Umm..no. A price should be considered. You can't compare 10$ game to a 60$ juggernaut. THere are things universal to games, regardless of a price, but there also elements that depend on price and budget. For example, anyone complaining a 10$ game is short is a moron, while the same complain about 5-6hours 60$ game is perfectly valid.A problem in a game is a problem regardless of the price. Once you've paid for the game, the price isn't a consideration any more.

Sure, the length of the game. But bad gameplay, poor sound effects, or oeverall low quality are things indie games usually get a pass on. The only games that shouldn't be slammed for those things are free games.
Edit: I just wanted to add that "indie" doesn't mean cheaper. Plenty of Indie games go for full price, but they still get rated on loose standards.
As oppose to the ridiculous amount of free pass we give high profile retail games?[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"][QUOTE="OB-47"]
I totally agree with this
"They poured their heart and soul into this"
Yeah, that and several flaws. But let's give them a pass on that because they indie

Who does, reviewers who work for the sites that are funded almost entirely by the ad revenue from the publishers of those games or the gamers themselves?
BothBut bad gameplay, poor sound effects, or oeverall low quality are things indie games usually get a pass on. There's no reason to slam a game for not having voice acting if it makes it work.Pug-Nasty
Indie and bigbudgeted just have different standards. And it goes both ways, the AAA titles get a free pass on lack of originality, bad writtin and character development and lack of enough content.

People are also much more forgiving when they know the game was made by a small team with a small budget. They give the indie games passes on a lot of stuff they will hit a big game for, simply because they have an excuse.

Slashless? More like Tasteless, amirite?

Who's that guy?

Indie games with bad gameplay? Such as?
Indie games make a name for themselves because they do something good. If an indie game has ****ty gameplay it will simply be forgotten and never spoken of again. Ever heard of Garshasp? It's an indie game with some of the worst gameplay I've ever managed to look at. The only reason I remember it is because I can't delete it from my Steam games.
DAMN YOU GS AND YOUR AMATEUR HTML CODERS.
That guy is the one you just mentioned, his name is Tasteless, he's one of the most popular Starcraft 2 progaming casters in the scene.

That's awesome and all, but..
STILL BETTER TASTE THAN SLASHLESS.

indie games don't always have bad gameplay. Infact they often have a really neat gameplay hook, but they are sometimes executed pretty terribly or badly. But because it's a small team and well....indie people ignore alot of the mistakes and constantly compare it to AAA games which have achieved their admittedly unambitious mechanics superbly.

And in the same breath praise franchises like Elder Scrolls, Grand Theft Auto, Uncharted, Mass Effect, what have you as excellent franchises(disclaimer, I have no beef with any of those franchises). Yes this board(and internet forums in general) has its share of outspoken haters, but let's not pretend that 60 dollar games don't get a free pass. From both the gamers and critics.[QUOTE="OB-47"][QUOTE="jg4xchamp"] As oppose to the ridiculous amount of free pass we give high profile retail games?jg4xchamp

Frankly while sure the vast majority of indie titles are usually unique ideas that aren't executed at a high level for one reason or another. The best stuff is usually games that showed they could do more with less.Yes I actually kinda agree with you (especially on Uncharted) but they are some points I have to counter the GTA and Elder scrolls criticsms. But it's really late right now and I need some sleep so it'll have to wait till next time sorry. But don't worry I get the general gist of what you are saying
You know why it's this way Slash? Because game developers in general seek to appeal to two kinds of people, illustrated by two people I know in real life. The first is the "I'll buy anthing that's got a brand on it" person. This person buys the terribly designed cash-ins for such TV series as Ben 10 and Wipeout. The other is the "I'm a mature (fill in the blank) -year-old and I wanna play games that have violence and sex in them". This person who was a huge fan of Pokemon abandoned the series because he didn't think it was mature enough for him and now only plays games with an M rating or sports games.
The people on this website, writers and lurkers included, are in general unlike the rest of the population. We'll spend entire hours debating with people on here and call that time well spent. We'll play games for hours to master that hidden move and 100% the game. We'll read books to expand the lore of a game. I know some won't but the general population will. Things that we see as completely stupid will be awesome to the more casual gamers. To an extent, you can't blame developers for making money, but we ought to be speaking out more about the quality of the games and really going out to support indie titles and titles that give a unique experience to show that games such as the ones you mentioned and others like Demon's Souls are what we want.
We should also be doing more to communicate with our more casual friends to inform them about these indie games and show them the full spectrum of gaming goodness. If we don't like the gaming society, we should seek to change it rather than to just sit behind our computers and complain about it.
