Yes but he still gets to game on PC.

Better a PC with a 1070 than a console of any kind 🤣😋

Literally unplayable without the Pro patch.

What would be the final price in US? After taxes, because they say only the Japanese price included was with taxes.

Also, $700 is for the console and one controller.

Throw in all the other stuff--a second controller, a vertical stand, a year subscription, maybe a couple other "essential" things or QoL improvements--you're probably going to be closer to $900 after taxes.

*oh ya, and don't forget about scalpers. That's assuming you can actually find one in a store. Remember when PS5 first came out? Because I do.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but, it's a 2TB console; the 2TB Series X is $599 while the PS5 Pro is $699.

https://blog.playstation.com/2024/09/10/welcome-playstation-5-pro-the-most-visually-impressive-way-to-play-games-on-playstation/

List of upgraded games:

Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more

Seems worth it to more than double the storage plus the added performance enhancements. The disc drive being excluded is what's hurting it imo.

It's a ~$200 upgrade if you sell your PS5; that's really not bad tbh.

That being said, we need more details around the upgrades; many of the games that are listed already run and look pretty darn good.

That's a PC.

But boy have costs gone up tremendously:

What happened to a 300 euro console with a pack in game?

What happened to a 400 euro mid range graphics card?

What happened to a 100 dollar phone? lmao

Can we really blame covid/inflation/war in europe for all of this?

From CNET

-PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution will work on PSVR2 games in the future

-Planned 40-50 games with PS5 Pro upgrades at launch, focusing on 4K/60FPS upgrades along with graphic boosts

-PS5 Pro could spark a range of extra gaming modes (Cerny has seen games with 3 different PS5 Pro modes)

-over 25% of PS5 owners own 120-FPS capable TVs / around 1 in 10 players have variable refresh rate TVs

-"Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in particular popped compared to the fuzzier graphics on the existing PS5 version. Everything was sharper, and still 60fps smooth. It felt like putting new glasses on."

Oh, and it’s bigger again…

Nobody. I got my math wrong lmao!!! It would be a $300 upgrade.

That's a bit steep for some but, again, it's only $100 more than the 2TB Series X.

Series X has a disc drive, Ps5 Pro doesn't. You have to add 80$ for an external disc drive. Sorry but this is bad no matter how you spin it!!

And no disk drive? My lord 😂

They could've at least showed GTA6 running on the console or something to get people excited for the damn thing. Instead they show a bunch of old games 😂

Hey, you can lie to me, you shouldn't lie to yourself though.

"Nothing" relatively speaking. Like, here on PC, I'm basically drowning in games. I don't think Sony fans can say the same. I mean, yes, you do have games to play, but not exactly drowning in them. In fact, Sony is literally taking games away. IIRC Concord isn't the only game they took off the market recently, I think they took some other game off because the music license ran out or something didn't they?

No need to sell my PS5. I'll be handing it down to the kids or putting it in my room. I'm hoping that ray traced reflections on track for GT7 aren't the only improvement and they improve the VR IQ as well.

What games am I missing out on?

Just like spending 800 euro on a 40% upgrade clealry isnt worth it for a lot of people. Me spending 1000 euro on better graphics just isn't worth it either. My current setup allows me to play pretty much any game.

The nice thing about PC is just how flexible it is. The PS5 Pro will likely be unable to play the latest games in 4ish years.

The Pro would be $799 if it included the disc drive and stand, which the Series X includes both. That is $200 difference.

800 hundred euros....for that. 800 HUNDRED EUROS!!! Are they high? Have they actually lost the plot? It a a smaller upgrade than the PS4 Pro compared to the base PS4, relatively speaking, and they are charging 800 euros for it. Want a disc drive (I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that the disc drive accessory is compatible)....another hundred bucks.

800 Hundred euros for a 5 year old slow clocked processor and an extra 45% rendering chops. What in the actual ever living crap? It makes the PS3 look reasonable at launch...nearly.

I was expecting to say "If you have a PS5 then hold onto it. If not pay a bit extra for the pro"......but at 800 eurobucks you would have to be stark raving mad. Just get the base model.

I'm all for console manufacturers dipping their toe into a more expensive console...but the cost has to be justified. The pro is actually embarrassing at that price. It's laughable. Shocking. They really shouldn't have bothered.

I’ll never understand the console gamer expectations/price point expectations. Look at PC components prices. The Steam Deck and the other handhelds specs and prices. Any meaningful upgrade over the PS5 was going to cost $700+. And I don’t think PlayStation went big enough here. Cerny was basically hyping the consoles ability to run PS5s fidelity mode setting but at 60fps. Folks are better off spending a couple hundred extra on a PC for free online and Game Pass.

I’ll wait for a more detailed spec breakdown. But the details Cerny covered left me unimpressed.

