Why does the "PC gaming is too expensive" argument still rage on??

So you would spend an extra $1000 to play five games better?

And a $600 pc is mediocre? How would you even know?

NoodleFighter

Nope, spend the extra money to max everything on the market at extremely high resolutions and never have to tinker with settings to find the perfect blend of performance to graphics. Also please, a $600 is not going to give you the visuals and performance that make Pc gaming such a superior option to consoles. I don't want to just beat consoles when I make a PC, I want to blow them away. No PC enthusiat here is going to try and tell me I can get a PC from scratch with everything including monitor, keyboard, mouse and copy of windows for $600. Get out of here with that shiit.

suck it :P

That PC being far better than mine both processor-wise, and graphic-wise. I also don't even have a wireless adapter in my computer.

Mine plays Crysis at med-high settings at around 40fps though, so that should be a bit better. However, I don't really care to play Crysis, so the performance in that one game doesn't phase me as I max out every other game I care to play.

Of course he'll need about $150 more to get a great monitor, keyboard, and mouse though.

Yes and you can just upgrades some part... like a GPU, you don't need a new case or HDD...

That's still going to cost money and eventually you can't just upgrade one thing without another. With my old computer I just wanted to upgrade the GPU but then you have to worry about the size of it, the power usage, the CPU.

Again reference my post above, all of that is contingent on your knowledge and initial investment. If you build a PC that is about to be an outdated socket, then you just wasted on a CPU/MB/RAM because the new socket will require a new MB/Ram type/CPU. So the better investment upfront along with careful timing of WHEN you buy that CPU/RAM/Mobo is crucial. A good CPU/RAM/Mobo should last 3 years now with how powerful CPUS are. Plain and simple. Ram speed isn't that much a factor and anything over 8gig can SLOW performance in many respects. The GPU is the main thing you will need to upgrade and that may not be for awhile. A good PSU can last A LONG TIME. I mean if you get a good Power PC&C PSU, you will not have to upgrade that for the better part of a decade.

It really is price. Think of it like this. Consoles have some really really good exclusives. See games like Uncharted and Halo. A good PC costs about $600, then you need a wireless keyboard and monitor. Then you need an OS for another $100, and everything just doesn't work perfectly. PC gamers can say its just as easy to be a PC gamer as it is to be a console gamer, they can say it does so much more, that its easier, that its prettier, that the community is more mature, but it is not as streamlined. That is a fact. My laptop isn't capable of Crysis 2 or BF3, but it's been having driver issues lately which I can't explain and Steam was giving me errors as well. I have been a PS3 gamer for over 4 years and I have had only one instance where the console would not play a game wanted it too when it thought it was a leap year.

OT, it isn't cheap to buy that streamlined console and the PC. Its a down payment. Even if it saves you money in the end its hard to wait for it to come back. Right now, I don't have $600 I can just drop on my dream rig, and I certainly don't need one right now.

I've bought a good PSU to start off with, 1000W to never worry about changes.

I've bought a big case to never worry about size.

It's called smart shoping...

When upgrading a CPU, you may need to upgrade your motherboard... again parts by parts, not a complet new PC.

Now, you're right... You're not going to get all of the best components crammed into a box and shipped to you for $600 bucks. But you can absolutely get a machine that solidly outperforms consoles on any game out (and can max out many) for that price, and enjoy all of the other benefits of PC gaming while the perfectionist in you selects, saves for, and eventually puchases sensible upgrades to give you that last bit of perofrmance muscle. And while you wait, your games will STILL be looking better than on any system you've ever owned before.

santoron

That's the most sensible approach which is what I was detailing earlier.

It's much better to work from the ground up than from the top down.

When you work from the ground up you get nearly every benefit for the minimum price, and as time goes on if you discover enhancements you want to make then you can do so with that cheap PC.

When you work from the top down you've essentially purchased a bunch of stuff that may prove to be incredibly unnecessary, and therefore wasted a big chunk of cash.

