How does it help? This is like if a man is on trial for an alleged lynching, and to protest his friends go out and beat up a black person.Timstuff
Because in American courts you have to prove someone is liable not what another group is doing. Also, an unaffiliated group of hackers all of a sudden going after Sony doesn't have anything to do with Geohotz.

But it is not going to make Sony stop. It will only strengthen their resolve to punish Hotz for his actions so that their enemies will take them seriously.

They way Sony has been stepping on some consumers is unacceptable, that's probably why anonymous is pissed.Robbazking
So Anonymous is going to screw over even more consumers just because Sony stepped on a few consumers? Love their logic.

What is Sony going to do on top of what they are already doing? Sue Hotz for breathing? The reality is these hacker attacks don't affect Hotz.

Anon seem to think that by punishing Sony's customers, those customers will no longer like Sony. It only makes people get more angry about hackers. Why do they think Sony has such overwhelming support from the gaming community in this lawsuit? Sure, the hacking and piracy communities are all on Hotz's side, but the people who actually care about using the PS3 for its intended function are not going to be happy when some trolls try to stop them from playing their PS3 in order to "stick it to $ony."

Anonymous and the other hackers want Sony to drop the lawsuit. If Sony drops the lawsuit, the hackers win, plain and simple, and they are free to walk all over Sony. If Sony sticks to their guns though, Hotz will be either paying off his legal debts for the rest of his life, or he will have to agree to work for Sony until his debts have been paid off (if they are generous to him). Anonymous either wants Hotz to win, which would set the precedent that hacking is legal, or they want Sony to drop the lawsuit, which would mean no-one is in danger of being sued for hacking the system again in the future. Neither outcome is acceptable for Sony, and they are certainly not going to drop the suit now that a hacking group is directly attacking them.

So then you at least admit that it will not have a positive effect on the effort to hack the PS3 then?

No. There will be no affect one way or another. Look, Sony has to prove Geohotz is liable. What's happening today doesn't change that case.

All I see here is, a bunch of playstation nerds are pissed because they can't play their games online and ironically calling the hackers "nerdy" and "keyboard warriors". I can't believe how willing this community to bend over as long as they can play their games online.

After reading the news I was feeling joy, because this is the internet. Here, the firms just can't get away with s**ting their consumers with the help of expensive lawyers and f***load of money.

To people who thinks that ps3 is Sony's product and it's their right to do whatever they want of it, remember that PSN is their service and they are responsible for it's security. You paid for this service when you bought your ps3's and it is Sony's responsibility, not leisure, to guard it from attacks. If the service is disturbed, you should demand your right from Sony, and stop whining about the hackers because you paid them for this service. If a bunch of "keyboard warriors" can disturb Sony's service, it's their blunder.

In my eyes, whoever supports Sony in this situation is nothing but a fanboy.

I don't care if you lose your "right" to hack the PS3, because I'm not losing anything. What I will lose if the hackers win is my ability to use my PS3 without going through tons of draconian copy protection and not having to pay higher prices for the games that you're just going to steal.

I can't believe I have to explain the obvious difference but here I go,

Does Toyota assure you that they will guard your car from the thieves? Is there a service that Toyota provides against car thieves? No.

But in this case Sony promises to provide a service so they are responsible for it's security. Notice that, it's not a product like a car, it's a continuous service. If there is a line in the agreement that states, "in an event of an attack to our online service, Sony is not responsible for the downtime and consumers are required to go on forums and whine about it until it's over" than you are right. It is not your right.

If you hire a guard and still your stuff is stolen. Wouldn't you be angry to the guard? Is it not his responsibilty to protect it? Are you really taking the service the Sony provided (namely PSN) for granted?

Actually, many car manufacturers do provide theft protection now. Still doesn't change that the responsibility goes to the thief, not the fact that the service can't be perfect.

Defending your hardware and software is bad. Ayup that makes perfect sense.

Suing Geohotz is fine. Going for an injunction against his activities is fine. Going into his Paypal account, social media account and trying to pull IP addresses of people he's talked to? You had to know those sorts of shenanigans were going to get a group like Anon offside. Sony went too far naively thinking they could "end" the piracy problem. Now they've got a much bigger one.

I'm not telling you that hackers are completely innocent yet you should be demanding your right to play your games from Sony. No service is perfect but it's still Sony's responsibility to maintain it's security.

Let Sony do whatever they want? What the heck are you talking about? Did Sony kill your sister and not get charged for it or anything? Sony took out Other OS, and that hit them heavily. Why are people complaining about Sony "doing whatever they want" when they're the ones offering free service. People are way over exaggerating what Sony did when taking away Other OS. Almost nobody used it, and they can't take away any features that stop it from being what it is: a game console. They took away backwards compatibility to maket he console cheaper, people complained about it being expensive, so they had to take it out to make it cheaper. I don't understand what you're complaining about.

No-one holds hackers acountable for what they do. So far what I've used my PS3 for has been inhibited by Sony in no way whatsoever. I put games and Blu-Rays in it, and the PS3 plays them. I'll start complaining when Sony tries to take those features away, because those are the features that I bought the PS3 for.

Anon supports the free exchange of information, so why are they against Sony getting peoples' IP adresses?

They wanted to make an example out of Geohotz, they may went overboard, but at least now people will think twice after hacking the PS3. Do you really think if Sony wins this fight, that hackers will be as willing to do the same with the PS4?

Yes lets light the world on fire instead then shall we?

I very much prefer that if all the wrongdoers will burn with the innocents as well.

Because that information is going to be used to persecute those users. Which Anon is not onboard with.

Timstuff

You won't start complaining until it affects you. I got that and as I said, I can't argue with that logic.

Will they? Doesn't this story kind of contradict that thinking? They have one of the biggest problems with hackers in their history ostensibly now.

XVision84

Yes. What I'm getting from a lot of people on these forums, and seemingly from Sony, is a fundamental naivete about how hackers, pirates and illegitimate software works.

It does not go away because you want it to.

It does not go away because you sue it.

It does not go away because you shut it down.

Look at Limewire; sued for 75 trillion dollars. You'd think everyone would be too scared to every consider another P2P network; even dozens of alternatives have sprung up and flourished since the case. It is the many headed hyrda of the digital world.

if this was any other case about any other item similar to Enron or anything else would them going after phone records, email records, bank notes, etc be going to far to prove a point?

I don't own a PS3 but these guys are ****s. Why don't they protest for something that matters, and why do they have to hurt people who did nothing.

There's a distinction there I think, investigators got into the Enron database, and considering that Enron is their target, that's not very unusual. Trying to prove guilt by association by exploring Geohotz social media pages, and IP addresses of people on his websites, is far more circumstantial.

By pulling a little stunt like this you know Sony is winning.