Steam Deck cost me around €400 and can play my ENTIRE steam library.

This would cost me over twice that much, and from this list there's maybe two games I would play:

Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more

Yes, but compare the specs. You’re getting far more than double the hardware for less than double the price. I agree with your games library comment. I’m a Steam Deck owner myself.

At some point console gamers are either going to have to become accustomed to paying more for the performance they expect. Or they’re going to have to lower their expectations. The console gamer crowd expecting native 4K/60 created this hell we’re currently in. Where PC gamers with $2,000 rig are playing at a native 1080p (and maybe up scaling from there) at 360fps.

Digital Foundry ruined console gamers.

I guess I just don't care about graphical performance enough to upgrade. I don't upgrade my PC until I absolutely need to and only with maybe a year old GPU if that. My PS5 works just fine, all the games look great and I have a disc drive, the pro seems pretty pointless especially at that price point.

$700 with no disc drive firmly places this out of range for most casuals but it'll appeal to the hardcore PS fans..

in terms of casuals, the PS5 is already dominating in console sales so there's no worry about that.. this will just be positive PR for Digital Foundry comparisons which is good timing since GTA6 is around the corner and there's no PC release yet..

Sony is good at playing to the console war twitter crowd and once the dust settles on the price, people will be more concerned with touting any perceived power differences..

bottlomline: options are good.. 👍 if it's too pricey, just stick to the base PS5..

Is PlayStation starting to fall off? Or maybe going thru a PS3 type slump?

I had a PS4 and it was great but I just haven’t been compelled by to buy a PS5 this gen.

@Antwan3K: good call. Sony just needs to spend money on R&D. They need to spend none on advertising as Digital foundry will advertise this console for free.

You'd have to be a F*****G IDIOT to spend £700 on a games console.

When you buy a PC for £700 to a grand, it's justified, because you have the freedom to use it however you please, not just for gaming. But to spend £700 on a CLOSED platform, JUST for gaming, is beyond dumb.

@Antwan3K: good call. Sony just needs to spend money on R&D. They need to spend none on advertising as Digital foundry will advertise this console for free.

basically..

it's the same concept for when the Xbox One X released.. the One X wasn't meant to sell tons of units, it was a PR vehicle to combat the "720p vs 1080p" narrative that plagued the base Xbox One..

and in that regard, it worked..

currently, PC gaming is more appealing than ever so a PS5 Pro (coupled with a GTA6 release) is a good way for PlayStation to keep eyeballs on the console market as we head into the next-generation..

This completely runs counter to what console gaming is about.

Yup, reminds me of why I never bought a PSP go

Paying that much to step into a closed ecosystem is not a good idea when these services get shut on a whim.

But people love spending money on Apple products so I’m sure this’ll do just as well.

Yeah, I have spoken to more people and... the reception here is so poor. Many have now more or less finalized their choice to just stick to PC gaming next gen (maybe getting a Nintendo Switch successor).

For sure, just started building my new PC. Most of the money is focused on a high quality AM5 motherboard. I'm starting out with an R5 7600 (7600X doesn't show meaningful upgrade for gaming). But because it's an AM5, I should have more freedom to upgrade down the line when needed.

The Series S was a cost effective stop gap for a while, while I considered what kind of PC to get. I'll decide a bit later on the graphics card.

But yeah, I went PC during the 8th gen, and am going back to it now. It's a bit sad to retire my current PC, had some interesting things set up, like Intel RST (60GB SSD with a 2 TB HDD for gaming). I'm a bit of a nerd for that kind of stuff. The I7-3770 has served me well for a long time, and outside of the latest games, it's not exactly awful. That's the thing, it's not like it used to be in the 2000s when your CPU went from good to crap in three or four years. You have a lot of choice now and a good CPU can REALLY last.

I wonder when the first price increase will be.

No interest w/o a disc drive included.

Series X has a disc drive, Ps5 Pro doesn't. You have to add 80$ for an external disc drive. Sorry but this is bad no matter how you spin it!!

Sure but, that's if you care about a disc drive.

It's honestly more shocking that they could throw in a $2 stand.

The best place to play GTA6 in 2026 will be PC. Congrats, Xbox achieved nothing as usual.

Expected 600-700 with a disc drive the fact you pay extra yet again is robbery.

Ridiculous price for what it is, with no disc drive. Screw that.

Pretty much sums up the gen for PS & Xbox.

@SolidGame_basic: If you have disc based games, it's really $780.

It's not even that much more powerful. Most of the gains in framerates are due to them finally using super sampling. I do appreciate the focus on framerates here. The last two generations of consoles have been a disappointment in that regard, with everything being focused on faux 4k while running at 30fps. An $800 console? Really?

At this price you can get a 7900XT or a 4070ti
