[QUOTE="edidili"][QUOTE="Ringx55"]So what's wrong about a writer wanting to focus upon just WRITING for a vdeogame?princeofshapeir
That's what I'm wondering too. Everyone wants her head but then again do you have to be a gamer to write the story of a game? A concept artist or a music composer can do his job just fine without having to play games.
Then please shut the hell up and stop posting your desire to have buttons that skip gameplay and cut straight to the plot. You're writing a story for a video game, and a video game is meant to be played, not read or watched. She was asked a question about a feature she would like to see games have... she is a writer, and as a writer likes the STORY aspects of games, but not necessarily the gameplay. She didn't say no game ever again should have gameplay, she said if there was one thing she'd like to see it'd be the OPTION to skip sections of gameplay - which as a writer is a completely acceptable thing to say. A musician might say they'd like more focus on music, or for video game music to be taken more seriously and respected in the same way movie scores are that doesn't mean they want a game to be just music and nothing else.Even as a gamer that's a legit concern. How many games have those sh*t tutrials you want to skip? Or boring missions, or entire sequences of the game that are boring and sh*t and you just want to skip it to find out what happens next? I hated Mass Effect - loved the conversations, but hated the gameplay - I would like to be able to sit down and just talk the whole game. Other games I have played through JUST to watch cutscenes I liked, or played through because I enjoyed the story. Perhaps a better way for her to rephrase her answer is that gameplay in general should have more narrative to it instead of being boring as bat sh*t, stuff where actual plot is developed instead of cutscene - mindless killing - cutscene.
There is more to a game than just gameplay - graphics, artstyle, writing, music all contribute to the experience. The best games have had a balance of these things. Same thing goes for movies that might be "cool" to watch but ae devoid of story (Tranformers). Look at Saving Private Ryan which has great visuals, music, acting and story - now look at Avatar, amazing visuals... does it have music? terrible plot and mediocre acting (probably due to the plot).
Writing for me is one of the most important aspects of a video game.