As I've stated in the past my PC cost $600, and this was three years ago btw. It WILL play every game out there very well, but there are a few choice games that won't max like Crysis. However, a "few choice games" doesn't even begin to compare to the other 500+ games from this generation that my PC plays perfectly.

I went into Crysis understanding that my computer might not be able to play it at max, and when it did not max it it didn't bother me in the slightest as when I finished the game that was it. I didn't care much to play through a second time.

Same goes for this 24" monitor I bought. It works perfectly for nearly every game, but I see the potential for a much better experience when using three monitors to play flight sims or racing sims. However, I'm not the biggest fan of those games as it is, so I remain with a single monitor.

Wow, hard to believe some people are still on here bloviating about "because your parents won't buy one for you" and the like, "jobless grade-schoolers" and the like. This has been THOROUGHLY put to rest earlier in the thread, after no more than 2 or 3 pages. Now the thread has been reduced to a tech discussion. sigh.....

I'm going to assume your laptop is store-bought both meaning it came with pre-loaded software, and driver support and updates tends to require input from whichever brand made it

A custom-built PC has a lot less hassles from my experience.

Firstly you know 100% of software that's on your computer

and

Secondly when you get drivers, and updates you are getting them direct from the source. You don't have to go through any third parties. My brother had an issue like that with his Asus laptop. Apparently even though ati had graphics drivers available his laptop was not compatible with them because of Asus themselves. Therefore his laptop couldn't actually play a game properly.

The experience is much, much different when you have a custom-built computer. I think I've only encountered a single error once in the lifetime of this PC I have (which I bought in 2008), and that was fixed in 5 minutes.

The two laptops I have that I bought from a store? I hate using them tbh :P

[QUOTE="ShoTTyMcNaDeS"]Guys I am just curious why when someone throws out the "Why don't you game on PC" threads one of the very first arguments by non PC gamers is the $$$ of doing so? The reality is that every one of us that partakes in these very forums has a PC. Now while the vast majority of us dont have that "Gaming rig" with the perfect combinations of CPU's, GPU's, RAM and whatnot, odds are that your PC's can run every game that your 360 or PS3 can at equal or better visual quality. Heck, I have a DELL XPS Laptop that I play Crysis 2, BF3, Skyrim and KoA Reckoning on with no issues! There are always the arguments that you have to constantly upgrade graphics cards and whatnot. This is not true unless you happen to be one of those people who HAS to have the best at all times. Im betting there are "hardcore" PC gamers in these forums that haven't bought a new video card in over 2 or 3 years. How about the cost of games? From my experience PC games are on average $10 cheaper than their console counter parts and services like STEAM and Amazon have fantastic deals all of the time for downloads. Again, this is not about the comfort of the chair you game in or a preference of controller Vs. M/KB, this is about anti PC gamers using the almighty $$$ as a reason not to game on PC!! I don't think this argument holds any water!!

1. If your system can't run it on Recommended specs your probably better off going with the console version. 2. No one plays Skyrim on any system with no issues. 3. If your Graphics card is still holding up after 2-3 years you bought top of the line which probably cost almost as much as a console. 4. If you buy your games at gamestop be prepared to be ripped off, Amazon has very good deals and some people just prefer physical media so Steam is a no go. If you want a half decent Gaming PC be prepared to spend around 1000$ and upgrade in about 2 years where as a console pack will run you 300$ with no upgrades.

You make no sense. For wanting proper team communication I am the problem?

PC360Wii

No, but for belittling him at every chance you get. Telling him to man up and stop sulking because the mean big strong men are picking on him makes you part of the problem.

Then what solution do you have? if you think "Man Up" is belitteling I dunno... maybe its neccesary for you aswell.

