Speculation by fanboys said devs had a lower allocation, good to hear I suppose. That's what the Wii U OS is using, about 1GB of RAM. I'm sure the 720 will use about the same.

Looking forward to seeing more games.

So thats 1GB dedicated to the Sony OS / Sony Kinect rip-off LOLRR360DD

According to the article, the Wii U uses 1GB of RAM and it only has 2GB of RAM. The 720 will also use a set amount of RAM for their OS, probably in the same area (between 512mb to 2GB). I don't understand the "LOL" because even the PS360 generation consoles has dedicated RAM set aside for the console OS.

Also, it seems to me you haven't heard of Eyetoy if you think Sony has a Kinect Rip-off. It's a dead give away you are just troll posting I suppose. *yawn*

If that's true that the OS uses 1Gb RAM...well, cows just lost the "but Windows uses so much of your hardware" excuse.

cfisher2833

Are you an idiot? How is this ownage on the cows? 1GB of RAM is miniscule for an OS. Especially one that is supposed to last for 5-8 years on average. They'll make numerous updates to the OS over time. Using less than 1GB would be a huge mistake on their part. They need to think about the future an any OS additions they might add over the years.

That's a gig more than I thought they would have.

I was figuring about 2 gigs for the OS and whatnot, 6 gigs shared for the games. That's plenty.

For 1080p you only really need 2 gigs for GPU and I can't think of a single PC game that takes more than 3 gigs of ram when it's running on a 64 bit machine. Even the big ones like Shogun 2, ArmA 3, Planetside 2.

Either way, the RAM won't be what limits the PS4 any time soon.

With such amount of ram they have more space to menoover then in with PS3, i mean if Crysis 3 runs on 256MB of this gen consoles OS which is not memoery demending. should be easy, also Android can do a lot in background with 1GB of ram

Very true but I'm not judging RAM based on nowadays features, I'm basing it on future unseen additions to the OS. Who knows what the next big thing will be in entertainment that Sony will want to incorporate into PS4's OS :P. It's always best to have way more RAM than you will ever need IMO and I think Sony thinks the same way.

Not really. It's still 8GB of GDDR5. My laptop has 8GB of RAM with maybe 1GB allocated to Windows 7 and background programs but I don't list the specs as 7GB of RAM. No reason to stop saying 8GB GDDR5 based on that.

7 is a lucky number though. 8 was Hitler's favorite number.

 Awwww yea.

They however never state how much memory will be allocated for streaming/recording. So if background tasks and OS is allocating 1gb I would think along with the other features 2-3gb might be typical usage with all features +OS. So 5-6 gb will be for the game cache and video.

Unneeded IMO with 7gigs the RAM will never be bottle-necked but the CPU, GPU can still be and will be. IMO they just put 8 gigs because M$ said they were, but MS is using windows 8 in their OP system which is a RAM hog. 7 gigs is overkill IMO for the CPU and GPU they're using I'll be surprised if 1 game net Gen uses all that RAM even once.

Yeah it makes me wonder how they fit that in 1GB, but you forgetting about hard hard drive which can be also used in this process, for example 1 minute is recorded, it dumps it to hard drive and clear RAM for next freames, this way it won't use hard drive all the time when games needs it, i bet there other ways to solve this out and i bet they won't waste RAM for it;] Streaming won't take much as once encoded frames are send they are useless on console and can be thrown away.

And funny enough, after all this talk of 8GB...

mitu123

 It's still 8GB of GDDR5 unless you believe that your PC also has only 7GB of RAM because Windows 7 and other programs eat about 1GB.

The trouble is, when recording video you are saturating the I/O on the hard drive.

Thats why im saying about very specific time period, recording part on RAM and dump it every time some time, how much 1 min of more commpressed 1080p will take? i bet not more then 100MB. Either way they i bet they solved this problem somehow, as they adrvitise recording and now they saying there server only 1GB of RAM, i bet they don't do that wholy in RAM or else other system features don't take as much, maybe they might also record only gameplay without menus when all game resources are already loaded to RAM.

Funny thing people were saying the games shown were only using 1.5GB. Yet they could have used 3GB and they didn't.

So that just goes to show you. All that extra RAM is wasted on weak HW.

Truth_Hurts_U

They were using it because were developed on the garbage PC hardware, with 680GTX that has only 1.5GB VRAM

Now that they have finilized kits and 8GB as final spec to use they can go all out

PC lol

The PS4 is using PC architecture. Loosey, are you going senile? clyde46

No it is not, PC does not have anything similar to unified VRAM for all purposes

Imagine that PS4 with the unified VRAM, both saves bandwith/cycles when PC needs to move textures around different ram pools AND at the same time uses extremly fast VRAM for main ram, which PC does not have either

The GTX680 is available with 2GB and 4GB. Try again Loosey.

Then you have the 4gb GTX 670, 6gb Titan and 6gb 7970's. Also PS4 gpu can never use more then 4gb for the gpu since its not strong enough make use of the amount of memory to the fullest potential.

Mooooo !! Ill be a cow this gen it seems !! PS4 seems solid to me and i cant wait to learn more about the system.. When developers praising it its a very good sign. periodAzatiS

PC people think that anyone cares if PC has more raw power, when they dont have a single game like Deep Down or Agnis to use it

Plus missing all exlusive JRPGs that are my top priority, while PS4 already got Witcher 3 and the only proper Diablo 3 version (offline, direct hero control)

PC gaming is for laughs

Funny fact: xbox 360 Witcher 2 version has like 1000x more next gen lighting than PC version

Speculation by fanboys said devs had a lower allocation, good to hear I suppose. That's what the Wii U OS is using, about 1GB of RAM. I'm sure the 720 will use about the same.

Looking forward to seeing more games.

Snugenz

As far as I know, the X720 will be using more RAM for it's OS because of Kinect.

Serious question, did you just pull that out of your ass?.

Were are people getting all these details from about a console with no official acknowledgment as of yet.

People seem to forget the 360 launched with an OS footprint on 32MB compared to the PS3s 120MB

Yet Witcher 2 looks best on PC.

Bebi_vegeta

If you like knights with armor that glows like a lamp at night and have no next gen proper lighting and shadows, sure

If you like next gen realistic lighting, with actual light source, proper shadows and no glow/bloom, it is only found on xbox 360 version

What are you talking about ? X360 has lower setting plenty of other stuff.

There's nothing next gen about X360, it doesn't even have a actual sun in the Witcher 2.

xbox 360 version has next gen lighting, PC has a bloom instead of that

Check it out, it may destroy the little dream world PC gamers live in, but is a fact

Digital Foundry has all the pics to prove it

Sounds good.

The only thing I really dislike about the PS3 is the pain in the neck slow opertating system.

Dude, are you seriously attacking my comment?

Where have you been? From all the rumors about the next gen systems dedicated RAM for the OS, PS4 was rumored to use 512mb (when it had 4GB GDDR5) now it's doubled, and the X720 was rumored from quite a few sources that the OS would take 3GB of RAM, majority because of Kinect.

Before you start attacking me, you should be clear of what my post assumed. I said "As far as I know". I didn't state it as fact like you assumed I did.

Awesome, simply awesome, but when you're by gamers, for gamers, it's to be expected. Thank you Sony.

It wasn't an attack, more of an outburst of astonishment at people "knowing" so much about something that we have little to no solid information on at this point.

If that's true that the OS uses 1Gb RAM...well, cows just lost the "but Windows uses so much of your hardware" excuse.
