Official July 2007 NPD Sales

Is this directed at me? If so you fail to see my point, Sony targeted for the PS3 sales to double in July NPD, and that they did. 360 outselling ps3 by 11k doesn't "hurt", sure you can claim ownage on this insignifigant number but you are missing the point which is that PS3 sales doubled. 11k is equivalent to 1.75 days of sales for ps3(in US)...

As for the next few months, 360 will dominate(in America at least) thanks to Halo 3. Once the new year sets in though and MGS4, KZ2(granted, if it's good), GTAIV and GT5(set for July release according to famistu interview with developer/best selling franchise last gen after GTA) then PS3 will most likely pull ahead of 360 for awhile. Meanwhile, ps3 will continue to outsell 360 in Japan and the rest of the world.

Ok a couple logic issues here:

The overall increase is 62%, that is a 2/3's increase, not double. This is a MISS and if this was a quarterly results for Sony as a whole missing by 30%, they would have a serious shareholder abandonment rush.

GTA IV is most likely going to be better on the 360 with the extra content MS bribed err paid for. Also they get a short timed exclusive I believe. That will kill any GTA IV system sales for the PS3 unless the price drops WAY WAY down (as in under a 360).

KZ2 looks great but has skepticism from a lot of folks who got burned before on KZ. You admit to that though, good job.

GT5 looks awesome but I don't think it is a system seller as it isn't unique enough. There is enough competition in that genre to make it a hit, but not a system seller.

MGS4 is about the only ammo Sony really has, but if these sale numbers continue to disappoint, well, that rumor of a 360 port may become closer to reality every month. Remember, it isn't first party but GRANTED it will be on the PS3 first by a good amount, so you do have a chance for system sells, if the price is right or only the hardcore fans will get a PS3.

I like how you refute my point of view :|. Probably cause deep down you know that 11k units is nothing. Yeah 360 outsold ps3 by a little, but so what? It's better that the ps3 battles against 360 sales instead of GBA sales. And stop calling me a cow. I am just saying the truth, and I do not care about any insignifigant ownage claiming. If the price drop had no real effect on sales, then there would be some real ownage to be had, but alas that is not the case. If you want to claim this massive ownage over more 11k units sold a month in the US, then cows should make multiple threads every week how the ps3 is selling 15k more than 360 EVERY WEEK in Japan.

The problem is that the doubling of units doesn't seem to have slowed down the competition....at all. Everyone expected the PS3 to come out above X360 in July because of the RROD bad news and the PS3 price cut. Yes, PS3 improved....but Sony's own numbersclaimed a 170% improvement e.g. 270% of previous sales, in the first two weeks of the price cut. And they still didn't slow Wii at all and had no impact on X360. The upshot being that a relatively few more people acted on a discount sale but it looks bad for sustaining that. In any case, they need to do a heck of a lot more than reach sales run rate parity. They need to claim 1st spot quickly....and they are nowhere near that. Equals horrible loss of market share for Sony.

All computers have onboard graphics if they don't have a dedicated card. However dedicated cards are always superior to onboard but add some cost. Satisfactory cards can be purchased for less then $200 though to add enough umph to any PC built this year to play any game at "acceptable" thresholds.

Few points of clarification.

Most of those units are either low to low/medium end GPU's or integrated GPU's which would struggle running most modern games. This is highlighted most by Intels 38% market share, which it primarily has acquired through its integrated GPU solutions as a cheap alternative to add in boards by third parties.

These sales also include mass sales to PC manufacturers who will put them into their systems as video display adapters and not much else, being sold to schools, businesses etc. Many of the PC's with those GPU's will never be used as gaming machines and were never intended to be used as gaming machines.

I'm also pretty sure they include the GPU's made and sold to third parties, i.e. ATi GPU's sold to MS for its Xbox 360.

The top end hardcore gamer makes up a small fraction of the total sales as indicated by the enthusiast unit share of only 2%.

Wii not doing too bad in units sold, but their software sales still need to improve. They only sold 57,000 Madden 08 in one week, while the 360 sold 880,000+. Marios Striker sells 100K in only 5 days and Halo 3 will sell 1 millionon Day 1.Most of Wii 3rd party titles haven't sold that great. That needs to change for them to stay firmly in the lead. Stop release weak games like Boogie. :?

Of course it includes integrated solutions. That is the bedrock of the GPU industry. Integrated solutions are what most business and professional computers come equipped with, even most home solutions come with base integrated GPU to keep prices down.

This is highlighted by Intels 38% market share, it makes almost solely integrated GPU's so it doesn't have to pay ATi/NVidia any money.

True, most of the Wii games have only been average. Games like Excite Truck, Boogie, Mario Strikers Charged, SSX Blur, Elebits, Super Swing Golf, etc.. all were average or worse. The only Wii hit titles are Zelda, RE4 (old game), Super Paper Mario, Mercury Meltdown& WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Most of their scores are in the 70's or less. Not good. When a huge game like Madden 08 only sells 57,000 copies on your system (just a few thousand more then the original XBox), I'dbe a little concerned if I was a 3rd party developer.