Here's the thing about the "man up" line.. I'm not the most humble person in the world, and I can back up whatever I say and win. I'm good enough to not feel "man up" applies to me, but... if I get annoyed or am not having fun it will become a dollar value... and I will decide it's not worth my time. If the people you play with simply are not fun to play with then you leave, and the same people calling you out ane making a game miserable will be stuck with each other and I've never seen a community survive after that. I get what you're saying and I'm not calling you out, it's just that for me it will always go back to Team Fortress 2. A game that for as much as I love it, I lost that love and walked away when players became hyper aggressive and exploited it too much. Some variation of that exists in every game and it is usually the players, not the system. To tie this back to the topic If the players don't make the experience better then the dollar value doesn't reach a point to justify the higher price point of a PC.

PC gaming is too expensive for most console kids here. Hopefully they get promoted to manager of McDonalds instead of flipping burgers for the rest of their life.

When people say consoles are cheaper, what they really mean is that it's cheaper to let their parents buy them consoles than it is for them to buy their own gaming PC. In reality, gaming is not cheap. And, ironically, in the long run my Xbox 360 (hardware, software, subscription fees, etc.) proved to be more expensive than my PC, despite me being primarily a PC gamer.

On a side note, it's amusing to see console gamers complain about the price of PC hardware, and in another thread to see the very same console gamers brag about gaming on their 55"+ HDTVs.

Ginosaji

lol. Since I have them all, I will do the basic arithemetic at the time of purchase for the slow PC gamers on these forums.

$2060 (my gaming laptop with no games)

- $760 (360, 4 games, accessories and Live fee for a year)

- $520 (PS3 and 2 games)

- $300 (Wii and 10 vc games)

- $200 (PSP and 2 games)

- $200 (5 years of Xbox Live)

= PC gamers are ignorant

So for the same price of a good gaming laptop with no games, you could get all three consoles, a handheld, 17 games AND 6 years of Xbox Live fees.

Yeah, PC gaming is SO WORTH IT!!!!!! Teh Gxggrraaapppphhixxzzzz`1111!!!!!11

LOL so everyone who wants to PC game has to buy an overpriced gaming laptop??? If that is the case you left off the price of a 60" LED 3D television that all console games have to go out to buy to enjoy their games. You do realize that desktops are much cheaper right? They are even cheaper still when you don't buy pre-built and make your own.

Strawman arguments FTW!!!!!

[QUOTE="lowe0"] Ask him; I was here first. Besides, this is a debate forum - I'm not here to make friends.lowe0

But playing PC games doesn't require you to make friends either, so would you really be joining a community of gamers like that?

The community rents the servers. You want to game on PC, you're stuck with them.

Ah, so now PC gaming is synonymous with multiplayer.

Again, PC gamers, explain to me why I'd want to join a community with this guy.

I don't even want to be on the same planet. First and foremost because of calling people stupid, and proceeding to fill one's post with grammatical errors. Sheesh.

Wouldn't you say that's an extremely narrow view of people who enjoy gaming on consoles? You realize that comments like this make you look just as ignorant as the people you're insulting, right?

Actually, many people are making me stay on Earth. As well as things such as gravity, lack of money to build a space rocket, etc.

Why would I let somebody with such a varied vocabulary, like yourself, rule my life? I think I will continue to live life as I currently am, and then comment on your awful grammar mistakes.

Fun times.

because you take everything you see on this board seriously and can't have fun is why you'd get kicked out of most communities anyway

The fact that anybody would sleep with you is a miracle in and of itself. Whoever degraded themselves that much must have had you fantasizing about me.

400euros console ( average in 2007 ) + 59.99/69.99 for each game .

750euros PC ( in 2007 ) + games 29.99 to 49.99 ( not including the fact of superior quality , free DLC content , free mods , better online ,and way better deals overall)

Now do your math how many games a gamer can own in 5 years and here is your cheaper console gaming.

PS: I own this 2007 750 euros rig and i just finished Batman:AC in 1200p. And it costed me 29.99

You assume one buys games at full price and does not wait for a price drop.

Yeah and i didnt even talk about that in 2007 PS3 had 599 , extra pads , kinects , moves , pay to play online on Xlive , and that PC has great games on 4$$ price tag over STEAM when the same title is like 19.99 on consoles let alone the thousands 100% free to play PC games all over. I let that aside yeah to make as much even as i could
