be honest and say the PS1 was a better console!
It just had faaaaar better 3rd party support as a result of being disc based (metal gear, final fantasy, resident evil, silent hill, ect, ect)!
Making the N64 cartridge based is the worst decision Ninty ever made imo!
I had both...rockguy92Same here but I played the N64 more since that is the console all my friends had so I would go to their house and play N64 I also borrowed games off of them.
N64....for the original and the best Perfect Dark game. Not to mention 007.
Those two games alone....and maybe with Super Smash Bros.
Between my brother and I, we had Saturn, PSX, and N64. My personal favorite was Saturn. Those arcade ports were fantastic and I still play them today. I hooked my Saturn up in 1995 and its still hooked up today. I might be the greatest VF2 player on the planet-I've been playing with Akira since 97.
N64 for me. I still have it hooked up and still play it to this day. Only PS1 game I still play is FFVII when I decide to break it out again. But since I packed away my PS2 5 years ago...
N64 was an incredible system it had Killer Instinct Goldalso same with Mario Kart and WCW VS NWO especially when ur friends came over damn we had to much fun!! N64 ruled!! :)
[QUOTE="The_Game21x"][QUOTE="Xalaten"]It's weird that a console that only sold 33 million is winning in a poll against a console that sold over 100 million. My theory? Lots of new 360 fans who weren't around for the original Playstation are voting against it because they are lemmings. Just a thought. XalatenAnd we all know sales are the primary method of determining a console's quality... You missed the point. If 100 million people have a PS and 33 million have an N64, the percentage of people who would ONLY own a PS and NOT own an N64 is VERY high. If you move that percentage onto the forums and assume, as most researchers do, that the percentages are fairly equal (given this is not a microsoft only site, or a Sony only site) then the numbers simply do not make sense. Face facts, more gamers had a Playstation than an N64. I know I didn't have an N64. I didn't know anyone who did either. I knew a ton of people with Playstations though. It's just sheer numbers. So as I said, if you assume the numbers are fairly close to that on here, where are all the massive numbers for the N64 coming from? I told you where I think they are coming from, which is why I believe all polls on this forum are flawed. ALL polls. You and I both know the game. Lemmings will always vote for Microsoft stuff, sheep will always vote for Nintendo and cows will always vote Sony.
Why does it matter?
For all you know, a higher percentage of people who either owned both systems and preferred the N64 or owned only the N64 could comprise this forum's userbase.
If your favorite game was on the N64, and you spend hundreds of hours playing it with your friends, you would likely say that was your favorite console, regardless if the other had dozens more games that were highly rated or not.I can't believe people that can say that the N64 was the better console, when they can only list like 10 games at max. Ps1 was better by sheer quality, and quantity.

As a kid in 90's, N64 was amazing. OOT, Major's Mask, Mario Kart, Banjo Kazooie, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong, Super Smash Brothers, Super Mario Party, Pokemon Snap, Super Mario 64, and a ton others. I loved the N64 to death. CleanPlayerThis. Owned both however.

I'm sorry, but list wars isn't a game the N64 wants to play. The n64s top 5 games beat the ps1s top five games. IMO. And you left out the Spyro series ;) Still, Ps1 had some GREAT games, I was just more into the action platformer genre in those days.
I owned (and still do) both and I like the PS1 better. I just found that system had better single player experiences. I like multiplayer and when it came to that the 64 was the way to go for sure. I think the 5th gen was the best for gaming and I'm glad I had both of those systems along with PC.

How many games does PS One have that revolutionized certain genres? All I can think of is Bushido Blade for Fighting games and FFVII for Turned Based RPG's. N64 had Goldeneye for FPS's, Mario 64 for Platformers, and Ocarina of Time for adventures.[QUOTE="jonnyt61"]How many games does PS One have that revolutionized certain genres? I don't think the N64 didn't have amazing games, in fact, I wholeheartedly agree it had some of the best games around at the time. However, simply put, the PS1 had a better library, critically speaking.
Which console a particular person prefers is subjective, however, the quality and quantity of a library, while based in subjective opinions, ultimately becomes the objective reasoning for it being superior.

PS1 had a lot of games with innovative gameplay, although it's difficult to say how much of an influence these games had on their respective genres. Gameplay on the PS1 was very diverse, but games really didn't play follow the leader all too much, except with Resident Evil - and the extent at which games copied the series is exaggerated (even the vaguest horror titles like Parasite Eve are reported as _'s answer to Resident Evil).
What the PS1 did have was a disc based format combined with good 3D capabilities. Because of this, the system fostered improvements in storytelling the N64 didn't have the cartridge space to hold and the Saturn was too difficult to program for.
And as for FFVII, I don't thinkt he game is truly responsible for defining a new chapter int he gerne, as FMV and prerendered backgrounds were already making their way into the gaming industry in not only the JRPG genre, but others as well. It did manage to put JRPGs on the map when it came to the US, though.