It doubled in July because of the price drop. Same thing will probably happen for the XBox 360 as well. If you look at the last 2 weeks, sales of the 360 is increasing again. It will easily break 200,000 for the month of Aug. What will the PS3 look like? I'm still a little shocked that the PS3 didn't outsell the XBox 360 in U.S. sales. With the price drop bundle, I thought it would do better.

The June NPD reporting period was 5 weeks. July was 4 weeks. Taking this into account, the rate of sales doubled. 98k/5= 20k. 159k/4= 40k.

The average consumer will not even be aware of this extra downloadable content, especially since it is not coming out at the same time of the games launch. MS has no timed exclusive deal for GTAIV.

Gran Turismo is a bigger system seller than Halo and MGS4. It was the second best selling franchise last gen(second only to GTA). I can guarantee you there will be a Gran Turismo 5 bundle, like there was a PS2 GT3 bundle.

If there is going to be a 360 version, Konami wouldn't be dumb enough to announce it until at least 3 months after the PS3 version releases, once the sales of it simmer down. Sega made the mistake of announcing VF5 360 before the PS3 version was even released. This killed the PS3 version's sales.

MGS is not even that great of a system seller

its not like a halo, GTA,or super smash bros franchise.....where a very large portion of the system's user base owns it

i believe that less than 6% of ps2 owners own MGS2

so i don't think MGS4 will make a difference in the end

i believe that GTA was sony's BIG GUN last gen, and MS took that advantage away from them......so i don't see there being a game in the ps3's future that can suddenly propel it out of 3rd place

Just for clarification...ah...no. The chart is in 1,000s of units...in other words it is 78.8 MILLION units

It would need to sell nearly 2 million units a month worldwide to hit that number. While 1.1 million is awesome, that means the already awesome Wii would have to increase sales by nearly 100%. I don't see that happeneing. I better guess is it reaching 20 million before spring of 08, and probably 25-28 million by end of 08.

I think the 360 wont be far behind the Wii this christmas. It ahs a genuine Killer App in the form of halo and the new models + new prices + the lesser known quality titles will be hard to resist. The Wii has more system sellers in the form of SSBB and SMG though.

At the moment the Wii is selling 1.16 million every 4 weeks and it hasnt had ANY major software releases for a while. when it does the console wars as we know them will change

For sure, cows and Sony execs are in denial. This is not a marathon in the typical sprint vs marathon comparison. 2008 is too late for Sony. If Wii hits 20+ million this year and X360 hits 16-18M it will be too little too late for Sony unless they have a MONSTER Christmas, which seems highly unlikely.

Dragon Quest Swords/Resident Evil 4 *reported to be 420,000 earlier in this thread* = More or Less Half a million

Sonic and the Secret Rings/Call of Duty 3/ Tiger Woods PGA Tour= A third of a million and over

With an exception of Red Steel all those games got at the least average reviews.

As for your Madden comment, well the Wii version of Call of Duty 3 outsold the PS3 version. So should I use that as "ownage"?

Link for the 170% improvement? Price drops don't generally have an impact on the sales of rival consoles. People who were waiting for the console to get a $100 price drop bought it.

Ok, you need to read the 2006 chart. Look how many performance cards and enthusiast cards were sold in 3 months. Those are mainly PC GAMING cards and arenot reallypurchased foranything else! 14 million in three months is pretty impressive, no matter how you cut it or look at it.

I'm comparing newly released titles.If you check the numbers formultiplatform 3rd party games on the 360, PS3 & Wii, you'll seethe Wii is far behind in sales. If 3rd party developers want to continue making more games for the Wii, these number have to increase by a lot. Mario Strikers to Halo 3 was a bad comparison. lol!! Still, Nintendo exclusive titles should be selling well over 200K for it's first week. Mario Galaxy, SSBB and Metroid 3 should do it with no problems.

And yes, I agree and stated as much that it was people waiting for a price drop. But the problem with that is two fold. Is it sustainable. And if you aren't slowing down the competition then you aren't ever going to catch them. The current doubled sales rate guarantees them a huge loss of market share and a distant 2nd/3rd to the Wii.

When a huge game like Madden 08 only sells 57,000 copies on your system (just a few thousand more then the original XBox), I'd be a little concerned if I was a 3rd party developer.

Dragon Quest Swords/Resident Evil 4 *reported to be 420,000 earlier in this thread* = More or Less Half a million

Sonic and the Secret Rings/Call of Duty 3/ Tiger Woods PGA Tour= A third of a million and over

With an exception of Red Steel all those games got at the least average reviews.

As for your Madden comment, well the Wii version of Call of Duty 3 outsold the PS3 version. So should I use that as "ownage"?

I was talking about U.S. sales when I mentioned those games, not worldwide.

The PS3 version of Madden 08 outsold the Wii. Sheesh, the original XBox version almost outsold the Wii. In anycase Wii 3rd party software sales will still need to improve in the near future. It's not about ownage, it's about getting more quality 3rd titles onto the system. I own a Wii and I'd love to see some exclusive 3rd party titles. Can't wait for some SquareEnix RPG's on the Wii.
