The best FPS ever made would be a Half-Life game mixed with F.E.A.R's combat. That combo would be so sexy.FrozenLiquid

I reckon that would go so badly. It would be like INTENSE COMBAT then

puzzle time! Half Life's combat and puzzling felt good toghther, if you made Half Life as intense as Fear it would feel really disjointed

Nah I'm not talking about Half-Life's puzzle sections, which, as an adventure gamer I don't find particularly attractive shoe-horned in a shooter. I'm talking about their presentation and variety, which is fantastic. F.E.A.R doesn't nail presentation and variety. Strange, after Monolith made NOLF 1 & 2.

Not just the puzzling, everything else really.

FEAR is a super flashy and fast paced shooter right? I think that goes against Half Life 2 gameplay. The subtle things like running speed and animations can change the feel of the game completly. Half Life's combat isn't super intense or anything because the game isn't all about that. The core has to be flexible enough for it's enviromental storytelling and other stuff. FEAR is mostly a game about it's combat, Half Life isn't.

That's just my say anyway

Okay, so not just the puzzling anymore :P. I'm sticking by my guns. Yes, FEAR is intense, but it also tried to ape Half-Life's 'inbetween' moments, and failed miserably. We understand that FEAR isn't a Serious Sam or Bulletstorm, but we can also understand it's just as intense as those in gunplay, in its own way. FEAR, then, is still akin to the 'epic' FPS campaigns such as Halo, Half-Life, Bioshock etc, but it's own gimmick is the intense combat. The thing is Monolith doesn't seem to have been able to keep with is a good single player narrative, which Valve did so well. It might've been better to say the best FPS is a Valve game mixed with FEAR's combat. Left 4 Dead, for example, featured intense gun fights, but could also keep its narrative going well with good level design and passive storytelling.

It was indeed an awesome game opie, talking entirely through gameplay.

BUT... there wasn't really a climax unfortunately. It was great but just stayed at the same level of action throughout the whole game which was kinda unfortunate. Nothing really happened in the end.

That's just a cutscene. In the game I was still going through the same drab corridors/rooms I was going through the entire game. I know... it was a parking lot or something but it still all looked the same. The enemies at the end weren't any more challenging than anything I had fought previously. There wasn't any sense of urgency or anything; I had no idea I was even reaching the end of the game. When it finished I was just like, "What, that's it?"

Have you played Metro 2033 or Resistance 3? They are sort of along those lines, Resistance moreso.

Lots of bam, bam manshootan action that's damn good and 'epic' nonsense, but having a very Half Life sense of pacing between action sequences, world building and scene setting. Surprisingly enough Resistance manages to keep a straight face the entire time, and do it well, much like Half Life; and low and behold it actually has a solid focus on the central protagonist's character. To a lesser degree there's Bulletstorm (did a good work with character as well), which I'd argue did a decent job at hitting middle ground concentrating on action, and Crysis 2 which well - was a huge blunder; but yeah neither of these games have FEAR's hyper-kinetic action.

That being said I'm getting a bit tired of window-dressing shooters that feel like one of those conga-line amusement park rides, or 'It's a Small World' nightmares. Still, Bioshock Infinite looks pretty super but I'll sit my hide in the Dishonoured camp of 'what's hot and interesting' for now.

FEAR is one of the most over hyped and overrated games I've played. Its a straight corridor shooter with some good gun play and a horror theme. Everything else is entirely subpar and generic. It hasn't aged well at all either. Half-Life as a series is the best.

I enjoy a good round of Tribes too, though the learning curve can be pretty steep. Especially getting down the projectile physics inheritance...really hard to place those spinfusor discs where you want them at times, doubly so if you're going for a mid-air kill.

I came into this thread expecting Half-Life fan-wankery in the OP.

I did not see it, though it did show up later. Ironically, some of these people were bashing FEAR as being "generic" and "doing little well." While praising Half-Life.

FEAR was ok. Here's a list of games that spring to mind that I thought were better for their time:

  • crysis
  • half-life
  • half-life 2
  • quake 3 arena
  • halo
  • battlefield 2
  • enemy territory
  • Far Cry
  • team fortress 2
  • unreal tournament 2004

Half Life and Fear do the opposite things better. Fear has best gunplay, meh everything else. Half Life has somewhat crap gunplay but awesome everything. They should combine and make an awesome love child.

The only thing Half-Life 2 does well (and I'm assuming that's what we're talking about because that's the one everyone creams their jeans over) is pacing, atmosphere (and games like Bioshock spank it in that regard), and to an extent, characterization. The gunplay sucks, the puzzles are boring, the enemies are repetitive and not all that smart, and the vehicle sections are some of the worst in any game, on any platform. Oh, and the story is generic, too. And not really all that interesting.

Yeah more or less agree. I'm not quite so harsh but it is overrated. Half Life 1 was much better imo. What happened to the AI that used to brutally grenade and flank me?

Half LIfe 2, but only because i don't consider Metroid Prime a FPS.

VanDammFan

That is something Ive never understood..its in FP and you shoot...so its actually a FPS.I played it and thought it was a FPS..

God of War is in 3rd person and you use melee attacks, but it isn't a fighting game, is it? If Metroid Prime was in 3rd person it would be called an action adventure. The perspective is what confuses people.

A fighting game is normallly 1 on 1 battle till somone wins. GOW would be closer to 3rd person action adventure...The thing about Metroid is you have guns, playing it in 1st person..to me its no different than Halo..guns,aliens,missions,ect..BUT I know its never been looked at as a FPS..just my thoughts on it..

To me "shooter" implies an action focus. Halo is all about killing enemies, whereas Metroid Prime is about making your way through the environment and solving puzzles, with some combat to keep things moving (just like Zelda).

I came into this thread expecting Half-Life fan-wankery in the OP.

I did not see it, though it did show up later. Ironically, some of these people were bashing FEAR as being "generic" and "doing little well." While praising Half-Life.

Oh, System Wars. Don't ever change.
